21、Last weekend, my husband and I drove a dog to her new home. Typically, when we have a new dog in the backseat, it’s a young dog. But this passenger was a much different story. Magdalen is a 13-year old dog. Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but when he fully recovered several months later, he said he didn’t want her back. He had her since she was young but now had no place for her.
The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St, Louis, the rescue team I work with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. Her mouth was swollen (肿胀的) with all sorts of problems. Two teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.
Luckily, a good friend of mine, a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.
Her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life. I hoped, in her new home!

A.She didn’t understand his behaviour.
B.She believed it was painful for him.
C.She was certain he would regret.
D.She thought he made a wise decision.
22、 Early in the morning, LaPierre boarded Boston’s Blue Line “L” to head to the Chicago to Marathon. The train was full of excited marathoners. He took a seat next to a fellow runner and began chatting. Before long, La Pierre noticed a man who seemed to be homeless moving from passenger to passenger, asking for spare change. That struck LaPierre as “really uncommon,” especially the way he stared down anyone he felt hadn’t given him enough.
At the Cumberland station, several stops before the one for the marathon, most of the passengers suddenly escaped from the car. LaPierre, surprised, rushed out to see what was going on, only to hear frightened people shouting that the man asking for money was, in fact, armed and robbing (抢劫) people.
Just then, the armed man himself exited the train car and went to the next one. LaPierre followed him. “I could not walk away knowing there were children and people just trying to get to a race,” he says. The man was standing in the middle of the car when he turned and saw LaPierre, his head down, bull-rushing him. The two men fought for the gun — and their lives.
“You don’t move!” LaPierre shouted, pressing the armed man against a door. The man tried pushing him, but LaPierre pushed him back against the door, grabbing (夺取) the gun and handing it to a passenger, who quickly walked off the train with it. But LaPierre wasn’t in the clear. The man had partners who now surrounded LaPierre and began to threaten him. Then the police entered the car, and LaPierre let them take over.
This was not the first time LaPierre had jumped to the rescue. In 2015, he helped rescue a one-year-old and his mother from a car accident. Last summer, he volunteered to search for a snake that went missing from a backyard cage in Newton. And a few years back, he helped stop a CVS drugstore robbery. “I just happen to be at the right place at the right moment,” he says.
【1】How did LaPierre find the man asking for money?
A.Strange. B.Pitiful. C.Boring. D.Disappointing.
【2】What did LaPierre do when seeing the armed man?
A.He took out his gun. B.He called the policemen.
C.He tried to control the man. D.He comforted the passengers.
【3】How did LaPierre get rid of (摆脱) the robber’s partners?
A.The passengers helped him a lot. B.The policemen arrived in time.
C.He fought with them violently. D.He pointed the gun at them.
【4】What does the last paragraph show?
A.LaPierre leads a difficult life. B.LaPierre is a qualified policeman.
C.LaPierre likes fighting with bad guys. D.LaPierre is always ready to help others.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We were in our late 20s with a child when my husband, Ralph, finally graduated from college.
“OK, now I deserve a piano,” I blurted out when he sat down for lunch just before the graduation ceremony. A look of surprise crossed his face.
“We could never afford a piano. After so many years of hard work, we got you through school. Now I deserve a piano,” I repeated.
Several months later, Ralph, with help, moved the upright piano we bought for $ 100 into our cottage’s tiny arched dining room. It smelled a little musty, but had great tone.
Ralph started graduate school, leaving no money for private piano lessons. The first thing that came to my mind was Santa Monica City College—maybe it offered piano lessons. Skimming the catalog, I danced around the room when I found a class at the same time the boys were at preschool.
Practicing, however, was not so easy. Four-year old redheaded Denny crawled out of bed in the evening on a regular basis. That was my time to practice. He’d pad out of the bedroom in his sleeper and climb up on the bench with me. Soon he began plinking (发出叮铃声) on the high keys. I tried to ignore him. He listened to the echoes of the keys and plinked some more. Doing all I could do to keep focused on my own practicing, I continued to ignore him.
This practice pattern became an evening routine. After a while, I didn’t even hear him anymore. Ralph studied. Denny plinked on the high keys, and I focused on my piece for the end-of-the-term recital (独奏会).
That evening came. However, Ralph said he was busy preparing for the midterms and couldn’t watch Denny.
Pacing back and forth, I shook my head trying to figure out what to do. Time was running out. I bundled up Denny—with his sleeper on—and drove off to the recital with him.
“We’ll sit in the front row, Denny,” I whispered. “You have to be very quiet and listen when I am playing.” He nodded, said “Uh-huh,” and we sat down.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Denny held my hand, but then my turn came.
