二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Dust on furniture may be bad news for waistlines (腰围). But it’s far too early to add dusting to a weight-loss plan. Dietary fats and other materials that make up indoor dust can send a signal to human fat cells, telling them to grow. That process, in turn, might slow the body’s rate of burning energy. Such changes could add to any weight problems a person might have.

“We don’t know what that means to long-term health and certain diseases yet,” says Heather Stapleton, one of the study’s authors. But she notes that her team’s findings also raise a question of whether pollutants in dust might play some role in the growing, global problem of obesity (肥胖).

Stapleton and her colleagues collected dust from homes and offices. Studies found that some materials in the dust could turn on a protein (蛋白质) called PPAR-gamma 1. It’s found in many human tissues. Turning this protein on can cause fat cells to grow. Researchers think this protein may be involved in obesity. But a second study now finds evidence that certain fats are mostly to blame. Cooking oils may send out some of these fats into the air, where they eventually find their way into house dust. Or, the authors say, the fats might enter house dust as part of the hair or skin cells shed (脱落) by people or pets.

“While the findings are amazing,” says Mitchell Lazar, another study author, “these findings need to be taken as very limited.” Indeed, he adds several cautions about how the findings should be understood. “For one thing, people eat these fats in foods all of the time. That is likely to be a lot more than would be consumed from indoor dust,” he said.

    【1】What do we know about PPAR-gamma 1? _____

    A. It comes from dust.

    B. It leads to weight gain.

    C. It can help get rid of dust.

    D. It only appears in human bodies.

【2】 What’s the best title for the text?  _____

    A. Can house dust make us fat?

    B. Why is it important to clean?

    C. Anything to do to deal with dust?

    D. What is the best way to lose weight?

  • 22、In 2016, Japanese scientists found a kind of bacteria, which they called Ideonella sakainesis, could “eat” plastic.

The secret for Ideonella sakainesis is enzymes (酶) used by bacteria and other cells to make chemical changes happen. It uses two enzymes to turn plastic into something it can eat. What's left over afterward could be used to make new plastic. One of them, called “PETase”, is the one that breaks down the plastic. Recently, scientists have figured out a way to make the bacteria eat plastic even faster. They did some chemical work with the enzyme PETase. They thought what they did would make it eat plastic even slower. However, they were surprised to find that the change made it eat 20% faster.

This is an important step, but it will still be a while before we will know if Ideonella sakainesis can really make a difference. Everything has to be just right for it to do its work. It can't be too hot or too cold. The scientists say they'll keep exploring to make it work in all kinds of conditions. Besides, it only eats one kind of plastic called PET, which is usually used for making bottles. But scientists think it is possible that there may be other kinds of bacteria that eat other kinds of plastic. They think that even if these bacteria don't already exist, they may come along soon. Bacteria can change their habits quickly, compared to bigger life forms.

Most plastic can already be recycled, and this is really just a new way to recycle it. However, as scientists warn seriously, Ideonella sakainesis' new function does not change the fact that only about 9% of plastics actually get recycled, while the rest get thrown away. They also point out that harmful chemicals are added when plastic is made. If bacteria break down plastic in natural areas, those poisons will be given off, and could affect plants, animals, or humans.

【1】How did the scientists find the fact that the bacteria eat plastic faster?

    A.They made changes to PETase.

B.They added more PETase to plastic.

    C.They mixed plastic's two enzymes.

    D.They removed enzymes from plastic.

【2】What do we know about Ideonella sakainesis from paragraph 3?

A.It breaks down some special kinds of plastic.

B.It eats plastic under demanding conditions.

C.It stops other bacteria possessing PETase.

D.It produces enzymes when eating plastic.

【3】What do the scientists convey about plastic recycling in the last paragraph?

A.They are confident to do it.

    B.It's hard to recycle plastic.

    C.Its situation worries them.

D.It has been well done so far.

【4】What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A.To advocate recycling plastic.

    B.To praise scientists' hard work.

    C.To show severe plastic pollution.

    D.To introduce a new discovery.

  • 23、People love the “comeback kid”, the “down and out guy”, and any variety of defeated people whom we’ve seen fail, then manage to dust off their bootstraps (独自所作的努力) and take on life again. Everyone should get this chance in life, and they should get it over and over and over again. Everyone, that is, except our teenagers, right?

