  • 21、If you’re a fan of fast fashion, your choices may become fewer in the near future.

At the end of 2020, fast-fashion giant H&M said it would close 350 stores worldwide. Recently, Spanish fashion giant Inditex said that it would close all its Bershka, Pull & Bear and Stradivarius stores in China. It all indicates that fast fashion is slowing down, said the website Fast Company.

A major reason is the change in the attitude of consumers. Millennials, those who were born in the 1980s or 1990s, are now the largest consumer group. Unlike their predecessors (前人), millennials are more financially stable, and thus low-priced fast fashion is not their first choice. According to The South China Morning Post, more people are starting to care about quality and the stories behind a product.

Another factor is the growing concern over the fashion industry’s effect on the environment. As The New York Times mentioned, the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters of clean water and three-fifths of clothes produced in a year end up in landfills (垃圾场). As there is more awareness of the climate problems, younger people are preferring more eco-friendly choices.

Molly, 22, is one of them. Before she went to college, she used to frequent fast-fashion shops like Forever 21 and H&M. But after taking a class that focused on the environmental influence of clothing production, her preference changed.

Now, she tries to shop in a way that is both sustainable (可持续的) and affordable: She shops second-hand. “My friend showed me how easy it was to be thrifty (节约的), and I developed a new personal style that focused less on fashions but on basics that don’t go out of style,” she told MTV News.

In order to survive in the competitive market, many fast-fashion brands are making changes as well. For example, Inditex said that the company plans for all of its clothes to be sustainable by 2025.

“Sustainability is a never-ending task in which everyone here is involved,” said Pablo Isla, CEO of Inditex.

【1】Why is fast fashion unpopular among millennials?

    A.Millennials follow predecessors’ style.

B.Millennials pay more attention to quality.

    C.Millennials prefer cheaper clothes.

D.Millennials like products with a long history.

【2】What is Molly’s new way of shopping?

    A.She likes thrifty brands.

    B.She prefers fashionable clothes.

    C.She buys used clothes.

    D.She buys only necessary clothes.

【3】The author used the example of Inditex at the end to show _______.

A.how a major company can change their products to fit the market

B.how sustainability has become the top choice for most fashion companies

C.how the fast-fashion industry is suffering a big loss

D.how competition is becoming more violent in the fashion industry

【4】This passage most probably comes from________ .

  • 22、Five Nutrition Myths and What Health Experts Want You to Know Instead

If you’re looking to improve your diet and achieve your health goals, keep reading to find out what you need to know.

MYTH 1: All fat is bad.

By the 1980s, doctors, government health experts, the food industry and the media were reporting that a low-fat diet could benefit everyone. As a result, many people replaced calories from fat with calories from refined carbohydrates such as white flour and added sugar. 【1】 Examples of those include monounsaturated (单元不饱和的) fats found in olive oil, certain nuts and seeds.

    MYTH 2: 【2】

While the nutrition of plant-based drinks can vary, many have more added ingredients which can contribute to poor health than cow’s milk. Typically, cow’s milk has about eight grams of protein per 250 millilitres. Almond drinks on the other hand, typically has one or two grams in the same amount.

MYTH 3: Potatoes are bad for you.

Potatoes have often been defamed in the nutrition community because of their high glycemic index (血糖指数), which can increase your blood sugar sharply. 【3】 They are also inexpensive and available year-round in grocery stores.

MYTH 4: “Calories in, calories out” is the most important factor for maintaining weight.

【4】 But research does not suggest that eating more will result in becoming overweight or obese. Rather, it’s the types of foods we eat that may be the long-term drivers of those conditions.

MYTH 5: Fresh fruits and vegetables are always healthier than canned, frozen or dried varieties.

Research has found that frozen, canned and dried fruits and vegetables can be just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts. 【5】 However, some canned, frozen and dried varieties contain added sugars, saturated (饱和的) fats and sodium, so be sure to read nutrition labels, especially on prepared foods.

    A.All drinks are nutritious.

B.They can also be a money saver.

C.Plant drinks are healthier than dairy milk.

D.In reality, healthy fats help reduce your risk.

E.It’s true that extra-processed foods can lead to weight gain.

F.However, they are rich in vitamin C, fibre and other nutrients.

