21、In England, people are fond of sport. In other words, lots of English people like the idea of sport and watch sport on TV. But the number who take part in sport is quite small. On the whole, English people prefer to be fat rather than be thin.
The most popular sport in England is football. Football is played on Saturday afternoon in most towns and the supporters of a certain team will travel from one end of the country to the other to see their team play. There are four divisions(级别) of the football league. Not surprisingly the best teams are in the first division. But the best supporters are often in the fourth division. You have to be a good supporter to watch the fourth division football!
Many other sports are also played in England, such as golf, in which you try to knock a ball into a hole; basketball, in which you try to get a ball through a net; tennis, in which you try to hit a ball so that your opponent(对手) can not hit it. As you see, if the ball had not been invented, there would have been no sport.
Actually, that is not quite true. Athletics(田径) isn’t played with a ball, nor horse-racing. Perhaps that is why they are not as popular as football!

22、 As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and French, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars (学者) from a number of organizations-UNESCO and National Geographic among them-have for many years been documenting (记录) dying languages and the cultures they reflect. Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Centre Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not satisfied to simply record these voices before they disappear without record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials, including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes, which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has founded, the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project, Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, for the world available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin’s notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

23、Blind boxes or mystery boxes have taken China's toy scene by storm. The idea is quite simple. The customers know they are getting a toy, but won't know what specific toy they are getting until they open the box. It is a bit like gambling (赌博) only without the risk of leaving empty-handed.
One such company to take an important role in this particular market is Pop Mart. By the end of 2020, the company had more than 100 shops and over 1000 vending (售卖) machines as well as an online store. The popularity of Pop Mart's products has made it 33-year-old founder Wang Ning a billionaire.
The idea for blind boxes was inspired by gashapon (扭蛋) from Japan, which are vending machines that give out a capsule containing a mystery toy. Although the toys inside Pop Mart's blind boxes are relatively cheap, costing less than two dollars to make, they sell for around eight dollars. The majority of its customers are between the ages of 18 - 35, typically young adults with over 7 5 percent being female.
Young adults may not play with dolls in the way that kids might, instead, they choose to display them. Sometimes as a symbolic extension of their personalities or just to show off something cute. Some blind boxes contain more limited-edition toys, which entice more serious collectors to keep buying more boxes in the hope that they can get the one that they want. Some consumers have collected over a thousand dolls. If each cost eight dollars, two thousand dolls would mean that she spent around sixteen thousand dollars on dolls.
Blind boxes have been compared to gambling, which can be addictive. While blind boxes have received criticism, no actions have been taken against them yet.

24、 Sleepiness and boredom lead to yawning (打哈欠), so it has long been believed that the action makes us feel more awake by stretching the muscles surrounding the lungs, or by bringing more oxygen to the blood and the brain. Yet in tests, breathing air with high levels of carbon dioxide or even pure oxygen made no difference to the frequency of yawns.
Another theory, proposed by the French physician Olivier, is that yawning improves the circulation of the fluid (液体) that surrounds the brain. As a result, we can focus better on a task. This might explain why athletes often yawn naturally before they compete.
Recently, though, a new explanation has appeared: Yawning is a way to cool the brain. Experiments led by Gordon Gallup at the University at Albany showed that people yawned far less when their head was cooled by a cold pack compared with holding a heated pack to their forehead The temperature of the brain rises when we are tired, so it is possible that yawning is a way to protect the brain from overheating due to tiredness.
But a strange thing is that when we see another person yawn, we catch it too. In other words, yawning is contagious.
How can we make sense of these different types of yawning? It’s possible that contagious yawning is something different, and might have a social purpose. Steven Palek and his colleagues at the University at Albany say that contagious yawning may be linked to our ability to understand what others want to do. If you are good at reading others’ facial expressions you are more likely to “catch” a yawn. Therefore, lonely people tend to be less affected by yawing, according to research by Atsushi Senju, now at Birkbeck, University of London.
So the simple act of yawning tursout to be surprisingly complex Has this research made you yawn yet?
【1】Based on the theory of Olivier, yawning ________.
