二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Solving the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster would be considered as a good deed, right?   On that basis, a webcam has been set up overlooking the lake. Anyone can tune in at any time.   If you see something suspicious(可疑的), you simply click the “snapshot” buttons to submit a picture for further analysis. It is free, easy, and you can do it for as little or as long as you like, with no login or signup required. What you are doing is micro–volunteering, which offers volunteers a series of easy tasks that can be done anytime, anywhere, on their own terms.

Micro-volunteering could involve anything from retweeting a message to joining a flash mob(快闪). Volunteers do not need to go through an application or training process, or to make any ongoing commitment. The vast majority of micro-volunteering takes place online, but it doesn’t have to. Weeding a garden in a local community center counts just as much.

The key benefit of micro-volunteering is its flexibility. People frequently cite their lack of time as the biggest barrier to volunteering. For many, micro-volunteering removes the need to worry about making long-term commitments once they start volunteering. It enables people who might be excluded from traditional ways of volunteering to participate.

To some extent, micro-volunteering is an approach that aims to help lots of people come together to make a difference. It could take a while to see its impacts. Studies, however, have shown that 65 percent of those who have micro volunteered were still actively doing so one year later. Even though micro-volunteering cannot replace long-term commitments, it serves as a complement(补充)to the more traditional methods of contributing to good causes.

    A.To illustrate micro–volunteering.

    C.Irreplaceable.

    D.Sustainable.

  • 22、The word "orange" describes both a color and a fruit. Which one came first might be surprising. "Orange" when used as the name of the fruit came before "orange" as a word to describe color. While the shade itself existed before the fruit, there was not a name in the English language for the color. Before the introduction of the fruit to English-speaking countries, the color was usually described as a shade of red or yellow.

In the early 16th century, Portuguese traders brought oranges from India to Europe. The Europeans had not seen the bright colored fruit before and didn't have a name for it. The fruits were named "narancia" by Italians and "narange" by the French and were sometimes referred to as "golden apples" by English speakers.

"Orange" was first used in a phrase to describe shades of colors, including in a third-century Greek text translated into English, in 1576. It describes Alexander the Great's servants as dressed in "orange colour velvet (天鹅绒)In 1578, a Latin-American dictionary defined "melites" as "a precious stone of orange color”. While orange represents the color of the objects, it needed the word "color" to follow it in order for the meaning to be clear. In the mid-1590s, Shakespeare described a beard as "orange tawny", one of the first instances of "orange" without the word "color" as part of the expression. Tawny is a brown color often used on its own. Orange was not yet a color, just a shade of brown.

In 1616, in an account describing varieties of tulips (郁金香)that can be grown, orange was used as a stand-alone color. When Isaac Newton performed his experiments on the color spectrum (色谱),he listed it as one of the seven basic colors. After almost half a century, orange   was recognized as a color on its own.

【1】Which is the right time order of the appearance of "orange"?

    A.As a fruit→as a color→the shade itself.

    B.The shade itself→as a color→as a fruit.

    C.The shade itself→as a fruit→as a color.

    D.As a color→the shade itself→as a fruit.

【2】What were oranges called by the British in the early 1500s?

  • 23、   In recent years we’ve been told to aim to walk 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy, although other advice to do three brisk (轻快的) 10-minute walks a day is thought to be even more effective. But the latest piece of research might put a spring in your step if you’re someone who walks at a fast pace. That’s because, according to scientists, the speed at which people walk in their 40s is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing.

The BBC’s Philippa Roxby writes that tests on 1,000 people from New Zealand born in the 1970s found that slower walkers tended to show signs of “accelerated (加速) ageing”. Their lungs, teeth and immune systems were in worse shape than those who walked faster. And to add insult to injury (往伤口撒盐), the study found not only did slower walkers' bodies age more quickly, their faces looked older and they had smaller brains.

This might be seen as a wake-up call for people with a slower pace who might feel it’s time to work out and get fitter. But it might be too late; researchers writing in JAMA Network Open say they were able to predict the walking speed of 45-year-olds using the results of intelligence, language and motor skills tests from when they were aged three. They also suggest that even in early life, there are signs showing which people will go on to have a healthier life.

So, what’s the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain? Well, researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing. This might help us make lifestyle changes while we’re still young and healthy. Any steps we can take to prolong (延长) a good mental and physical state is a no-brainer!

【1】Where is the text probably taken from?

D.It is never too late to start walking fast to become healthier.

【3】Which can be the best title for the text?

    A.Study on Slow Walkers

    B.Healthy Life or Nothing

    C.Walking Speed and Ageing

    D.Benefits of Walking Slowly

  • 24、   Having a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who loves reading. It may be got from your father or your father’s father, and it can just impress people around you with the fact that you are a person of culture.

From my point of view, reading is very important in our daily life. For example, reading is a way of gaining knowledge in different areas. It can help us have a great imagination, and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field. You can express your opinions about a political event because you have read something about that.

Secondly, reading gives us the possibility to enter the world of imagination. We can imagine what life will be like in the future. Sometimes, we compare ourselves with the people in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve the problems and tell us what to do in certain situations. Books are based on real life. Even if writers are considered to be somehow different from common people, they often face the same problems as we all do.

In short, I would like to say that literature is the perfect way of enriching our culture, expressing correctly, having a rich vocabulary, being able to understand different fields and really being considered to be a learned person.

1Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?

A.Reading a lot is good for writing

B.Reading can help us gain knowledge

D.Reading helps us enter the field of politics easily

D.writers often have different experiences in life

3What can be the best title for the text?

A.Why Is Reading Important in Our Life

B.How Can We Become a Learned Person

    C.Different Reading, Different Functions

D.Having a Good Collection of Books Means a Lot
