  • 21、Is It Safe to Eat Snow?

There’s nothing quite like a fresh blanket of pure, white snow. Great for sledding, snowballs, fort-building — and maybe even dessert? Before you take a big bite of the white stuff, let’s talk about what could be in the flakes (雪片).【1】. When it gets cold, moisture (水分) in the air freezes into tiny, beautiful crystals that drift down from the sky.

【2】. For example, if snow has been removed from a sidewalk or a street, it might contain rock salt with certain chemicals, which help ice melt at low temperature. Unfortunately, those chemicals can also make you sick if you eat them, so you definitely don’t want to eat any snow that’s been shoveled (铲掉).

You should never take small bites on any snow near bird feeders or animal tracks. 【3】, squirrels, birds, neighborhood dogs for example, it may carry something not safe to you. Brown snow is off limits for the same reason you wouldn’t want to taste a mud pie. And if that snow looks yellow, well, let’s just say it’s unlikely to be lemon-flavored.

OK, so what about freshly fallen snow? 【4】. But actually, because snow can take in pollutants on the way down, the first hour or two of a snowfall acts like a brush for the air. Scientists have found that new snow can contain strange stuff including pesticides, ashes and even dirt.

All of these things are found at extremely low levels. That means it’s technically safe to eat. But it’s also good to know that if you just wait a few hours and then have a meal on the snow that piles up midway through a storm, you’ll have the best chance of eating nothing more than pure, frozen, sky water. 【5】!

    A.Snow is mostly water

    B.Let’s take a close look

C.Try not to have any taste of the snow

D.But snow can also contain other substances

E.Because snow can act like a pathway for animals

F.One bite and you’ll be hoping spring never comes

G.That should be the safest, yummiest frozen water to eat

  • 22、Upon entering college, Yang Yi was uncertain about a lot of things. However, the 19-year-old international economics and trade student was certain about one thing: She wanted to participate in animal welfare efforts.

“I'm .always a nature and animal lover," she said. She joined the environmental protection  association at her school. Now being president of a group of 25, she leads its efforts to help  stray(流浪)cats and dogs by raising money to buy them food and collecting old clothes to  make them homes.

However, sometimes the association raises doubts. Some students have questioned whether  helping stray animals breaks the laws of nature. "We tried to resolve the controversy," Yang said. “For wild animals, the best way to protect them is to preserve their environment and their natural  habitat, and to let them live their own way. However, for animals that depend heavily on humans, such as dogs and cats, the proper way to treat them is to respect them and take care of them." Besides, if not accommodated properly, stray animals can bring threats to public health, as  they are the main cause of rabies(狂犬病)in cities.  "Now, many young people in China  have agreed upon the need to strike a balance between humans and nature. The only problem is  how," said Yang. Yang and her fellow volunteers are cautious about what they do to help. For  instance, sometimes people feed stray cats human food such as chocolate. But Yang and her  friends point that such food can be dangerous to stray cats.

Yang also cooperates with Non-Governmental Organizations to spread animal protection  knowledge. One of their recent exhibits was about animals in the entertainment industry. "We  are still figuring out the best way to protect animals, but simple deeds such as saying no to animal  performances can prevent wildlife from being captured and tamed. Step by step, we'll eventually  reach our goal," she said.

1Why did Yang Yi join the environmental protection association?

    A. She majored in a relevant field.

    B. She wanted to protect nature and animals.

    C. She was uncertain about her life.

    D. She intended to know about animal welfare.

2What do the group members do for stray animals?

    A. They shelter them with old clothes.

    B. They feed human food to them.

    C. They train them for entertainment.

    D. They donate money to the association.

    3In paragraph 3,Yang believes that

    A. all animals should live naturally

    B. young people have known how to balance human and nature

    C. stray animals are bound to spread rabies

    D. chocolate is not a proper food for stray cats

4What does Yang Yi think of her work?

    A. Enjoyable.   B. Doubtful.   C. Hopeful.   D. Awful.

  • 24、Losing a baby tooth can be fun for a kid. You can put it under your pillow and look forward to finding some money there in the morning. And then you can watch your new permanent(永恒的)tooth grow in its place.

But if a permanent tooth falls out, that's a problem. There isn't another one under the gum(齿龈)that can replace it. Unfortunately, this happens to some older people. And if permanent teeth fall out or need to be pulled, an older person might need dentures.

Dentures, known as false teeth, are a set of replacement teeth for any teeth that are missing.

There are partial dentures, which take the place of only a few teeth and prevent the others from changing position. If all the teeth are gone, the person would need complete dentures, which replace every tooth in the mouth.

Dentures can cause pains at first but take little time to get used to.They also need special care. They should be brushed daily with a special denture brush and cleanser and soaked(浸泡) in denture solution when not in the mouth.

Dentures are important for the old because, without teeth, it's hard to smile, talk, and eat properly. But it can be a little weird if you see someone take out his or her dentures. It can also be strange to see someone, like a grandparent, without dentures in because he or she won't have any teeth. Try not to make fun of the person because this could cause hurt feelings.

People usually lose their permanent teeth due to periodontal disease (牙周炎), or gum disease, which is caused by bacteria that attack the gums. Diseased gums aren't strong and healthy, so teeth can get loose and fall out. Older people often have many cavities (洞) that have been filled over the years, and these fillings can weaken over time, leading to more tooth problems.

【1】If one of your baby teeth falls out, you_______

A.should have a false tooth fixed in its place

B.will gain a permanent tooth in future.

C.have to put it under your pillow at once

D.can exchange it for some money

    【2】A person wearing dentures_________

A.will experience unpleasant feelings at the beginning

B.will spend a very long time adjusting himself or herself to them

C.should brush them with a special denture brush every few days

D.should use denture solution to soak them in his or her mouth

【3】Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Partial dentures can prevent the remaining teeth from changing position.

B.Old people will find it hard to smile, talk, and eat properly without teeth.

C.A person's teeth will possibly get loose if diseases strike his gums.

D.It is hard for a person to wear dentures if all his teeth have fallen out.

【4】What does the underlined word "weird" mean in the fifth paragraph?

    A.inconvenient

    B.excited

    C.strange

    D.impolite