G.If you burn more calories than you consume, you will probably lose weight.

  • 23、In December 2019, Lauren Robinson walked into science class. “My throat started closing,” she remembers. “They called an ambulance (救护车), and I had to go to the hospital.” It wasn't the first time that Lauren had to be rushed to the hospital. That's because Lauren, 15, has a food allergy (过敏症).

Many people have food allergies. But Lauren's allergy is much worse than most. She can't eat food that contains milk. When she was younger, Lauren could stay safe by choosing food carefully. That changed in middle school. By eighth grade, Lauren couldn't be in the same room with dairy products (乳制品). That's what happened in Lauren's science classroom. Earlier that day in 2019, students had held a pizza party. Cheese particles (微粒) still hung in the air. Lauren never returned to school after that.

In 2020, Lauren got great news. She could go to school and stay safe by driving a robot to class. Lauren controls it from home over the Internet, using a computer. She uses the keyboard to drive the robot from class to class. A video camera on the robot lets Lauren see what is going on in school. A video screen on the robot let students and teachers see her. It has microphones(话筒) so that everyone can talk to Lauren, too.

At first, Lauren thought that using the robot was “a weird idea”. No one went to school like that. "I kept knocking into walls at first," says Lauren, laughing. “I'd keep falling!” But she got used to it quickly. Using the robot feels natural now. Lauren even created a way to “raise her hand” using the robot's headlights. “I can turn them on and off until the teacher sees me,” she explains.

Lauren looks forward to going to college. She'd like to work in a medical job.

【1】Why was Lauren sent to the hospital and never returned school in December 2019?

    A.She accidentally drank some milk.

    B.She carelessly touched some pizza.

    C.She ate some dairy food.

    D.She breathed in cheese particles.

【2】What do we know about Lauren's allergy?

A.Lauren's throat was totally damaged because of it.

B.It becomes better as Lauren gets older.

C.It often puts Lauren in a dangerous situation.

    D.Lauren was born with it.

【3】The underlined word “weird” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.

    A.strange

    B.clever

    C.wrong

    D.big

【4】According to the text, the robot ________.

A.was easy to control at first

    B.becomes friends with Lauren

C.can communicate with others all by itself

D.makes Lauren feel like she's really in school

  • 24、   We all use different ways to remember ideas, facts and things we need to store. Remembering is an extremely important part of our learning experience. Information process, storage and recall encourage purposeful learning.

But the brain doesn’t store everything we want or need for future use. It makes choices and tends to remember information that forms a memorable pattern. Things you learned recently can be particularly difficult to remember because they haven’t taken root in your mind.

“Forgetting allows us to remember what is really important to our survival. We forget much of what we read, watch, and think directly every day.” writes John Medina in his book, Brain Rules.

How do you avoid losing 90%of what you’ve learned? An inspiring writer and speaker Zig Ziglar once said: “Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.”

Repetition has been a remembering skill for ages. When you hear or read something once, you don’t really learn it-at least not well enough to store the new information for long. The right kind of repetition can do wonders for your memory. People learn or remember better by repeating things or getting exposed to information many times. Others repeat particular steps or processes deliberately a number of times or even years to become better at certain skills.

Daniel Coyle explains in his book, The Little Book of Talent:“...closing the book and writing a summary, even short ones, forces you to figure out the key points, process and organize those ideas so they make sense, and write them on the page. When you pick it back up weeks later, reread all of your notes or highlights to strengthen the ideas even further.”

People learn by repeating things. Better learning is a repetition process. Every time we repetitively access something we already know, we increase the memory’s stored value.

【1】Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.The brain tends to store 90% of the things we learn.

B.The fresher the information is the easier to remember.

C.Thinking is more important than remembering in study.

D.The brain tends to choose and keep what it thinks important.

【2】How does the writer prove his opinion?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By listing numbers.

    C.By borrowing words of experts.

    D.By providing scientific finding.

【3】What does Daniel Coyle want to say in his book?

A.You can’t pay too much attention to repetition.

B.Summarizing is a very effective learning tool.

C.Forgetting forces human brain to make choices.

D.Regular repetition helps to form good habits.

【4】Which do you think is the best title of the passage?

    A.How the Brain Works

    B.Reading for More

    C.Fighting Against Forgetting

    D.Repeat to Remember
