  • 21、   The Ig Nobel Prize, a spoof (滑稽模仿)of the actual Nobel Prize, exists to award the 10 strangest research projects of the year that bring you fun and make you think. The following are three of them in 2019.

    Medicine Prize: Pizza

It’s one of the world’s most popular foods. According to the Ig Nobel Medicine Prize winner, eating more pizzas can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease — if your pizza is loaded with fruits and veggies. These provide flavonoids (类黄酮)to fight against certain diseases. So, if you’re a pizza enthusiast, you now have one more reason to love it!

    Economics Prize: Dirty Money

Paper money, the most frequently passed items on the planet, is known to pick up all kinds of bacteria. Which country’s currency is the dirtiest? An international team compared seven countries’ paper money. The Romanian Leu was the only one to carry all three types of bacteria tested. And the US Dollar was also a finalist. Perhaps this will make cashless payments more popular.

    Biology Prize: Cockroach

Cockroaches (蟑螂) are well known for their survival abilities, but few folks know they can sense magnetic fields. More surprisingly, an international team found that dead cockroaches have more magnetic properties (磁'性)than live ones. That’s because magnetic properties decrease when the temperature gets higher. So if you can stand cockroaches, they may be good magnetic sensors (传感器).

【1】What do the three prizes have in common?

A.They are beneficial to our health.

    B.They are entertaining and unusual.

C.They’ve gained the recognition of the Nobel Prize.

D.They are stranger than any other project in previous years.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A.People with heart disease should eat more pizzas.

B.US Dollar is relatively dirtier than Romanian Leu.

C.Dirty paper money leads to cashless payments

D.Dead cockroaches are better magnetic sensors than live ones.

【3】In which column can you find this passage in a newspaper?

    A.Discovery.

    B.Sports.

    C.Health.

    D.Business.

  • 22、   In Asia, the car is as much a status symbol as it is a means of transport. A car’s design is not the only consideration when a vehicle has to suit the needs of everyone in the family .

This is the case for one particular group of drivers: The sandwich generation, who are stuck between caring for their children and caring for their parents. For them, the ‘family car’ is often shared with everyone from the newly licensed teens to adults with their own kids, or grandparents struggling with physical mobility.

With differing demands of so many people from boomers to Gen Z, your car has to appeal to all — and keep everyone safe in the event of a car accident.

Over 20% of serious driver accidents involving teens were caused by driving too fast for the road conditions. But it isn’t just risky driving behavior that causes teens to be the source of serious road accidents. In fact, according to research conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, most speed-related teen crashes are due to inexperience and a lack of driving skills rather than intentionally risky driving behavior.

It can be challenging for newbie drivers to appropriately judge the proper speed at which to take turns, especially on less-than-perfect roads or driving conditions. Helping them along is Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring, which makes up for any over-eagerness, ensuring you can take the car through corners in a smooth and safe manner.

For seniors with slower reaction, or having difficulty stretching out their neck to check blind spots, being able to quickly avoid danger can be critical. Subaru’s Blind Spot Detection system will alert you if there’s a vehicle in the neighboring lane. What’s more, Subaru’s EyeSight Lane Departure Warning warns the driver if they start to stray by accident from their traffic lane and endanger other vehicles in the neighbouring lane, while the EyeSight Lane Sway Warning system will remind you should you begin to move back and forth in your lane.

It can be difficult to find a car that appeals to multiple generations. But there are some things you should never compromise regardless of your age or driving experience. And at the top of that list is safety.

【1】According to the text, what is the reason for most speed-related teen crashes?

A.Their risky driving behavior on purpose

B.Their inability to check blind spots.

C.A lack of experience and driving skills

D.The busy roads or ideal driving conditions

【2】What will help new drivers to take turns at proper speed?

    A.Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring

    B.EyeSight Lane Sway Warning system

    C.Subaru’s Blind Spot Detection system

    D.Subaru’s EyeSight Lane Departure Warning

【3】What is the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 5?

    A.Speed up

    B.Move away

    C.Pull over

    D.Turn around

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.The sandwich generation mainly care about their parents’ demands.

B.It is challenging to design a multifunctional car to satisfy everyone.

C.It’s extremely important to drive safely no matter how old the drivers are.

D.Subaru can ensure driving safety of the drivers ranging from teens to seniors.

  • 23、There have been few precious positives during the COVID-19 pandemic but academies may have unearthed one: People look more attractive in protective masks.

Researchers at Cardiff University were surprised to find that both men and women were: judged to look better with a face covering hiding the lower half of their faces.

Dr Michael Lewis, a reader from Cardiff University’s school of psychology and an expert in faces, said research carried out before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were associated with disease or illness.

“We wanted to test whether the idea had changed since face coverings became common and understand whether the type of mask had any effect,” he said.

“Our study suggests faces are considered more attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions. At a time when we feel weak, we may find the wearing of medical masks makes us feel less worried or frightened and so we feel more positive towards the wearer.”

The first part of the research was carried out in February 2021. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of one to ten the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide.

