21、When I was a kid, my dad was in the Air Force and we moved every few years. It was scaring because that meant getting used to a wholly new community and a wholly new school. It was always a struggle to find where I fit in. Already shy, I didn’t have much self-confidence in my friend-making abilities. I was the girl walking in the halls with her head down. When I spoke, you could hardly hear my soft voice. I was nervous and doubted myself a lot. I was nearly hit.
But what I did have was soccer. Wherever I went, I knew I could fit in with the soccer ball. The soccer team meant a familiar place and immediate friends for me. I could express myself on the field. Playing hard helped to get rid of my nervousness.
There are always things that make you nervous and uncertain. That’s life. Even in my lucky life, I still have those feelings---at the beginning of the new sports season, or making important decisions. I keep a small group of really good friends. Most have been my teammates for years. We have shared a lot together. They have seen the good, the bad and the ugly sides of me, and they still accept me. They have taught me that it’s how you treat others that makes you valuable in life.
Throughout our lives, our self-esteem goes down when we feel like a failure, and it goes up when we feel successful. We all need to explore opportunities where we can be good at something and feel good about ourselves. Physical activity and sport participation is a wonderful way to build up our sense of self-confidence. We get to set goals for ourselves, we feel good about our accomplishments, and we learn that after today’s failure there’s tomorrow’s chance.

22、Tips for bathing in winter
Everyone takes baths. It can not only clean your body but also lift your mood. It feels good to have a nice hot bath during the winter, but it can also cause dry skin. 【1】? Let’s have a look.
Q: Why do you feel itchy after a bath in winter?
A: The outermost layer of human skin is the stratum corneum(角质层). On top of it, there is a layer of sebum(皮脂).【2】, according to Healthline, a US health website.
In winter, the air is colder and drier. Our bodies make less sweat, so we have less sebum. Frequent bathing and use of bath soap can take away the sebum. So, your skin may itch and get dandruff(皮屑), according to China Science Communication.
Q:【3】?
A: Many people shower at least once a day. In summer, you might even take two or three of them depending on the day and your activity level. Your skin might be drier in winter. In this case too many showers can bring on extreme dryness.【4】.
Rajani Katta, a professor at Baylor college of medicine in the us, recommends showering with lukewarm(温热的)water for no more than 10 to 15 minutes during the cold season.
Q: When should you take a bath in winter?
A: Some people tend to take a shower in the morning, while others like to bathe in the evening. Which is a better choice?
A hot water bath in winter can make you so relaxed that you feel like taking a nap as soon as you leave the bathroom. In other words, your morning bath will do nothing to heighten your senses when tackling a brand new day.【5】.
A.It can protect and hydrate our skin
B.How often should you take a bath in winter
C.What else should we prepare for bathing in winter
D.What else do we need to know about bathing in winter
E.However, a shower every day will also make your skin drier
F.Yet, a shower every day may not negatively affect your skin
G.Instead, it is likely to make you lazy, according to the newspaper Orrisa Post
23、According to a new study, human noise is a “major global pollutant” that harms a wider range of animal life than we tend to think. Published in the journal Biology Letters, the study suggests noise pollution not only harms lots of animals, but also threatens the survival of more than 100 different species.
Lots of species rely on sound for communication, for example, including many amphibians, birds, insects and mammals which use sound for vital business like finding mates or warning about predators (捕猎者). If noise pollution drowns out enough of these messages. it can threaten survival and the stability of their populations.
On the other hand, noise pollution can make it harder for some predators to find food Bats and owls rely on sound to hunt, for instance, which may not work if noise pollution drowns out the sounds of their prey like insects and mice. Even if noise pollution is mild, it might still force them to spend more time and energy searching for food, which could be enough to cause a decline.
Noise pollution is a well-known risk for whales and dolphins, but it threatens other sea animals, too. The researchers cite fish larvae, which are easily drawn to the sounds of coral reefs (珊瑚礁). This is how they find suitable habitats, but if their journey features too much noise from ships and other human sources, more fish larvae may get lost or move into wrong reefs, potentially reducing their lifespan.
Similarly, noise pollution influences the way animals migrate (迁徙), which in turn can have chain effects for ecosystems along migration routes. Some migrating birds avoid areas with noise pollution, the researchers note, which may change not only where they travel, but also where they establish long-term homes and raise their young. Many ecosystems and non-migrating species have come to depend on the arrival of migrating birds, and many others may be unprepared for their sudden absence, so this could cause a series of ecological changes.
“Noise must be considered as a global pollutant and we need to develop strategies to protect animals from noise for their livelihoods,” says Kunc, the lead author of the study.
【1】What is the new study mainly about?
A.The sources of noise pollution.
B.The dangers of noise pollution to animals.
C.Why people should lower noise levels.
D.How animals deal with noise pollution.
【2】What can we infer about bats and owls from paragraph 3?
A.They are very sensitive to sound.
B.Their hunting abilities are weakening.
C.They are easily attracted by sounds.
D.Their populations are sharply declining.
【3】How may noise pollution affect migrating animals?
A.They may abandon their young.
B.They may give up their migration.
C.They may change their migration routes.
D.They may develop new eating habits.
【4】Which of the following may Kunc agree with?
A.Measures must be taken to reduce noise pollution.
B.Noise pollution affects the way animals reproduce.
C.Migrating animals will die out due to noise pollution.
D.Nature reserves should be built to stop the loss of habitats.
24、In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food, water and supplies. During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed (羞愧的). “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people,” said Santosh later.
He then began the groundwork (基础工作) for a collection to help cook more dishes. Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning, and the real show was about to occur. The December flood affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family was trapped on the second floor. They lost phone connection and electricity. In spite of this, Santosh went back out into the flood, creating a kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims.
He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break every day as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man’s effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to help him in cooking, packing and transporting food. Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. By the time the fourth day finally came to an end, Santosh and his team had prepared 170,000 food boxes and delivered them to the people in need.
