二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A recent study found that experiencing or even just anticipating uplifting events in daily life was related to feeling less depressed that same day. The study, conducted by Professor Lisa Starr at University of Rochester, found that a decrease in depression was especially marked when the experience included interpersonal uplifts, such as participating in fun activities with friends or family.

A number of laboratory-based studies suggest that the mood of people with depression is relatively unresponsive to positive stimuli(刺激物). In other words, when people with depression experience a positive event in the laboratory—like receiving a financial reward—their mood is unlikely to improve markedly. The issue here is that laboratory research doesn’t always translate to real-life settings.

The Rochester study is one of a growing number of studies examining how real life events with direct relevance to study participants affect their mood. The authors wanted to know if people with different levels of depression felt better when good things happened to them. The answer is simple—yes. The same is true for the expectation of good things to come.

The study included 157 young adults of whom two-thirds had mild, moderate, or severe depressive symptoms. The remaining third had no symptoms, allowing the authors to examine whether the level of depressive symptoms changes the way people respond to positive experiences. The study subjects completed a two-week online diary, tracking their mood as it related to recent and anticipated positive events in their lives—like time spent with friends, or exercising.

Those who reported higher levels of depressive symptoms at the beginning of the study, showed stronger associations between daily uplifts and lower daily depressive symptoms, particularly when the uplifts were interpersonal in nature.

“The findings have really important implications for treatment and are compatible with a treatment model called Behavioral Activation, which suggests that if you can help depressed people to engage in positive experiences—despite their low motivation to do so—their mood may improve,” says Starr. In other words: If you’re feeling seriously blue, make an effort to do something fun with friends.

【1】What did the new study find?

A.Sociable people are less likely to experience depression.

B.People with depression are good at predicting the future.

C.Every one of us experiences depression from time to time.

D.Positive social activities can reduce people’s depressive mood.

【2】What can we learn about the positive stimuli of the Rochester study?

    A.They produced little effect.

    B.They were laboratory-based.

    C.They were financial rewards.

D.They were related to real-life events.

【3】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.How the study was conducted.

B.What the result of the study is.

    C.What affects participants’ mood.

    D.How long the study took.

【4】Which participants’ mood was most responsive to daily uplifts?

    A.Those with no depressive symptoms.

    B.Those with mild depressive symptoms.

    C.Those with severe depressive symptoms.

    D.Those with moderate depressive symptoms.

【5】What does the underlined word “compatible” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Unrelated.

  • 22、As we know, at present many students in many countries including China are learning English. Some of these students are small children. Others are teenagers. Many are adults. Some learn at school, others by themselves. A few learn English by learning the language over the radio, on TV, or in film. One must work hard to learn another language besides one’s native language.

Why do all these people want to learn English? It is difficult to answer this question. Many boys and girls learn English at school because it is one of their subjects required for study. They study their own language and maths and English: Some people learn it because it is useful for their work. Many people learn English for their work. Many people learn English for their higher studies, because at college or university some of their books are in English. Other people learn English because they want to read newspapers or magazines in English.

Therefore, as a middle school student, you must work harder at English. It is a good habit to read English aloud and practise speaking English every day. It is important to learn some useful expressions by heart. If you have a good knowledge of English, you will get a good future.

    1People learn English_________.

    A. not all in the same way   B. over the radio

    C. on TV   D. at school

2From this passage we know that_________.

    A. we can learn English easily

    B. English is very difficult to learn

    C. English is learned by all the people in the world

    D. English is a useful language, so one must work hard to learn it

3Which of the following is right?

    A. We don’t need to learn any foreign languages.

    B. We can do well in all our work without English.

    C. English is the most important subject in schools.

    D. We should learn English because we need to face the world.

  • 23、Have you ever been on an airplane, minding your own business, and found yourself crying for no apparent reason? Or maybe you encountered no actual tears but noticed that the airline played an “emotional health warning” before certain inflight films. 【1】 Is it one of the airplane myths you need to stop believing, or is there actually something happening to your body that makes you cry?

