  • 22、Temidayo Adedokun, 31, who was born in Nigeria and now is working in America, became pregnant with her first child. She couldn’t hide her joy, and couldn’t wait to shop for baby clothes with traditional African prints that she grew up wearing.

“I was super surprised that I failed to find affordably priced African aesthetic(美学的) products that were designed from an authentic place, ” Temidayo said.

Temidayo decided to take matters into her own hands. At first, she focused on creating clothes just for her baby. But then, she put some of them on a website to see what happened.

The feedback she got gave her just enough confidence. She figured she’d make the baby clothes an after-work side business to her full-time position as a lawyer in Oakland, California, until one day she was told she was given a boot. Once again, she needed to make her own choice. That’s when she decided to make it a full-time job.

“I had to evaluate: Am I going to search for another job I don’t have a great desire for?” she said. “Or am I going to take this as a chance I’m not sure about myself? After all, I’m not familiar with this field. What if something unexpected happens? However, for the symbols of children’s clothing in my heart, I threw myself into it. So I chose the latter. ”Then, in March 2020, Temidayo officially announced her own brand: Ade + Ayo.

Since then, Temidayo has received much praise from other African parents informing her that her clothes help them start having conversations with their kids about what they’re wearing and allow them to show their children the treasures handed down by their ancestors. And, for those who aren’t African, her clothes have been a way for parents to introduce their kids to a new and colorful world. “I feel very blessed to be able to be doing this,” she said.

【1】How did Temidayo feel after trying to buy African aesthetic clothes?

    A.Pleased.

    B.Confident.

    C.Stressful.

    D.Disappointed.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “given a boot” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Dismissed.

    B.Promoted.

    C.Well-known.

    D.Accused.

【3】What did Temidayo originally think of her creating her own brand?

    A.It was informal.

    B.It was profitable.

    C.It was risky.

    D.It was trendy.

【4】How can we evaluate Ade + Ayo?

    A.It’s created African aesthetics.

    B.It’s spread authentic cultures.

    C.It’s targeted overseas Africans.

    D.It’s inspired people’s creativity.

  • 23、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

No one enjoys the moment. You are stuck at the back of a queue and as those in other lines move ahead and get served, the time to decide arrives. 1

This question has now been solved by researchers at Harvard Business School. According to what they have found in a new study, they suggest people think twice before switching queues.

The research was led by Ryan Buell, an expert in service management. He looked into consumer queuing behavior after working with economists on what is known as “last-place aversion,” the discomfort people feel when they know they earn less than others or consider themselves at the bottom of the social pile for some other reason. As a result of this aversion to being the last, when a person finds himself at the end of a queue, he can make decisions that he will later regret.

Buell began by observing people at a multi-checkout grocery store and then set up an online survey. People who took part in the survey were told it would take about five minutes. In reality, it took only one minute, but when participants logged in for the survey, they were forced to wait in a virtual queue displayed on the screen. They started at the back and could wait, switch to a second queue or choose to leave.

2 On average, however, those who switched waited 10 percent longer than if they had stayed put. Those who switched twice ended up waiting 67 percent longer than if they had never moved.

“When we join a queue, we tend to make the most rational choice we can, which means joining the shortest queue. 3 Unfortunately, we can often get it wrong,” said Buell.

4 After that, the aversion fades. The researcher suggests people have a chat with the person in front so that they can pass the time more comfortably until someone else joins behind them. “Remember that the person in front of you was the last until you arrived, so someone will show up if you hang around long enough,” Buell said.

    A. If we see a line moving faster, we might switch without having enough extra information.

    B. About one in five people grew impatient at the back of the queue and switched to the other line in the hope of speeding things up.

    C. Do you hold your nerve and stay put, switch to another line in the hope it moves faster, or give up altogether?

    D. Based on his study, Buell says people should think hard about switching queues when they are the last in a line.

    E. In an unpublished working paper on the research, Buell notes that people tend to feel unhappiest at the back of a queue for the first 10 seconds or so.

    F. Although the number of people behind you has nothing to do with how long you are going to wait, it shapes your behavior.

  • 24、Naming hurricane

New research from the University of Illinois finds that hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths than those with male names. The study examined over 60 years of hurricanes which hit the US. The results showed there were higher death tolls, on average, when the hurricanes were given a female name. This wasn’t because female-named hurricanes were any more severe; rather that people’s behavior changed.

Sharon Shavitt, one of the authors of the report, explained: “In judging the intensity of a storm, people appear to be applying their beliefs about how men and women behave. This makes a female-named hurricane, such as Belle or Candy, seem gentled and less violent.” People unconsciously say to themselves: how could I be killed by a hurricane called Candy? In fact, hurricanes are named arbitrarily, and the names tell you nothing about the severity of the storm.

But, if people in the path of the storm are letting its name affect whether they take shelter, what we call it may matter more than we think. Having searched through the records, the researchers returned to the lab to test their finding experimentally. People were given a series of hypothetical storms with male and female names and asked to make judgments about their intensity and the risk they faced. The results showed that people often regarded male-named hurricanes, like Hurricane Christopher or Hurricane Victor as more intense and riskier than the female-named ones, like Hurricane Alexandra and Hurricane Christ. Shavitt continued, “People imagining a ‘female’ hurricane were not as willing to seek shelter. The fixed ideas that underlie these judgments are subtle and not necessarily hostile toward women — they may involve viewing women as warmer and less aggressive than men.”

The fact is that until the late 1970s, hurricanes were always given female names, as they were thought to represent women’s qualities like unpredictability. This practice — and the sexist reasoning behind it — was rightly abandoned in favour of choosing between male and female. Strangely, though, what we’ve learnt is that we’d be better off naming all hurricanes after men to take advantage of people’s fixed views.

The researchers estimate that changing a severe hurricane’s name from “Eloise” to “Charles” could potentially cut the death toll by one-third. Perhaps the naming of hurricane is one specific situation where we shouldn’t worry about being sexist, if being a little sexist is going to save lives.

【1】Hurricanes with female names are likely to cause more deaths because________.
