  • 21、With over 4.1 billion people, or around 55 percent of the world’s population, living in urban areas, cities and towns worldwide are getting increasingly jammed. In addition to spending hours stuck in traffic, residents are also exposed to high air pollution levels caused by   transportation emissions(排放). Now, Saudi Arabia hopes to overturn urban living with “The   Line”—a futuristic city designed around nature, without cars, roads and crowded places!

The totally different city, announced on January 10, 2021, is the brainchild of Saudi Crown Prince(王储)Mohammed bin Salman(MBS).Located in Neom, a 10, 000-square-mile high-tech planned development on the Red Sea coast. The Line will be the base of MBS’s Saudi Vision 2030. The strategic plan aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s oil-dependent economy into other fields, like                    tourism, and create exciting job opportunities for its citizens.

The 105-mile-long city, expected to cost between $100 billion and $200 billion, will be built along a straight line and comprise several self-sustaining communities. To ensure all services are within a short, five-minute walk, each community will feature a three-layer infrastructure(基础设施).

There will be no cars or roads on the top “pedestrian layer”, so residents can freely walk and bike in the surrounding green spaces. The second “service layer”, will include all essential daily services, such as schools, medical clinics, leisure facilities, and grocery stores. The third “spine layer” will house ultra-high-speed transportation and autonomous vehicles transporting residents across communities in less than 20 minutes. The entire city will be powered with renewable clean energy sources such as solar and wind, and possibly even hydrogen.

If all goes according to the plan, construction of this groundbreaking, complex infrastructure project will start before the end of 2021. In addition to providing up to a million residents with a clean and stress-free living environment, the Line is expected to create 380, 000 new jobs, promote economic diversification, and contribute a shocking $48 billion to Saudi Arabia’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP)by 2030. More importantly, MBS believes it will provide governments worldwide a blueprint for how people and planet can co-exist in harmony.

  • 22、Naturally, parents praise their kids. They want to encourage their children every day. But when it comes to building self-esteem (自尊) in children, praise doesn’t always have a positive effect, according to a special edition of the journal Child Development. The issue, edited by Eddie and Thomas, is focused on research into how children develop a sense of self and building your child’s confidence takes different skills than you might think.

Eddie points out that children are born without a sense of self, but it doesn’t take long before some kids have a lot of confidence and may feel superior to peers, while others may carry more self-doubt and see themselves as inferior. Yet no one really understands what causes children to view themselves the way they do. Surprisingly little is known about the origins of children’s self-concept,” Eddie said.

Research has found that when kids have a warm, loving relationship with their parents, they develop higher self-esteem. However, when they are given endless praise that is inequal to their achievements, their self-esteem may drop.

Instead of lavish praise, parents should focus on warmth to build self-esteem, researchers have found—specifically, parents should show interest in their kids’ activities and share joy with them. This makes children feel noticed and valued. According to Eddie’s own research, children may develop lower self-esteem when their parents give them lots of positive and overstated praises. Too much praise can make children worry about disappointing their parents, and may lead to an unhealthy attitude toward failure. Other studies suggest that parents can teach children that failure is beneficial by encouraging kids to ask themselves: “Why didn’t I achieve the result I wanted, and what can I do to change the outcome in the future?”

Additionally, it’s important for parents to encourage the belief that kids can develop basic abilities through devotion and hard work. Kids who are praised for their effort instead of their ability are more likely to develop a growth mindset, which have a positive impact on their confidence.

1What does the special edition of Child Development focus on?

    A. When is the best time to build a child’s self-esteem.

    B. What effect praise has on a child’s self understanding.

    C. How children develop their sense of self-esteem.

    D. How blaming and overpraise hurt a child’s comfidence.

2How does too much praise hurt children’s self-esteem?

    A. They’ll be afraid of failing and disappointing their parents.

    B. They’ll have a false understanding of their ability and fail.

    C. They’ll become too proud to get along with other children.

    D. They’ll focus more on their advantages than their weaknesses.

3What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. Children’s effort will help build their confidence.

