22、Elizabeth Bishop is considered one of the best American poets of the 20th century. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1911. Her dad died when she was just a baby and her mom never recovered from the loss; she went to live with her grandparents in Nova Scotia, Canada when she was five. Eventually Bishop attended Vassar College, where she began to write poetry.
At Vassar she discovered Marianne Moore’s poetry and met “Ms.Moore” and began their life-long friendship. She later met poet Robert Lowell. She wrote tons and tons of letters to both of them, which is good for us because we would otherwise know very little of her personal life. Bishop’s poetry is sometimes considered objective and cold because it shows almost nothing about the poet or her life.
Bishop published her first book of poetry in 1946 and wrote until her death in 1979. She would spend years working on a single poem. Her poems are not the result of hasty scribbling (匆忙乱写) on paper while eating breakfast. Over a lifetime of writing, she only published about 275 pages of poetry, and about 40 of those are translations. She would look through drafts of poems again and again and improve them until they were as close to perfect as she could get them.
Reading Elizabeth Bishop is like being transported to the very place, the very moment she’s writing about. She leads us to a microscope so we can see every smallest part of the scene. It seems she’s always asking us to notice more, and more until the poem is so clear in our minds that it’s almost painful—like a light that’s too bright. It might take your eyes a while to get used to it, but once they do, you’ll like what you see.
【1】What do we know about Bishop’s early life?
A.She started to write poems at five.
B.She was always encouraged by her parents.
C.She spent her childhood mainly in Worcester.

A.They have a deep influence on other poets.
B.They offer much information about her life.
C.They help us study Moore and Lowell’s poetry.
D.They prove she had friendships with famous poets.
【3】What can we say about Bishop’s poetic creation?
A.She liked to write in the morning.
B.She could write poems at high speed.
C.She tried her best to achieve perfection.
D.She published hundreds of books of poetry.
【4】Which can be used to describe the style of Bishop’s poems?
A.Exact.
B.Informal.
C.Humorous.
D.Enthusiastic.
23、 Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.
One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one's own.
Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one's free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of sharing the secret of Nature.
Some people, however, take no interest in country things:for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight's (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.
【1】According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.People who like country things prefer to live outside the city.
B.People who work in London prefer to live in the country.
C.Some people who work in London prefer to live inside London.

【2】One can use the same money for buying a little house with a garden in the country to ________.
A.get a small flat with a garden in London
B.have a small flat with a garden in London
C.rent a small flat without a garden in London
D.buy a small flat without a garden in London
【3】When the flowers and vegetables in the garden come up, who has the reward of sharing the secret of Nature?
A.Those who live in the country.
B.Those who have a garden of their own.
C.Those who have spent time working in the garden.
D.Those who have been digging, planting and watering.
【4】What would people who think happiness lies in the town feel if they had to live it outside London?
A.Their life was meaningless.
B.Their life was invaluable.
C.They didn't deserve a happy life.
D.They were not worthy of their happy life.
24、When asked to list typical English gentlemen, for many,Colin Firth immediately comes to mind.
In his recent film,Kingsman:The Secret Service, the 54-year-old actor appears as elegant and violent super spy Harry Hart. One minute he’s calm and polite, and then in the next he’s skillfully violent and aggressive. For example,in one scene he says,“Manners maketh a man”,before severely beating up a group of villains(坏人).Firth brings out the perfect mix of typical British style and humor through this performance.
Firth began appearing on English TV in the early 1990s,but it wasn’t until he played Mr Darcy,a charming upper class character from Jane Austen’s famous novel“Pride and Prejudice”,that Firth’s career really took off.His portrayal(形象)of the perfect fictional gentleman conquered millions of hearts, especially females’.
In many fans and critics’eyes,Firth has British good looks,British charm, and a gift for characters with a British sense of being reserved(矜持).Movie reviewer Jason O’Bryan described Firth as“always befitting the calm and stiff-upper-lip British gentlemen character”.
However Firth doesn’t consider himself the authority on gentlemen.“I don’t necessarily approach every challenge like a perfect English gentleman spy. There are many aspects in my personality that are not consistent with someone like Harry Hart,”he said to Dialogue,an English—language show on CCTV News.
But let’s just take his words as another gentlemanly quality-modesty.After all,who might expect an Oscar-winning actor over 50 years old to learn to fight for his first action movie?
To prepare for Kingsman,Firth trained for three hours every day over six months. He broke a tooth and got bru ised everywhere, but took the damage as a symbol of his accomplishments.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Donald Crouch first encountered Jim in his English class in rural Michigan, he saw an unhappy boy, who’d gone deep into a cocoon (茧) of silence.
Donald might have assumed that Jim was bored or uninterested or even backward. Certainly, he appeared to be all of those things.
But there was something in the young boy that lit up whenever the subject turned to poetry. It was unnoticeable, but Donald could see a shift in the boy ‘s attitude--a quiet but unmistakable enthusiasm that accompanied any discussion of Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Tennyson. A twinkle in his eyes would appear whenever Donald lectured on matters of English verse, something which proved to be most appealing to the otherwise disappointed teacher. Although Jim was interested in all manners of poetry, he seemed particularly excited when Donald would discuss Walt Whitman, that greatest of American poets.
One day Donald kept Jim after school and learned that Jim stuttered ( 口吃). Donald understood that Jim had accepted the written word because the spoken word had escaped him. The next day, Donald told the pupils to write a poem. Jim turned his assignment in, and Donald was surprised by how good it was.
The teacher read the assignment over and over again in disbelief and, truth be told, with a little bit of envy; how could a student from the middle of nowhere come up with something like this? He turned his head once again to the boy and began to have an idea.
Donald had noticed earlier that Jim’s stutter disappeared whenever he quoted his favorite poets out loud .