The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were significantly more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly obscured (掩盖) by the book. But the medical face mask—which was just a normal, disposable kind—made the wearer look even better.

“The results run counter to the pre-pandemic research where it was thought that masks made people think about disease and that the person should be avoided.” said Lewis. “The pandemic has changed our psychology in how we view the wearers of masks. When we see someone wearing a mask we no longer think ‘that person has a disease, and I need to stay away’.”

【1】What was people’s attitude to wearing a mask before the pandemic?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Favourable.

    C.Confused.

    D.Negative.

【2】What can wearing a mask offer us according to the new study?

    A.A sense of pride.

    B.A sense of safety.

    C.A decrease in confidence.

    D.An improvement in health condition.

【3】Which of the following makes us most attractive according to the research?

    A.Leaving the face uncovered.

    B.Wearing a plain cloth mask.

    C.Wearing a blue medical mask.

D.Hiding the face partly with a book.

【4】What does the underlined phrase “run counter to” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Be contrary to.

    B.Be similar to.

    C.Be consistent with.

    D.Be based on.

  • 24、A new type of rechargeable battery can rapidly produce charges in large quantities even at-70° Celsius, a temperature where the typical lithium-ion(锂离子) batteries that power many of today's devices don't work. Batteries that bear such extremely cold conditions could help build electronics that function in some of the coldest places on Earth or on other planets.

Inside lithium-ion batteries, ions flow between positive and negative electrodes(电极), where the ions are fixed and then set free to travel back through a substance called an electrolyte(电解质) to the other end. As the temperature drops, the ions move slowly through the electrolyte. The cold also makes it hard for lons to get rid of the electrolyte material that sticks onto them. As they cross the battery, ions must cast the matter to fit into the electrode material, explains a battery researcher at Fudan University. At-40℃, conventional lithium-ion batteries deliver about 12 percent of the charge they do at room temperature; at-70℃, they don't work at all.

The new battery contains a special kind of electrolyte that allows ions to flow easily between electrodes even in the bitter cold. The researchers also fitted their battery with electrodes made of organic compounds(有机化合物) rather than the typical transition-metal-rich materials. lons can flow freely in this organic material without having to get rid of the electrolyte material attached to them. So these organic electrodes catch and release ions more easily than electrodes in normal batteries, even at low temperatures, Dong says.

Because the ions flow better and connect more readily with the electrodes at low temperatures, the new battery keeps about 70 percent of its room-temperature charging capacity even at-70℃. Still, battery cells in the new design pack less energy per gram than standard lithium-ion batteries, says Shirley Meng, a material scientist in California. She would like to see whether a more energy-dense(能量密度高的) version of the battery can be built.

【1】We can learn from Paragraph 1 that the new battery___________.

A.is applied to most of the electronics

B.can work longer than lithium-ion batteries

C.will replace lithium-ion batteries in the future

D.makes using electronics possible in extreme cold

【2】Why is temperature the key factor for lithium-ion batteries to work well?

A.Because it's hard for ions to fit into electrodes at low temperatures.

B.Because electrolytes can't conduct electricity in the cold.

C.Because electrodes are unstable in too hot temperatures.

D.Because lons don't move at low temperatures.

【3】What's the advantage of electrodes made of organic compounds?

    A.Containing more ions.

    B.Making ions more active.

    C.Making the battery rechargeable.

    D.Casting more electrolyte materials.

【4】More efforts will be made towards improving the new battery so that it can ___________.

    A.have a longer life

    B.carry more energy

    C.charge more quickly

    D.be easier to get

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Population Change of European Birds

The breeding bird populations in Europe have seen a great shift over the past three decades, driven by both climate crisis and human interferences, according to one of the world’s largest citizen science projects on biodiversity.

Overall, 35% of birds increased their breeding range. Dr. Iván Ramírez, senior head of conservation at BirdLife Europe and central Asia, said: “Those birds that have been legally protected have been doing better than those which are not protected. This is a really important message within the European Union. We have one of the oldest policies – the Birds Directive – and we can prove that it works.”

In addition, as the climate warms, forests are stretching into northern and agricultural regions. In parts of northern Europe, there has also been tree planting (mainly for wood and paper) and land abandonment (specifically in Mediterranean areas), which benefited many woodland species such as woodpeckers and warblers but caused damage to a number of other species as well. The research shows a total of 25% of birds now occupy a smaller area.

Generally, farmland birds are bigger losers, suffering overall declines in population and reduced distribution because agricultural intensification means there is less food, such as insects and remainder from harvesting. The State of Nature in the EU 2013-2018 assessment showed 80% of key habitats were in poor or bad condition, and intensive farming is a major driver of decline. The UK’s farmland birds have declined by 55% since 1970.

“Predictably, there are winners and losers. We can see how some species have expanded across the continent rapidly and have begun to colonize UK wetlands. In contrast, we can see ranges shrinking as species of northern Europe feel the impact of climate change, and species such as the dotterel are declining in numbers and range in northern Britain,” he said.
