22、 Yu Chenrui, 29, is a fantastic maker of automata. On social media, Spooner, a famous British automata artist, applauded Yu as “a great practitioner”.
Interested in handcrafts as a boy, Yu first encountered automata at an exhibition in 2015 when he studied at the Communication University of China in Beijing. “It is like meeting a like-minded friend,” Yu says, recalling the moment.
When he graduated in 2016, Yu landed a job at an advertising agency near Shichahai, where he stayed for three years. Because, at that time, he was not sure whether he could make a living out of his hobby.
While working as a designer, Yu kept exploring and advancing his skills in wood carving and mechanics. Every day, when he walked along the Shichahai lake, he watched ducks swimming and diving. He envied, in a way, their freedom to do as they pleased.
Finally, though, despite the job’s good salary, it was not enough to compensate for not following his true passion. In 2018, Yu quitted his job and returned to Chengdu to open his automata workshop.
The studio he rents exceeds 200 square meters, and Yu has spent more than 300,000 yuan refurnishing it. Just after finishing the restoration, Yu didn’t know what to do and worried about cash flow. To keep himself occupied he planted blueberries, raspberries and cherries. He watered, weeded and added fertilizer every day.
Over time, Yu’s reputation grew and his business flourished. With prices ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of yuan, his fantastic pieces of art have attracted collectors worldwide.
Many of Yu’s creations are built with a dash of wisdom, a sprinkle of humor and are inspired by observations of real life. Woodcutter and Worm is originated from his own experience of finding a wormhole while cutting wood.
In an age of technology, automata is undoubtedly a marginal sector. Yu estimates that it has attracted no more than 10 full-time makers and practitioners across the country. “I hope it can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and makes them feel more connected and happier,” He says.

23、A new study by Yale University found that reading books was positively correlated with increased lifespan—— people who read books lived for around two years longer than those who didn’t.
In the study, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, researchers evaluated data on 3,635 Americans aged over 50. Respondents were separated into those who read for 3.5 hours or more a week, those who read for up to 3.5 hours a week, and those who didn’t read at all, controlling for factors such as gender, race and education.
The researchers discovered that those who read for more than 3.5 hours a week were 23% less likely to die within 12 years, while those who read for up to 3.5 hours a week were 17% less likely to die within that period.
Co-author of the study, Becca R. Levy, Professor of Epidemiology at Yale University, told the New York Times, “People who report as little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read.”
The researchers found that people who read books showed stronger cognitive abilities, such as recall and counting backwards.
However, reading magazines or newspapers didn’t have the same effect unless readers spent more than seven hours on the activity each week. This was associated with an 11% reduction in mortality.
It is not clear why there is such a strong association between reading and longevity although previous studies have suggested that people who read books tend to be healthier, richer, and better educated in general, all of which could contribute to a longer life.
A separate survey of 4,164 adults in the UK, including both those who read and those who don’t, found that adults who read for just 20 minutes a week are 20% more likely to feel satisfied with their lives. By contrast, non-readers were 28% more likely to report feelings of depression than those who read regularly for pleasure. One in five readers said that reading helps them to feel less lonely.
“Reading not only helps to introduce or reconnect readers to wider life systems and more broadly shared meanings. It can also remind people of activities or occupations they once pursued, or knowledge and skills they still possess, helping to restore their sense of having a place and purpose in the world,” Josie Billington, one of the researchers explains.

24、Tens of thousands of lives would be saved every year in the United States if common air pollution from burning fossil fuels (矿物燃料) is got rid of, according to a new study. The research stresses the huge health benefits of moving away from coal, oil and gasoline.
Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison estimate (估计) that about 50,000 premature (过早的) deaths would be avoided every year if microscopic air pollutants called particulates were got rid of in the U.S..
Premature death and hospitalization are also extremely expensive for the U.S. economy. The study estimates that getting rid of such air pollution would save about $600 billion each year.
Burning fossil fuels are a main source of fine particulate pollution in the U.S.. The new study is the latest reminder that climate change and public health are closely related, and that cutting greenhouse gas emissions doesn’t just reduce long-term risk from global warming; it can save lives immediately by cutting pollution.
Fine particulates, also known as PM 2.5 by scientists and regulators, are pollutants generated by the burning of fossil fuels, wildfires, and some industrial processes. They are about 1/30th the width of human hair, which means they can go deep inside the lungs.
Worldwide, millions of people are estimated to die prematurely every year because of outdoor air pollution, the World Health Organization estimates. More than 1 million global deaths from fine particulate air pollution could be avoided in just one year if fossil fuel burning were got rid of, according to a separate study published last year.
Air quality in much of the U.S. is better than the global average. But the remaining pollution is still deadly, especially to those living in hotspots next to factories, power plants and highways.
“Even with the Clean Air Act in the United States, we still have more than 100,000 Americans who die prematurely from air pollution each year,” says Patz, who has studied the connections between climate change and human health for many years. “It’s a striking health threat.”
【1】What makes people die young according to the new study?

D.People’s health relies on climate change.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
