21、 Words and the way we use them offer a rare window on social and cultural trends. Kory Stamper and Peter Sokolowski know that better than most.
The Merriam-Webster(韦氏词典) lexicographers(词典编纂者) are part of a team that edits the dictionary. In a recent interview, Sokolowski and Stamper talked about their job and what the way we use words says about us collectively.
So to know more about them, observers of the language, maybe we should start with some background.
What is a lexicographer?
Sokolowski: A lexicographer is a person who writes or edits a dictionary. The job of a dictionary editor is to prepare and present research about language. One of our former editors-in- chief said, “Tell the truth about words,” and that sums it up for me.
What do you guys do all day?
Stamper: The two main duties of a lexicographer are reading and defining. We read everything: books, journals, blogs, phone books, take-out menus, and so on. What we’re looking for are words that catch our eye. We record the context of these words and information about the sources. Those records are added to a database, and they are the raw material we use in writing definitions.
When we are writing or revising a dictionary, most of our time is spent defining. We define a word according to how it is used in the recorded context, deciding whether the usage has been covered by our dictionary. Once this is done, you look at the new words and new senses and draft a definition.
Drafting definitions requires some training, some experience and a lot of concentration. It’s very, very quiet on the editorial floor.
How closely do the most looked-up words on your online dictionary seem to be related to the news or trends?
Stamper: When our dictionary went online back in 1996, we could see for the first time which were the most looked-up words in English: Affect, effect and ubiquitous were the top words. It was fascinating to us—dictionary editors spend so much time writing definitions but never could have known if anyone ever read them. We could follow what people were thinking about according to what words they were looking up. Thanks to our online dictionary, we had data.

22、Weeds (野草) compete for soil nutrients, water, space, and sunlight with the crops farmers grow to help feed people. Now a third-generation weeding robot, armed with lasers (激光) and powered by AI, offers a labor-saving (节省劳力的) device — while also avoiding the need for chemical herbicides (除草剂) .
The Autonomous Weeder by Carbon Robotics can clear 100,000 weeds per hour, and clear 15-20 acres in a single day — numbers that require a person working an entire season to match.
Moving along a row of crops, a battery of twelve cameras scans the ground, identifying weeds through machine-learning and killing them with a CO2 laser. The robot's onboard supercomputer ensures high accuracy with its laser so as to avoid accidentally cutting crops.
“This is one of the most innovative and valuable technologies that I've seen as a farmer,” said James Johnson of Carzalia Farm in a statement, who has used Carbon Robotics' technology on his farm. “I expect the robots to go mainstream because of how effectively they address some of farming's most critical issues, including the overuse of chemicals, process efficiency, and labor. The sky's the limit.”
If a farmer wants to avoid using chemical herbicides, which have flooded nearly every corner of our food and water supply chains with a probable carcinogen (致癌物) , they must find enough unskilled workers to pull weeds manually — a difficult task in the already short market of agricultural labor.
Since it can solve both problems, it's no surprise that the 2021 model of the Autonomous Weeder has already sold out, even considering it is priced at hundreds of “thousands of dollars.”
To make the device more accessible, rent options are available from the company, as they have already made the 2022 models available for preorder.
The weeding method of the robot is organic and in line with sustainable farming practices. Cost-effective weed control is the biggest difficulty of organic farming, and agriculturalists looking to make the change finally have an option to help them get their vegetables out to people.
【1】What can be learned about the third-generation weeding robot?
A.It is CO2-driven.
B.It damages crops by accident.
C.It functions with the help of lasers.
D.It is used to pour chemical herbicides.
【2】What is James Johnson's attitude to the weeding robot?
A.Favorable.
B.Curious.
C.Doubtful.
D.Critical.
【3】Why is the 2021 model of the weeding robot so popular?
A.It can work in different fields.
B.It can increase food production.
C.It is priced low and easy to operate.
D.It is labor saving and protects human health.
【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Organic vegetables enjoy a wide market.
B.The new weeding method is accessible to farmers.
C.The weeding robot helps realize organic farming.
D.Cost control is the biggest problem of organic farming.
23、After entering high school, you must wonder how to study well. Here are some good skills for you.
Go to class
If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well. If you miss classes, you will miss what the teacher thinks is important; as a result, you’ll miss what is the most likely to end up on the test. 【1】
Take good notes
Try not to write down everything. 【2】 Write down unfamiliar terms (术语). After class, review your notes as soon as possible. You can fill in details that you missed and review the material while it is still fresh on your mind.
【3】
If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher. He or she may be able to give you more help before or after class. Most teachers have little sympathy (同情) for students who just become worried about failing during the last few weeks of the grading period.
Take part in class discussions
In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions. Asking questions and having eye contact with your teachers and classmates can increase your focus during the class discussion. 【4】 This helps you make your point clear in class.
Form study groups
【5】 Make sure that everyone is familiar with the material because you do not want to spend time re-teaching material to people who do not understand it. Be careful! Sometimes group sessions (上课时间) can become chatting sessions.
A.Talk to your teacher if you need help.
B.Don’t be late for your class.
C.Get students together who want to do well in class.
D.All you need is to put down the main points in your own words.
E.If the material is difficult, you’d better read it before class.
F.You should write down all the new terms.
G.So if you want to study well, go to every class.
24、
Pesticides might just be a bee's worst enemy. They harm their brains, slow down their reproduction, and even kill their buzz. Now it seems they damage their social lives and reduce their ability to care for their young.
While previous studies have shown that commonly used neonicotinoid(新烟碱类)pesticides make bees sick and affect how they search for food and navigate, a new study gives more of an idea of how these chemicals affect the internal workings of a colony(种群). Studying these effects has proved difficult, so the team employed a new technique. They stuck tiny QR codes to the backs of humblebees and tracked their movements using a robotic camera.
The researchers looked at 12 colonies housed in a lab, giving some the same level of imidacloprid—the world's most commonly used pesticide—that they'd be exposed to in the wild while keeping others pesticide-free as controls. They checked on them for a few minutes 12 times a day. The findings are published in the journal Science.
Unfortunately, the researchers found a number of obvious differences between the bees exposed to the pesticide and the controls. The bees given neonicotinoids spent less time interacting with other bees and more time resting. This pause in activity tended to happen more at night, but the researchers aren't sure why.
"Bees actually have a very strong circadian rhythm(生理节奏)," lead author James Crall explained in a statement. "So what we found was that, during the day, there was no statistically observable effect, but at night, we could see that they were crashing. We don't know yet whether the pesticides are destroying circadian gene regulation or if this is just some, maybe physiological feedback…But it suggests that, just from a practical perspective, if we want to understand or study these compounds, looking at effects overnight matters a lot."
【1】What does the new study suggest about pesticides' effect on bees?
A.Pesticides lead to their disease.
B.Pesticides slow down their brain function
C.Pesticides upset their community.
D.Pesticides damage bees' internal parts.
【2】What does the underlined word "controls" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The tools used to observe the bees.
B.The data recorded by the robotic camera
C.The researchers conducting the experiments.
D.The bees kept free from the pesticides.
【3】What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.The circadian rhythm of bees is stronger during the day.
B.It is vital to study the performance of bees at night
C.It is certain that pesticides affect bees only at night.
D.The pesticides do great harm to circadian gene regulation of bees.
【4】What's the purpose of the passage?
A.To inform people of the worrying effects of pesticides.
B.To check the best time to observe experimental results.
C.To call for the toughest ban on the chemicals.
D.To recommend measures to improve the quality of pesticides.
