二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I was sitting at my desk when another graduate student in my lab approached me. “Can you help?” he asked. His experiment wasn’t working and he desperately needed help. I was then a fifth year PhD student, and I took pride in being the senior member of the lab, whom everyone looked up to. But that also meant I was the one everyone turned to for help - which ate away hours, days, and sometimes weeks that I could have spent on my own research.

There were many reasons I had a hard time saying no to such pleas(恳求). I was new to the United States for graduate school. I found it difficult to make new friends and discover activities I enjoyed. So 1 spent a huge chunk of my time in the lab, with my lab-mates serving as my primary source of social connection. I feared that if I brushed them off, I’d lose their favor.

But the extra responsibilities came at a cost. I had to work extra hours to catch up with my own work, and I often made sacrifices to my personal life.

It wasn’t until my wife gave birth to our first child that I realized how thin I had stretched myself - and how misguided my priorities were. While she lay in a hospital bed in the early stages of labor, I sat nearby hunched(伏首前倾的)over my laptop finishing up a work report Hours later, after hearing my daughter’s first cry and watching her tiny fingers grab tightly onto mine, it dawned on me: I should have been fully present during my daughter’s birth. I was clearly spending too much time working if my job had intruded(侵入)into one of life’s most precious moments.

From then on, 1 decided to spend more time with my family by paring down my work tasks and carefully considering each request for help. I still enjoyed collaborating with others, but I prioritized mutually beneficial tasks or those my manager asked me to take on, rather than accepting everything that came my way.

I noticed many benefits: no longer working overtime, more family time, and improved work performance. I was also pleased to discover that “Sorry, I’d love to help but I have a deadline coming up” is an acceptable response to a request for assistance.

It’s hard to say “no” to those you work with. But I’ve learned that sometimes that’s the best course of action to avoid an excessive workload and lead a freer and happier life.

【1】Why did the author find it difficult to refuse the requests of his lab-mates?

A.He was afraid to be left out by them.

B.He wanted to earn their respect.

C.He was the senior member of the lab.

D.He had once received help from them.

【2】What did the author realize after his daughter’s birth?

A.He was guilty for his absence when she was born.

B.His wife had sacrificed a lot for the family.

C.He should have balanced work and life better.

D.He should work harder due to the increased responsibilities.

【3】Which of the following is closes in meaning to the underlined phrase “paring down” in paragraph 5?

    A.Putting aside.

    B.Cutting down.

    C.Getting familiar with.

    D.Keeping track of.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Enjoying family life.

    B.Giving priority to family.

    C.Giving and taking.

    D.Learning to say “no”.

    broccoli

When served cauliflower or broccoli, some kids turn away in annoyance. Don’t blame them—a new study suggests specific enzymes(酶) in saliva(唾液) might make these vegetables taste terrible to some children.

These enzymes, called cysteine lyases, are produced by bacteria in the mouth.

The same enzymes are also locked away in the cells of Brassica vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. When we chew broccoli, these enzymes spill out of their storage containers while those in our mouth start to work.

These enzymes break down a compound(化合物) called S-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (SMCSO) in these vegetables, and this breakdown process transforms the compound into sharp smell molecules(分子). Previous studies of adults suggest the level of cysteine lyase activity in a person’s saliva determines how much the SMCSO breaks down. This, in turn, influences how these vegetables taste to adults.

According to these past studies, when different adults consume broccoli, there can be a huge difference in how many unpleasant smells the food lets off as their saliva-borne enzymes break it to bits. But the authors wondered whether the same difference can be seen in kids, who are usually more sensitive to bitter and sour tastes. They suspected that kids whose saliva produced the most smelly, SMCSO-sourced compounds would show the strongest dislike for broccoli.

And the team’s new study proved their assumption. While both adults’ and kids’ saliva produced smelly compounds when exposed to cauliflower, these smells did not influence whether adults liked the vegetable. On the other hand, kids whose saliva produced high concentrations of these smells reported hating cauliflower the most.

