21、Ten fitness exercises you can do at home
Walking
An effective walking workout at home will help to strengthen your legs, while getting some low impact aerobic exercise as well. If you don’t have any stairs available, just walk around the house a few times —it may not be very exciting, but it will do the job!
Jumping jacks
These are always fun, as they bring back memories of being a kid! Who hasn’t done jumping jacks for fun as a child? Well, surprise —they are also great cardio exercises, and good for warming up, too.
Push-ups
These are probably not the most favorite exercise of many people, but while they can be hard to do, you can find easier ways to do them. You don’t need to pretend you’re “Rocky”, and do them with one hand: just do what works for you. Do them on your knees, instead of keeping your legs straight. Or, do them by standing up against a wall. You will build up arm strength and work out muscles in your chest area.
Leg lifts
These are great for building up strength and muscles in your legs. If you find it hard to do the exercises with your legs straight, try bending them slightly.
Crunches
It’s the best exercise for building up and strengthening belly muscles. When you’re just getting started, don’t worry about getting your head all the way up. So long as you’re going up until you feel the stretching of the muscles, you will see some benefit.
Jogging in place
Jogging is a great exercise for your heart. You can jog in place at home while watching TV or listening to music. The only equipment you will require is a good pair of shoes, to eliminate any stress to your legs.
Squats
These are wonderful exercises for your legs and bottoms. You can even just try these by sitting and standing up again from a regular chair, if you’re finding them to be too difficult. As long as you’re able to do a few repetitions, you will provide some benefit to your body.
Dancing
Dancing is a wonderful exercise, which is great for your heart. Not only that, but it can lift your spirits as well, and give your overall feeling a boost.

22、Everywhere I look outside my home I see people busy on their high-tech devices, while driving, walking, shopping, even sitting in toilets. When connected electronically, they are away from physical reality.
People have been influenced to become technology addicted. One survey reported that “addicted” was the word most commonly used by people to describe their relationship to iPad and similar devices. One study found that people had a harder time resisting the allure of social media than they did for sleep, cigarettes and alcohol.
The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease. Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.
I see people trapped in a pathological(病态的)relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them. I call this technology servitude. I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money.
What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question. Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology. Mae West is famous for proclaiming the wisdom that “too much of a good thing is wonderful.” But it’s time to discover that it does not work for technology.
Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.” To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without today’s overused technology.

24、Jill stared at the wall angrily. Pedro, her lab mate, hesitated before asking, “Jill, what’s up?” “Nothing, thanks!” She turned back to her computer, leaving Pedro surprised.
Pedro, from Argentina, had spent the first 2 years of his PhD in Germany before his adviser moved the lab to the United States. Jill was new in the lab. “People act like robots and don’t care about the feelings of others,” she told him later. “That’s what made me angry.” Jill had been busy writing an application for her first research grant (拨款). She wanted to get some feedback from their adviser. When she got the draft back, she was shocked by what she received-15 pages full of pure criticism (批评).
Pedro wondered how to approach the situation. He turned to Jill, “During my first few months working in his lab, I secretly called him Mr. Ice Age. But now I consider him to be kind-hearted. He is upright (正直的) and he cares about his lab members. It’s true that when he gives negative (负面的) feedback, he’s direct, though. It is a cultural thing. He grew up in Germany, where the culture on criticism is different. They never sugarcoat criticism.”
Pedro went on to explain that though Americans and Germans approached work discussions similarly by using a direct way, things sometimes diverge when it comes to criticism. For himself, the biggest challenge was the lack (缺乏) of personal connection. “When I first met the boss, he just told me about the project and wished me good luck. That was it.”
“I did my PhD in Spain. On the first day, we had a huge party together to celebrate my arrival,” Jill told him. Pedro smiled, “People do it differently everywhere, don’t they?” “Yes, they do,” answered Jill.

A.She made mistakes in her research.
B.She lacked confidence in her research.

A.He hardly shows respect for his students.
B.He is good at correcting others’ mistakes.
C.He is an upright but mean professor.
D.He gives his negative feedback directly.
【3】What does the underlined word “diverge” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Extend.
B.Differ.
C.Improve.
D.Pause.
【4】What might Jill come to realize at last?
A.Communication is influenced by people’s attitude.
B.Cultural differences can lead to misunderstanding.
C.Science develops because of cross-culture exchange.
D.Everyone should try to understand one another better.
25、Most forms of conventional advertising — print, radio and broadcast television — have been losing ground to online ads for years; only billboards, dating back to the 1800s, and TV ads are holding their own. Such out-of-home advertising, as it is known, is expected to________ by 3.4% in 2022, and digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising, which includes the LCD screens found in airports and shopping malls, by 16%. Such ads draw viewers5 attention from phones and cannot be skipped or ________, unlike ads online.
Billboard owners are also ________ the location data that are pouring off people’s smartphones. Information about their owners’ locations and online browsing gets collected and sold to media owners. They then use these data to work out when different groups — “business travellers”, say — walk by their ads. That________ is added to insights into traffic, weather and other external data to produce highly relevant ads. DOOH ________ can deliver ads for coffee when it is cold and iced drinks when it is warm.
Such ________ works particularly well when it is accompanied by “programmatic” advertising methods, a term that describes the use of data to automate and improve ads. In the past year billboard owners such as Clear Channel and jcDecaux have ________ programmatic platforms which allow brands and media buyers to select, purchase and place ads in minutes, rather than days or weeks. It is said that outdoor ads will increasingly be bought like online ones, based on audience and views as well as________.
That is possible because billboard owners claim to be able to ________ how well their ads are working, even though no “click-through” rates are involved. Data firms can tell advertisers how many people walk past individual advertisements at particular times of the day. Advertisers can estimate how many individuals ________ to an ad for a handbag then go on to visit a nearby shop (or website) and buy the product. Such metrics make outdoor ads more________ -driven, automated and measurable, argues Michael Provenzano, co-founder of Vistar Media, an ad-tech firm in New York.
However, the outdoor-ad revolution is not ________ -free. The collection of mobile-phone data raises privacy concerns. And ________ of the online-ad business for being vague, and occasionally dishonest, may also be targeted at the OOH business as it becomes bigger and more complex. The industry is ready to________ such concerns, says Jean-Christophe Conti, chief executive of VIOOH, a media-buying platform. One of the________ of following the online-ad pioneers, he notes, is learning from their mistakes.
