二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Parents often assume that time spent with their kids will gradually decrease in adolescence. But a new study suggests that while teens try to avoid spending a lot of time together with their parents, private parent-child meetings may actually increase in their early adolescent years. And that may raise a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊) an social confidence, especially if it is time spent with Dad, the researchers added.

The researchers created a long-term study in which they invited families in 16 school districts in central Pennsylvania to participate. In each family, a teenager, a younger sibling, their mother and their father were interviewed at home and then asked about their activities and self-worth five times over a period of seven years.

The study authors were surprised to discover that when fathers spent more time alone with their teenagers, the kids reported they felt better about themselves. Something about the father’s role in the family seemed to improve self-esteem among the teenagers in the study, said study author Susan McHale, a professor of human development at Pennsylvania State University.

“Time spent with Dad often involves joking, teasing and other playful interactions. Fathers, as compared to mothers, were more involved in leisure activities and had more friend-like interactions with their children, which is crucial for youth social development,” the study showed.

But Marta Flaum, a psychologist in Chappaqua , New York, said, “How these findings reflect the real world is a real question. The sample in the study is so small and so unrepresentative of more families in the country today that I’m not sure how much we can generalizing from it. In my community, in Westchester County, I don’t see parents and teenagers spending much time together at all. Parents are often working so hard and have less time to be together with their kids.”

However, Flaum encourages parents tom make time for their kids no matter how much work they have to do. “Research like this reminds us of how important it is. The time we have with them is so short, she said.

  • 22、Everyone has heard the phrase, “giving up is not an option”. Many disregard it and do not believe in it. But this small yet effective phrase gives a strong message. There will always be something that interrupts or causes inconvenience in the journey to achieve the dreams. But that should not drive one away from the path that they are on. Fitting the context perfectly is the story of Ian William.

Popularly known as the “Social Golfer”, Ian William is an accountant, lecturer, author, and a former golf player. He dreamed of playing golf at childhood. He would often observe players playing from a distance. He worked hard and changed his financial(财政的) difficulties. Then he began practicing various golf matches. Due to his devotion and love for the sport, he picked up the techniques quickly and soon began playing as a professional. He also dreamed of participating in the Senior Golf Tour in the coming year.

However, in 1996, Ian was diagnosed with a tumor (肿瘤) in the left part of his brain, which affected his hearing from the right side and damaged his balance nerve. He experienced two surgeries in 1997 with a smile and a hope to be cured. Although the surgeries were successful, Ian caught meningitis (脑膜炎) while recovering from it. Apart from being hopeful and optimistic, there was no other way Ian could cope with the situation.

Just as things had begun to normalize, in 2006, Ian’s body was affected by a major stroke. This stroke numbed (使麻木) the left side of his body. His life-long dream of participating a golf tournament could not be realized anymore.

Ian took his time to recover and came back even stronger. He wanted to encourage millions with his journey and decided to share his experiences through a book. Ian has now published his 3rd book Still Crazy After All These Years, in 2020.

  • 23、   The first thing we notice about new people are their faces. The next time we see these people, we remember them because we remember their faces. This seems like a simple process. However, scientists found that it is not such a simple process. The section of the brain that is responsible for face recognition seems to work differently for different people. Some people have great difficulty remembering and recognizing faces, while others almost never forget a face.

Normal babies are born with a natural ability to recognize faces. In fact, their face recognition abilities are much better than their parents. Babies are most highly skilled at face recognition at six months. But by nine months, they lose this skill. By nine months, a baby’s face-recognition skills are about the same as an adult’s.

Unfortunately, some people are not born with this ability to recognize faces. The part of the brain that is responsible for face recognition doesn’t work for them. This condition is called face blindness. People with very severe face blindness cannot even recognize their own faces. In fact, people with this condition can sometimes be frightened when they look in the mirror. They don’t recognize their own face, so for a second they are startled when they see this unfamiliar face.

Face blindness is not always severe. Scientists believe up to 10 percent of the population may be affected by face blindness to some degree, yet many people with mild face blindness might not even know they have it. They have no reason to know they are different from anyone else until someone points it out. This is similar to people with color blindness. Colorblind people can’t see the difference between certain colors such as red and green, until someone tells them that green and red are two different colors.

There is no cure for face blindness. So for the time being, people with face blindness need to find simple techniques to compensate for their problem. They can try to recognize people by their hairstyle, their voice, or their glasses. Hopefully, in the future as scientists learn more about this condition, they may find a cure.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.The way to improve one’s face-recognition skills.

B.The simple process of the brain to recognize others’ faces.

C.The fact that some people have face-recognition problems.

D.The importance of face recognition in human communication.

【2】When do children have the best face-recognition skills?

    A.At birth.

    B.Half a year old.

    C.Nine months old.

    D.In adolescence.

【3】What does the underlined word “startled” in the 3rd paragraph probably mean?

    A.Depressed.

    B.Confused.

    C.Embarrassed.

    D.Surprised.

【4】What does the author think of the problem of face blindness?

A.People need to take it seriously.

B.Certain techniques can make up for it.

C.It will be cured in the near future.

D.It has the same effect with color blindness.