The new study included 98 pairs of parents and children aged 6 to 8. After taking samples of each participant’s saliva, the scientists mixed it into raw cauliflower powder. They measured the SMCSO-sourced smell compounds let off and found each participant’s saliva generated a different quantity of smells.

Interestingly, the degree of sickly smell production was similar between parents’ saliva and their children’s. This indicates that parents and kids likely carry similar bacteria in their mouths, which would cause them to produce similar levels of cysteine lyases.

Our senses of taste and smell are strongest in youth, which may make kids even more sensitive to these differences in flavor. The same preference pattern is not seen in adults, who also produce plenty of bad smells. This suggests that the adults came to tolerate the taste of Brassica vegetables. The findings agree with past studies of how our tastes change over time: we can learn to overcome our distaste for certain food by eating it more.

【1】What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?

    A.The function of mouth bacteria.

B.The cause of an unpleasant flavor.

    C.The feature of Brassica vegetables.

D.The form of enzymes in our mouth.

    【2】What do previous studies indicate?

    A.SMCSO-breakdown depends on various enzymes.

B.Enzymes determine the taste of Brassica vegetables.

C.Individuals release varying amounts of smell molecules.

D.Kids producing the most smells hate broccoli particularly.

【3】What can we conclude from the passage?

A.We might accept some foods through repeated exposure.

B.The level of smells may affect an adult’s taste preference.

C.Parents’ and their kids’ saliva-borne enzymes don’t match.

D.Kids’ saliva could produce higher concentrations of smells.

【4】Why does the author write the passage?

    A.To explain a food preference.

    B.To introduce a research method.

    C.To illustrate a biological process.

D.To show the discovery of an enzyme.

  • 23、The following are reviews of the films that are being shown at the moment.

    1. Happiness (Romance)★★★

Happiness tells the story of two people (Lisa Turbot and Danny Roy) who work for different advertising companies. They talk on the phone all the time and don’t like each other. But then they correspond by e-mail and fall in love. This movie will be very popular with teenagers and people who like romances. It also has beautiful music.

It is only for people who like thrillers.

This is a very funny war movie set in World War Ⅱ. Six soldiers (including Sammy Turblow) have to get to Italy to take secret messages to the American army there. In the movie, they dress up as women and fight with Italian workers. You can guess the ending, but it’s great fun getting there.

    4.________ (Drama)★★★★

This is a very good drama with Jack Ross, who plays a hard-working truck driver. His wife becomes ill and he has to find a doctor who can help her. 四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions : Read the following passage . Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Youth in the 21st Century

It seems that everyone is talking negatively about the "Youth of today", Every TV programme the subject shows threatening young people . It is hard to find anything that shows young people in a positive light .

In this country we think the elderly suffer the greatest discrimination, but read any of the reports written on youth discrimination and anyone can see that young people are probably the largest group in society to be discriminated against. A recent survey undertaken by the Children's Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) shows that 49% of the 7 to 17-year-olds surveyed have experienced unfair treatment because of their age. Around a quarter of them say they are treated unfairly during everyday activities. Shopkeepers routinely follow them around the shop or exclude them, bus drivers won't stop for them and when they are in groups, the police order them to move on.

All of the young people I know are aware that modern society treats them unfairly . I've got two sons, aged 14 and 16, and both of them have been stopped from entering shops with their friends because there is a policy of only allowing two youths' in the shop at one time. Neither of them have a record of unruly behaviour and they hate the implication that all young people are potential thieves . I don't think either of my boys deserve such treatment - and from what they say none of their friends do either.

There are more than 11 million under-18-year-olds in England and evidence shows that the vast majority positively participate within their communities, contributing to the arts, sports and achieving well at school. However, no TV programmes report that! Barbara Heam, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Children's Bureau, rightly says, Equality is for everyone, including for our youngest citizens.