Actually it has to do with the altitude. When you’re inside a flying airplane, you’re miles off the ground. 【2】 So airplane cabins are pressurized to keep passengers comfortable, but there’s only so much they can do. So the pressure isn’t at the same level you would experience at ground level.

【3】 Just as oxygen thins as mountain climbers ascend(登高), the oxygen levels in the pressurized cabin are lower than you’ll find on the ground. With less oxygen available, your body goes into conservation mode. It takes care of essential functions first like your respiratory system, and ramps down(降低) some of the less crucial functions including emotional regulation.

But it’s not just because of the effects being up so high has on your body. 【4】 From a psychological perspective, the mere act of flying can make you cry. Even if you’re not afraid of planes, it’s a stressful situation. 【5】 You may be worried about losing your luggage or making a connection, so you might be a little nervous, which certainly doesn’t help when your body’s emotional regulation is already on “low”.

A.There is an emotional component, too.

B.Are you really more likely to cry while on a plane?

C.There are several ways to avoid crying while flying.

D.It’s not exactly a place where humans usually find themselves.

E.The primary reason is the lower amount of oxygen in the blood.

F.It’s not because you’re flying away from a beautiful destination.

G.You might have to say goodbye to someone in the place you’re leaving.

The Sieferts are the kind of environmentally conscious family who has solar panels atop their home. They use timers on their kids' showers and have planted drought-tolerant landscaping. But they feel kind of guilt. “I haven’t thought about the pool as much as I probably should,” said Annette Siefert.

As California's drought worsens, swimming pools have become a target for those who think the classic backyard greens waste water. Some water districts have banned new pools from being filled and have limited how much water existing pools can use.

But some of those agencies are walking back the rules as they make a surprising discovery: Pools aren't the water wasters some have made them out to be. Analyses by various water districts, along with scientific studies, conclude that pools and their surrounding landscapes use about the same amount of water as a lawn(草坪) of the same size. Over time, pools might even use less water. With pool covers, experts say water evaporation(蒸发)can be cut by almost half, making pools significantly less wasteful than grass and about as efficient as drought-tolerant landscaping.

Facing complaints over a recent ban on filling pools, the Santa Margarita Water District conducted its own water-use analysis. It found that pools require thousands of gallons of water to fill initially, but they use about 8,000 gallons less water than a traditional landscape after that. By the third year, the analysis found, the savings add up, and a pool's cumulative water use falls below that of a lawn.

Water agencies such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power have come to similar conclusions. Armed with new information, Santa Margarita Water District officials will reconsider their ban next week.

“We want to respect the people's rights to use their property. There are many families we know that have saved for pools,” said Jonathan Volzke, spokesman for the 155,000-customer district. “But at the same time, the reality around us is that we're in the third year of a serious drought, and we don't know if we're in the third year of a three-year drought or the third year of a 10-year drought.”

【1】Annette Siefert feels guilty mainly because of ______.

    A. being a typical water waster

    B. the water-use of their swimming pool

    C. her control over her kids' showers at home

    D. the construction of the drought-tolerant landscaping

【2】According to analyses and scientific studies, a swimming pool ______.

    A. had belter be filled up in the beginning

    B. becomes more efficient against drought

    C. isn't what people think to be wasteful of water

    D. consumes more water than a lawn of the same size

【3】What does Jonathan Volzke try to express in the last paragraph?

    A. He expects the serious drought to come to an end.

    B. He thinks highly of those who have saved for pools.

    C. He appeals for reasonable use of the swimming pools.

    D. He tries to maintain the right to use the swimming pools.

【4】What would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Water Crisis In California

    B. Strict Ban On Filling Pools

    C. The Sieferts—Real Environmentalists?

    D. Pools—A Big Factor During Drought?

  • 26、An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦)perched on the tree near their window.

The father asked his son, “What is this? ” The son replied, “It is a crow.

After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you It’s a crow’. ”

After a little while, the old father again asked his son the 3rd time, “What is this? ”

At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒) was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father unwillingly. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while after, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”

This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.

On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.

When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.
