二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Forget calling the front desk. If you’re a guest at an Affinia hotel, the staff will try to find out what you need just by looking at you.

The Affinia Hotel Collection is improving service in its five hotels in New York City and one each in Chicago and Washington D.C. Everyone from housekeeping to management will communicate with guests based on body language.

A body language expert trained employees on what cues(信号)to look for. A guest who makes eye contact while walking down the hall, for example, may be open to conversation. A businessman frequently touching an ear is probably nervous and may be interested in a therapeutic pillow(理疗枕头).

“So many companies, when they talk about service, they program it to how many rings till you answer the phone,” says John Moser, marketing officer for Affinia. That doesn’t sound very reasonable. Let’s give employees some tools they can use to find out what’s the right way to talk with somebody at a particular time.”

Patti Wood, a body language expert who carried out the Affinia training, says she has never seen such training given to all hotel employees. “All of the training is to make sure every single guest is treated as special,” she says.

Staff questions about a guest’s day won’t disappear, Moser says. But, he says, small talk isn’t always enough to get a reading of a guest’s needs. “You can’t always tell from the first sentence whether someone is happy or unhappy," he says. “Measuring some of the things they’re showing with the way they’re talking to you, can help our employees provide a service that’s more personal for them.”

    【1】What are Affinia hotels doing?

    A.Understanding their employees better.

B.Setting up new hotels in different cities.

C.Training employees to understand guests’ needs better.

    D.Improving their employees’ body language.

【2】What should a hotel employee do if a guest looks into his or her eye?

    A.Offer a pillow.

    B.Make small talk.

    C.Avoid speaking to the guest.

D.Be open to the guest’s suggestions.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The company.

    B.The service.

    C.The phone.

    D.The hotel.

【4】What does Patti Wood think of Affinia’s training?

    A.It is completely new

    B.It makes employees feel special

C.It will take the place of staff questions

D.It is following some other companies’ example

  • 22、He was once referred to as the Picasso of poetry. Beloved by Chileans of all classes, he is one of the most widely read and respected poets in history. And this year is the 100th birthday of Pablo Neruda (1904-1973).

Born with the name Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basolto, he was a tall, shy and lonely boy. He loved to read and started to write poetry when he was ten. The American poet Walt Whitman, whose framed picture Neruda later kept on his table, became a major influence on his work.

However, his father did not like the idea of having a poet for a son and tried to discourage him from writing. To cover up the publication of his first poem, he took the pen name Pablo Neruda.

In 1924 Neruda gained fame with his most widely read work “Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’’. Yet his rich experience as a diplomat and exile made him go beyond the theme of love. His work also reflected the political struggle of the left and development of South America. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.

Neruda loved the sea which he saw as creative, destructive and forever moving. He found inspiration in the power and freedom of the waves and the seabirds on the coast. “I need the sea because it teaches me,” he wrote. “I move in the university of the waves.” He loved how the sea forever renewed itself, a renewal echoed in his work.

    D. Neruda loved to write his poems near the sea

  • 23、Dutch officials toasted on Tuesday the opening of what is being called the world’s first 3D-printed concrete bridge, which is meant to be used by cyclists. There was applause as officials wearing hard hats and workmen’s jackets rode over the bridge on their bikes at the opening ceremony in the southeastern town of Gemert.

“The bridge is not very big, but it was rolled out by a printer which makes it unique,” Theo Salet, from the Eindhoven University of Technology, told Dutch broadcaster NOS. Work on printing the bridge, which has some 800 layers, took about three months after starting in June and it is made of pre-stressed concrete, according to the university. “One of the advantages of printing a bridge is that much less concrete is needed than in the conventional technique in which a mould (泥浆) is filled,” it said on its website, adding “a printer deposits the concrete only where it is needed.”

The eight-metre (26-foot) bridge crosses a water-filled channel to connect two roads, and it was tested for safety to bear loads of up to two metric tons in cooperation with the BAM Infra Construction Company. “Although designed for bikes, it could take up to 40 trucks,”the designers said. “We are looking to the future,” said the head of BAM, Marinus Schimmel. “3D printing meant fewer rare resources were needed and there was significantly less waste,” he added.

The Netherlands is among countries, with the United States and China, taking a lead in this cutting-edge technology, using computers and robotics to construct objects and structures from scratch without using much traditional manpower. Last year a Dutch architect unveiled (提示) a unique 3D printer with which he hopes to construct an “endless loop” building. And a Dutch start-up called MX3D has begun printing a stainless-steel bridge, of which a third is already completed. The aim is to finish printing by March and lay the bridge over an Amsterdam canal in the future.

【1】According to the text, what makes the bridge unique?

    A.It adopts 3D printing.

    B.It opens only to cyclists.

C.It is made of new material.

    D.It uses much less concrete.

【2】Which does Marinus Schimmel agree ?

A.In theory, it can support up to 40 bicycles.

B.The kind of bridge is energy-saving.

C.The kind of bridge is safer than traditional ones.

D.The technology has been used widely.

【3】Which statement is true based on the last paragraph?

A.The project of an “endless loop” building has begun.

B.A stainless-steel bridge has been half constructed.

C.China is a country with advanced 3D printing.

D.3D printing technology needs no manpower.

【4】Where can you read this passage?

  • 24、Chokwe Selassie, aged 13, is working hard to help drivers avoid potholes(坑洼). The eighth-grader was inspired to kick off his creation on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. He decided to do something about the pothole problem in his city. His solution: an app that warns drivers when there is a pothole ahead.

Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red. And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you. Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they meet, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.

The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson. It works by using the city’s 311 call system, and uses information already stored in a database. Through the call system, citizens dial 311 to report non-emergency problems, which include potholes. Chokwe and his friends determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test the prototype(原型).

Although the app isn't yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The prototype remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. And then he wants to go even farther until it's nationwide.

1The passage is mainly about .

    A. a Solution to Traffic Jams   B. an App to Detect Potholes

    C. pothole Problems in Big Cities   D. Poor Road Conditions

2What’s the closest meaning of the underlined phrase “kick off” in Paragraph 1?

    A. leave   B. invent

    C. begin   D. change

3How does the app work through the 311 call system?

    A. By settling non-emergency problems.

    B. By broadcasting traffic accidents.

    C. By replying to citizens’ calls.

    D. By using its information about potholes.

4Which can be Chokwe’s future target?

    A. Encouraging more kids to create apps.

    B. Taking part in more learning programs.

    C. Making the app available for sale online.

    D. Making the app include streets nationwide.