    B. Children should he taught the value of hard work.

    C. Praising a child’s ability will make them happier.

    D. Some parents doubt if kids can develop their abilities.

4Which of the following is the passage mainly about?

    A. Praising a child for any reason helps build his self-esteem.

    B. How kids develop their sense of self-esteem differently.

    C. Why some kids have more self-doubt than the others.

    D. Participation and encouragement build a kid’s self-esteem.

  • 23、   Slang(俚语) is very informal language which is often used by young people. It’s hard to keep up to date with it as new words and phrases appear and evolve (发展). Living in a multicultural society has an effect on language, especially on the young, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also have a big impact. A complete list of slang is difficult to make; by the time it was finished, the list would be out of date. However, here are a few examples:

Safe, sorted, sound, cool or wicked all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.

Instead of using different tag questions (附加疑问句) like “… isn’t it?”, “… can’t you?” or “… don’t they?”, people use “innit”.

For example, “He can dance really well, innit!” (= He can dance really well, can’t he?) or “They always say that, innit.” (= They always say that, don’t they?)

Instead of saying “very”, “really” or “completely” use “well”, for example, “I’m well tired” or “You got it well wrong!”

“Whatever” means “I don’t care”, for example, A: “But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished.” B: “Whatever. I’m going.”

“He’s fine” or “he’s fit” both mean “He’s good-looking”. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.

Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in the north of England recently told its pupils to stop using slang words such as “hiya” (hello), “cheers” and “ta” (both mean “thank you”) if they wanted to get a place at university or a good job.

When British people use language like this, it’s no surprise that some say they can’t understand native speakers. But perhaps learners don’t need to worry so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken around the world today is between non-native speakers of the language.

So, how important is it to understand these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English examination, though.

1Why is it hard to make a complete list of slang, according to the article?

A.Because many slang words are outdated.

B.Because it is mostly used by young people.

C.Because modern slang changes very quickly.

D.Because it comes from different cultural backgrounds.

2What can we learn about slang from the text?

    A.It prevents language from evolving.

B.It is also spread through TV and music.

C.It is more popular in the UK than in the US.

D.It has found its way into formal written English.

3What can we conclude from the text?

A.Knowing little slang doesn’t greatly affect how one communicates.

B.Many UK schools are encouraging students to use slang.

C.It is essential for English learners to study some British slang.

D.More English is spoken by native speakers than by non-native speakers.

  • 24、Almost every college and university in the US now offers some forms of Internet-based application.【1】 Some people believe that the best way to get a detailed look at what life is like at any college or university is by visiting the campus.

【2】 Most students begin visiting colleges and universities that they are interested in before their final year of high school. The majority of colleges and universities let interested students visit their campuses at any time of a year. Students can contact the admissions offices of the schools that interest them.【3】 Their job is to provide information, offer advice and show future students different parts of the campus such as housing and classrooms. During the visit, students should also try to plan a meeting with an admissions official. Most schools keep a record of all the exchanges they have with candidates.

It's never too early to visit a school. This could be years before they even start thinking about the application process. Simply witnessing the college experience in real life can be helpful for young people.【4】

However, visiting schools may not be a choice appropriate to everyone, especially international students. So for students who are unable to visit, there is one additional resource: social media.【5】 Schools will permit students to post videos and pictures that show what their daily lives are like at college. These can provide applicants with a view that is almost as good as being there in person.

A.Current students usually lead the tours.

B.At present, school visits are becoming popular in the US.

C.This means anyone can enter the campus whenever they want.

D.Many schools use Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to advertise themselves.

E.That is why some applicants even bring younger brothers and sisters with them on visits.

F.There is more to visiting a college or university than taking a tour or meeting administrators.

G.However, students may miss a lot when they only use Internet information to make their college decisions.
