21、Mom had read about geraniums (天竺葵) in a magazine—pretty, easy to grow—and, she became possessed with a vision of a house flooded with flowers. She sprang into action and started to grow them enthusiastically. She could be like that: my mother always had sudden bursts of creativity.
Mom transformed the backyard into a flower factory, crowded with pots and plants and bags of soil. She called for my help, and we arranged the roots of the flowers in elegant containers. It was the ripe height of summer. Mom wore long gardening gloves over her hands. She had bought me gloves too, but I refused to wear them. She burst with annoyance. For half an hour she would not talk to me, but then she softened, so engaged in the completion of her project that she forgot my offence, or perhaps for fear that I might abandon the project altogether.
She needn’t have worried. I wouldn’t leave. It was a rare chance to spend time with my mother without the pressure of speaking to one another. We could crouch (蹲下) side by side, our attention on the plants. Although I was her daughter, we often struggled to communicate with each other as though we were strangers or beginners of a language. I wanted to learn her language, if only to better understand her and to increase the chances of her understanding me. There was so much I longed to tell her, but I also feared that if I started, other matters not meant to be spoken might leap out. Better not to risk the opening. Over the course of our three days, I would dream of seeing a great geranium with its root bared until my hands arrived full of soil to cover it back up.
When all the flowers were ready in their decorated pots, Mom spent a fourth day distributing them through the house, moving a wooden stand here and now there, there and now here, until at last every geranium was moved into the house and she collapsed onto the sofa. Flowers at every turn.

22、The return of the road trip
People are cager to get out of their houses, but not badly enough to get on a plane. The solution? A good old-fashioned road trip. As many states make travel rules less strict, they're encouraging people to move around within their home state to help increase local business. A road trip in one's vehicle allows for a sense of control and you know whose germs(细菌) are in your space.
The prioritization(优先) of cleanliness
Travelers generally expect a clean hotel room when they arrive, and now expectations will be higher than ever. We're about to become concerned with cleanliness to the point that it could become the top priority of hotels, more so than comfortable beds and good service.
Checking list can show whether hosts are practicing strict new clean guidelines, including a24-hour waiting period between bookings.
The new appeal of nature
Travelers will be rightly nervous about crowds and anxious to avoid them. That will result in an explosion of visitors to national parks and other places where crowds are less likely to be met with. This could be the start of the golden age of camping,as people want to get outside while keeping social distance.
_______________
Health is at the forefront of everyone's minds these days, and it is safe to say it'll stay therefore a long time yet. Meanwhile, people are sick of being indoors, so tourism is likely to reflect an increasing desire to promote good health while getting outside. Intrepid Travel's CEO James told The Times, "If 2020 proves to be a year we spend a lot of time indoors, 2021 will be about getting outdoors and getting active, with tours centred around things like cycling and hiking."

24、The number of weather-related disasters has increased by five times over the past 50 years, the latest report by the World Meteorological (气象) Organization (WMO) said on September 1st. However, thanks to improved early warning systems and disaster management, the number of death from these hazards (危险) has been almost three times less.
According to the WMO, from 1970 to 2019, weather, climate and water hazards accounted for 50 percent of all disasters. Among the top 10 hazards that led to the largest loss of human life during this period were droughts, storms, floods and extreme temperatures. However, deaths fell from over 50,000 in the 1970s to less than 20,000 in the 2010s.
“Weather, climate and water extremes are increasing and will become more frequent and severe in many parts of the world as a result of climate change,” says WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
“That means more heatwaves, drought and forest fires such as those we have observed recently in Europe and North America. We have more water vapor in the atmosphere, which is worsening extreme rainfall and deadly flooding. The warming of the oceans has affected the frequency and area of existence of the most intense tropical storms. ”
“Economic losses are increasing as exposure increases. But behind the statistics lies a message of hope. Improved multi-hazard early warning systems have led to a significant reduction in deaths. Quite simply, we are better than ever before at saving lives,” Taalas said.
