二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Mosquitoes are one of the few unpleasant parts of summer. As the temperature rises, these disease-carrying pests become a common sight, especially around standing water. Thankfully, these tiny annoying creatures don’t follow us into the winter, right? Wrong. According to researchers in Florida, climate change will likely keep mosquitoes active even in the colder months of the year. “In tropical (热带的) areas, mosquitoes are active all year, but that isn’t the case for the rest of the world. Outside of the tropics, winter temperatures cause mosquitoes to go into a kind of hibernation called diapause (滞育). We call these mosquitoes ‘cold bounded’ because their activity is limited by these lower temperatures,” says Brett Scheffers, assistant professor in the wildlife eco logy and conservation department, in a university release.

“However, with climate change, summers are to get longer and winters are to become shorter and warmer. What will that mean for those cold bounded mosquitoes? How will they respond?” To see just how adaptive mosquitoes are already becoming to changing temperatures throughout the year, researchers collected these insects during each season in Gainesville, Florida.

Study authors caught over 28,000 insects from 18 different mosquito species during their experiment. Scientists lured the pests by using a trap that produces carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes seek out this gas, which both humans and animals blow out when they breathe. For these pests, the gas signals that a tasty meal is nearby. The team randomly selected 1,000 of these mosquitoes to test in their lab temperature experiment. They placed each insect in a test tube before putting it in water. From there, researchers continued to change the temperature, from cold to hot. At the same time, the team monitored when each mosquito became inactive—marking their upper or lower temperature thresholds (阈点).

As for what is allowing mosquitoes to make these rapid adjustments to the weather, the answer is still unclear. However, researchers believe evolution could be working at a much faster rate in tinier creatures. Study authors believe their findings will help communities better prepare for insect season as climate change continues to lengthen summer.

【1】What does Brett Scheffers think of those cold bounded mosquitoes’ behaviors?

    A.Less active.

    B.More alarming.

    C.More annoying.

    D.Less consistent.

【2】Why did the researchers conduct the experiment?

A.To find out why summer gets longer.

B.To see how mosquitoes spread in tropical areas.

C.To learn how mosquitoes are adapting to climate change.

D.To learn why climate change is related to species evolution.

【3】Which can best replace the underlined word “lured” in paragraph 3?

    A.Killed.

    B.Attracted.

    C.Changed.

    D.Protected.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Cold bounded mosquitoes are easily trapped

B.Wildlife ecology helps better prepare for insect season

C.Mosquitoes will be a year-long problem due to climate change

D.The cause of mosquitoes’ rapid adjustments to the weather is clear

  • 22、   Vacation in the U. S. usually means slower days, and no school teachers know, however, that vacation means students will likely fall behind, and forget things they learned during the year. Simon Vanderpool, a special education teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, decided to do something about it.

He started a program called Books and Barbers. Children go to the barber, choose a book and read out loud while the barber cuts their hair. The child gets a sticker and can take the book home. And there is an added bonus money. The kids get paid to read.

Vanderpool says barber shops are places where kids can feel comfortable. “Once a student feels comfortable, that's whenever the brain opens up, and that they are able to start focusing on nothing but learning. ” Amir Shalash owns a barber shop. But he is doing more than cutting children's hair. He is listening to them read, and helping them with their reading.

Most of the children getting haircuts at barber shops are boys. Vanderpool's idea was to do more than just help them with reading and money. The teacher wants to help kids who are growing up in a home without a father liike he did. Also, I created the program in order to provide a positive mentor(指导者)for the kids that go into the barber shop, and are able to have someone that they can rely on and they can trust in, and just build a bond between the two of them. ” Shalash says he and his fellow barbers like being mentors.

“The biggest thing is that we try to influence as many kids as we can, and that was my whole intention of it. ”

1Why did Simon Vanderpool start Books and Barbers ?

    A. To help children kill time.

    B. To bring children a fruitful vacation

    C. To reduce teacherspressure from work.

    D. To improve children's communication skills.

2What makes a barber shop suitable for Books and Barbers program?

    A. Its collection of books.

    B. Its quiet atmosphere.

    C. Its relaxing environment.

    D. Its friendly barbers.

3What is Amir Shalash's purpose of taking part in the program?

    A. To offer valuable guidance to children.

    B. To show the importance of bonding.

    C. To tell the necessity of trusting people.

    D. To influence his fellow barbers positively.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A. What It Takes to Be a Good Barber

    B. What to Expect During the Vacation

    C. How Important Reading Is to Children

    D. How a Haircut Is Helping Students Read

  • 23、   I teach online and have been doing so for years .I understand the value of traditional face-to-face course offerings for certain courses and certain subjects. I doubt an online course in chemistry can ever be as effective (有效的) as a face-to-face course held in a lab. Fortunately, I teach writing, and the Internet is an effective place for teaching subjects that call for careful reading and discussion.