At least that is how parents, teachers, college admission officers, coaches, and others who spend time with adolescents have led all of us to believe. We have all bought the great lie that there is not only zero room for today’s teenagers to fail academically, but any form of failure is a great embarrassment to everyone involved. And I do mean everyone.

Ever notice how quick parents are to share college acceptance letters, scholarships, SAT scores, and pretty much all the perfect resumes (简历) of their high schoolers for everyone to see on social media? Surely it makes moms and dads extremely proud. We all want to take credit for our teenager’s great accomplishments, and while that is all well and good, it also means that when failure happens, we scatter like sheep when a wolf arrives, because failure on their part means failure on our part.

Adolescent brains do not have the bandwidth to process that failure is temporary, and that high school is but a small spot on their life map. Unfortunately, while we may talk that talk, our actions do not bolster it. Anyone who has been through the competitive college application and scholarship process knows this all too well, because there is no room for any form of failure. But this is wrong.

Tell your kids that failure doesn’t define them. Tell them it’s normal, natural, and expected. Tell them failure creates comeback stories, and the opportunity to rise even higher and better than before. And finally, tell them you don’t worry that they will fail; you worry that they won’t.

【1】What is the problem of today’s teenagers?

    A.They cannot make their choices.

    B.They are easily defeated.

    C.They’re not allowed to fail.

    D.They face various lies.

【2】What does the underlined word “bolster” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Affect.

    B.Support.

    C.Remove.

    D.Improve.

【3】What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

    A.Success is very important.

    B.Hard work means success.

    C.Success needs family’s support.

    D.Failure just leads to success.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Parents should allow themselves to fail.

B.Teens are wrong about their college life.

C.Parents are teens’ lifelong supporters .

D.Teens should know failing is OK.

Chinese students have tended to come to the UK at a younger age in recent years, which means they come to Britain not only for higher education, but also for high school or even primary school. Asian investors(投资者) have followed this trend, and started to buy independent schools to serve this demand.

An article carried by the Times of London on October 17 reported that last year Chinese-owned company Achieve Education bought Chase Grammar, a boarding and day school in Cannock, Staffordshire. Chase Grammar includes a program that offers extra support for pupils from China. “This trend is very good and I am not at all surprised,” Barnaby Lenon, chairman of the Independent Schools Council, told the Global Times, adding that Chinese people like the English education system. “We welcome Chinese investors in British private education. Chase Grammar School is small, and the classes are small. It gives the school a family atmosphere, Jackie Medhurst, principal of Chase Grammar School, said in a welcome note on the schools website.

Small class sizes, personal care, good exam result, and entry to world famous universities are features that are most attractive to Chinese students. But many parents are also worried that foreign investors might expand the proportion of international students, and that might undermine the British tradition.

It seems that Chase Grammar does not intend to hide their attempts to attract Chinese families. It has set up a China office in Shanghai to facilitate Chinese parents communication with the school. Tong Zhou, a director of Chase Grammar, told the media that the school does not intent to change the ratio of local students and international students.

Some international branches of British boarding schools are very popular in Asia. In recent years, the Chinese passion for the British boarding school system has led some of the best-known schools such as Harrow and Wellington to set up satellite schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. And the trend continues.

It seems that the rising wealthy class in Asia is not satisfied with international branches in their own countries. They want to send their kids to the original British boarding schools to be surrounded by English people and immersed in the British culture. To support their children studying in the UK, Chinese parents are buying houses in Britain. According to a survey by UK Property Weekly, houses near universities and outstanding primary and secondary schools are the most preferable location for Chinese buyers.

Compared to the independent school system, universities are more open. It is reported that China remains the leading source of international students for London.

【1】Which of the following can we know from Barnaby Lenon’s words?

    A. He was surprised at the present current trend.

    B. English universities are better than those in China.

    C. The English education system is welcomed by the Chinese.

    D. There will be fewer investors in private education.

【2】Which of the following is NOT among the attractions of the British schools?

    A. The small size of classes.

    B. The entry to world-famous universities.

    C. Good exam results.

    D. Good living conditions.

【3】The underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “______”.

    A. weaken   B. strengthen   C. follow     D. overcome

【4】Chinese parents are buying houses in order to ______.

    A. invest more money

    B. support their children’s education

    C. show off their ability

    D. compete with other parents
