二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Shopping is one of the best ways to relax after a stressful week. Nothing is more satisfying than finding a perfect item -- and when I’ m bored with shopping for clothes I move on to make-up and shoes. I never shop in sales -- the reason the items haven’ t sold at full price is usually because they are badly made or horrible colours.

    --Blanca

I hate shopping and it bores me enormously. I really cannot understand   such   a useless   and expensive habit. I only shop for clothes when I can’ t get out of it and when I do, I make sure I buy good quality and as much as I can afford, to put off having to go again for as long as possible. I have friends who will spend a Whole day going from shop to shop trying on lots of different clothes and not buying anything. That’s really stupid.

    --Pam

I can’ t see the point in spending a lot of money on clothes, when they are so much cheaper abroad. I do most of my shopping when I go on holiday, and get great clothes for half the price. I love finding bargains! I also buy a lot in sales. The clothes may be out of fashion a bit, but they’ re good quality, and if you wait long enough, they come back into fashion!

    --Meghan

I personally still spend half of my wage on clothes. I usually only ever wear something three times before I throw it in the back of my wardrobe (衣橱). I never wear a party dress more than once. If I lost my job and couldn’t afford to buy lots of clothes, I would never be able to go out of the house again.

    --Shelly

【1】What does Pam focus on when shopping for clothes?

    A.Price.

    B.Brand.

    C.Pattern.

    D.Quality.

    【2】Who is a bargain hunter?

    A.Blanca.

    B.Pam.

    C.Meghan

    D.Shelly.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Shelly?

A.She has no taste for clothes.

    B.She is addicted to shopping.

C.She is always leading the fashion.

D.She goes shopping only when necessary.

  • 22、After you finish your fries, eat the ketchup packet. When you add your pasta to boiling water, toss the bag into the pot, too. If these instructions sound confusing to you, it’s only because you haven`t yet heard of Notpla, a London-based startup company that is designing a seaweed-based replacement for single-use plastic packaging.

Notpla`s products are meant to be dissolved after use. Current offerings include packet for condiments(调味料), water and even alcohol; a film wrap for products in your bathroom, like toilet paper; and takeaway boxes that replace plastic-based coating with seaweed lining to make them fully biodegradable.

Notpla design director Karlijn Sibbel says they look to nature as inspiration “for the ideal packaging,” like the skin on a fruit. The approach feels especially relevant as the world is coming to terms with the effects of decades of unlimited plastic production. According to the UN, 331 million tons of plastic waste are produced globally each year, and about 60% has been discarded(丢弃)outdoors. Microplastics pollute the ocean, the air and our bodies.

Notpl’s founders initially looked to seaweed as the solution to the world’s plastic problem because it is abundant, grows quickly, doesn’t compete with land crops, and sequesters(隔离)carbon from the air, Sibbel explained. There are also many different seaweed species, and it can be harvested or farmed. “Seaweed doesn`t use land; it doesn`t use pesticides,” Sibbel said. “It can grow into the ocean, where it actually has a lot of positive benefits so it can create new ecosystems for other organisms to thrive in.”

“Our team hopes seaweed could replace single-use plastic in the supply chain broadly,” Sibbel said. But with the volume of plastics used around the world, she understands the enormity(巨大)of such a task. “I don’t think one material or one solution is going to solve everything, but we think that seaweed really ticks the right boxes.” she said.

【1】What function is expected of the seaweed-based replacement?

    A.To serve as containers.

    B.To replace alcohol.

    C.To accelerate plastic breakdown.

    D.To benefit other organisms.

【2】What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?

A.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

    B.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

C.Provide some advice for the readers.

    D.Add some background information.

【3】Which is NOT the reason for the company`s founders turning to seaweed?

    A.It multiplies rapidly.

    B.It can be planted.

    C.It is pesticide-free.

    D.It can purify carbon.

【4】Which word best describes Karlijn Sibbel`s attitude to the future use of seaweed?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Positive.

    D.Worried.

  • 23、   Bangkok has become the world's top tourist destination, with 15.98 million visitors projected to visit Thailand's capital city this year, according to the third annual Global Destination Cities Index released by MasterCard on Monday. Based on data MasterCard collected from governments, central banks, related public agencies and airlines to far this year, the projection for the entire year says Bangkok is surpassing London, the previous holder of the top place, by a very narrow margin.

Monday's report marked the first time an Asian city has been projected to be the top-ranked tourist destination. London came in second, with 15.96 million visitors expected in 2013, and Paris, third, with 13.92 million visitors. MasterCard looked at 132 cities.

  • 24、   There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a simple question from the cashier“Paper or plastic?”Well which type of bag would you choose?

Although all types of bags have some influences on the environment it has long been thought that paper bags are kinder. They are made from a renewable source break down esily bum without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones.

    How can this be true?

Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times higher. Besides the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags which happens to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling the idea that paper bags are more environment- friendly than plastic ones can be quickly given up. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does paper.

Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones plastic still seems to be considered by governments as the more harmful of the two. In Ireland for example a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag and as a result their use has dropped quickly.

There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However we don’t seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If socloth bags are a better choice but still their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do? How should we answer the question of“Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question“What can I do to help the environment?”

1What’s commonly believed about paper bags?

    A. They are convenient to use and recycle.

    B. Producing paper bags doesn’t cost much.

    C. They are more environmentally friendly.

    D. Paper bags can be used by people for free.

2What can we learn from the studies?

    A. Making plastic bags needs more water.

    B. Plastic bags have a serious influence on forests.

    C. Much less energy is needed when recycling plastic bags.

    D. Making paper bags needs as equal energy as plastic ones.

3How does the Ireland government discourage the use of plastic bags?

    A. Appeal to consumers to uSC paper bags.

    B. Reduce the energy in the production of paper bags.

    C. Raise people’s awareness of environmental protection.

    D. Ask consumcrs for extra money if they usc plastic bags.

4What will be probably talked about in the following paragraph?

    A. The measures the govemment will take.

    B. The disadvantages caused by plastic bags.

    C. The action we can take to protect the environment.

    D. The differences between plastic bags and paper bags.