It is true that there are things I cannot do in my classes on the Internet. It is also true, however, that there are things I cannot do in my classes held in traditional classrooms. So the question we should ask is: What works better or worse in face-to-face classes rather than in online courses, and vice versa(反之亦然)?

One of the things I value most in my online classes is the necessity for everyone to take part in order to show their presence. In my face-to-face classes, a student can sit quietly and appear to be engaged in(积极参与) the discussion without ever offering a thought or opinion. Online, I consider a student who sits quietly but who does not join in the discussion to be simply not present. Further, students in face-to-face classes who are too shy or who are talked over by quicker and louder voices have the chance to take part in an online discussion.

When I teach online, my students and I can be inside or outside and we can sit wherever and however we want. In Michigan, where a winter storm can make going to campus dangerous or even impossible, the ability to learn in class from the comfort of wherever you live is a big advantage. When the weather is not nice, I often teach while sitting in a local coffee shop. When the weather is nice, I often teach while sitting in my backyard.

I agree that online education is not a “recipe (秘诀)for personal success.” Then again, I’m not sure traditional face-to-face education is such a recipe, either.

1What does the author think of online courses and traditional courses?

A.Chemistry courses can be done online.

    B.Online courses are more popular.

    C.Traditional courses are more helpful.

    D.Both have their advantages.

2How can shy students benefit from online discussion?

A.They can do a better job than louder students.

B.They can sit quietly to listen to others opinions.

C.They can think independently and take an active part.

D.They can appear to be engaged in online discussion.

3Which advantage of online teaching is mentioned in Paragraph 4?

A.It is much safer. B.It is less affected by weather.

C.It is more comfortable. D.It happens anytime.

4What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Why I teach online. B.I’ m online.

C.A recipe for success. D.A new teaching style.

  • 24、   In a new look at the impact of long-time sitting behavior on health a new study links time watching television to an increased risk of death.  One of the most surprising findings is that it isn't just couch potatoes who were affected.  Even for people who exercised regularly the risk of death went up the longer they were in front of the TV.  The problem was the long periods of time spent sitting still.

Australian researchers who tracked 8800 people for an average of six years found that those who said they watched TV for more than four hours a day were 46% more likely to die of any cause and 80% more likely to die of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease than people who reported spending less than two hours a day in front of TV.

Time spent in front of TVs and computers and video games has come under fire in studies in recent years for contributing to a spread of obesity in the US and around the world.  But typically the resulting public-health message urges children and adults to put down the Xbox controller and remote and get on a treadmill(跑步机)or a soccer field.

The Australian study offers a different view.  "It's not the sweaty type of exercise we're losingsays David Dunstan a researcher at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute Melbourne who led the study.  "It's the incidental moving around standing up and using muscles.  That doesn't happen when we are planted on a couch in front of a television.

Indeed participants in the study reported getting between 30 and 45 minutes of exercise a day on average.

The results are supported by a new field of research that shows how long periods of inactivity can affect the body's processing of fats and other substances that contribute to heart risk.  And they suggest that people can help decrease such risk simply by avoiding extended periods of sitting.

Keeping such processes working more effectively doesn't require constant intense exercise but consciously adding more routine movement to your life might help doctors say.  "Just standing is better than sitting" says Gerard Fletcher a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville Fla.  who works standing up at his computer.  "When you stand up you wander around a little bit and use muscles not required when you are sitting or lying down. "

Simple strategies for increasing activity include combining household chores such as folding laundry with TV-watching time or getting up to change a TV channel rather than using a remote control.

The report published Tuesday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation focuses on TV watching partly because it is the main leisure-time activity in many countries researchers said especially in the US.

1One misunderstanding people might have is that___.

A.couch potatoes were affected by long-time sitting.

B.watching TV is related with increased death risk.

C.watching TV very long is a good way to kill time.

D.regular exercise can minimize the side effect of watching TV

2What is new about the discovery of the Australian study___

A.Remote control shouldn't be used when people watch TV.

B.People who watch TV too long should take more physical exercise.

C.Sitting too long in front of TV will lead to high risk of heart attack.

D.Long-time sitting is bad for all people including those who exercise regularly.

3According to the study how can people reduce the risk of death when watching TV___

    A.By increasing simple movement.

    B.By totally avoiding watching TV.

    C.By taking some medicine.

D.By doing sweaty type of exercise.
