21、In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people.I see it every day when people hold doors for me,pour cream into my coffee,or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience,I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others often;we try every way possible to avoid, showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway,I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual.People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me,homing(按喇叭)or even shouting at me.At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty four years of driving.I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.
No more angry shouts and no more horns!
When I put on my flashlights,I was saying to other drivers,“I have a problem here.I am weak and doing the best I can.”And everyone understood.Several times,I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way.But those are and far between.More often,it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.

22、A young man wandered through the desert for forty until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the sage that he was looking for.
With considerable patience, the sage listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have time to explain to him the secret of happiness.
He suggested that the young man take a walk around his palace and come back in two hours’ time.
“However, I want to ask you a favor,” he added, banding the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill.”
The young man began to climb up and down the palace staircases, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.
“So,” asked the sage, “did you see the Persian tapestries (挂毯) hanging in my dining room? Did you see the fantastic garden that the Master of Gardeners spent ten years in creating?”
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing.
“So, go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can’t trust a man if you don’t know his house.”
Now more at ease, the young man took the spoon and wandered again through the palace, this time paying attention to all the works of art that hung from the ceilings and walls. He saw the gardens, the mountains all around the palace, and the delicacy of the flowers. Returning to the sage, he reported in detail what he had seen.
“But where are the two drops of oil that I entrusted to you?” asked the Sage.
Looking down at the spoon, the young man realized that he had spilled the oil.

24、 Battling freezing temperatures, total darkness, and other dangerous flying conditions, a plane left the South Pole on Wednesday after rescuing a sick worker from a U.S. research base. After the patient and flight crew rest , the plane will make its way to South America , where the patient will receive medical care .
The daring rescue mission(任务)began last week when two planes flew from Canada to Rothera, a British base on the Antarctic Peninsula. On Tuesday, just one of the planes left Rothera on a 10-hour trip to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, where the sick worker was located.
The station is usually unreachable during Antarctica's long winter, from February to October. Forty-eight people live at the base, including a doctor and a physician's assistant. But when the crew there determined the worker needed medical help that couldn't be provided on site, the emergency rescue mission began.
A small crew, including a pilot, co-pilot, medical worker, and flight engineer, made the 1, 500-mile trip from Rothera in a Twin Otter plane. It is the only type of plane capable of flying in Antarctica's winter cold. It can operate in temperatures as low as-103F. The temperature in the South Pole on Tuesday was -73F . In such conditions, an aircraft's fuel and even its batteries need to be warmed up before it can take off.
The pitch-black sky and the threat of high winds and sudden weather changes make such flights extremely risky and rare. This rescue is only the third time an emergency mission has been made to the research base since 1999. The National Science Foundation, which runs the station, has not said who was rescued, or the medical condition of the person. The names of the crew members who made the daring flight have not been made public either . But according to Peter West, a National Science Foundation spokesman, the mission “went all according to plan”.

26、Summary writing
The life of a journalist can be exciting. To be in constant pursuit of the latest news demands a curiosity that can only be rewarded by getting to "where it is happening" as soon as possible. The goal, of course, is to relate what is happening to the public as clearly as possible.
However, every journalist must be careful to report not only a vivid picture of what is happening, but a true picture. Each journalist reports his or her own version of what has taken place. Still, this version must be an actual account if the reporter is to maintain a reliable reputation.
In order to get to the truth in some news stories, a reporter must rely on the statements of someone who is on the inside of the situation. Often this insider will only talk to a reporter if the reporter promises never to reveal the insider's name. The insider usually threatens never to admit meeting with the reporter if his or her name is revealed.
Because stories of this nature often involve criminal activity, reporting them becomes a dangerous job.
This kind of work involved in obtaining news in this manner serves as an inviting situation for the underworld as well as the legal world. Members of the underworld want to find out who the insider is so that they can keep him or her quiet. Members of the legal world claim that the reporter will obstruct(阻挠)justice if he or she fails to disclose the insider's name.
Devotion has given journalism its reputation for reliability ﹣ a reliability that each journalist is expected to uphold in his or her search for truth. Supplying a truthful account of each day's occurrences is the serious contract made between reporter and the public.
