二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The public library was less than five minutes’ walk from my home. It was open for three hours in the evening. Every evening, I would rush to the library after school. 【1】 Without waiting for the librarian to get things ready, I would just turn on the lights in the kids’ section(区域)and start reading.

Every day, fifteen minutes before the actual closing time, the librarian would start announcements and ask people to leave. As a child, I didn’t have a library card, so I couldn’t take my half-read books with me. 【2】 Knowing about my love for books, the librarian started making announcements about the closure only in other sections and the cleaning lady would leave the lights on for me while tidying up the rest of the library. 【3】 Then five minutes before the closure, I would join them in locking up. Very soon, I became part of their opening and closing team!

Five years passed by, and there, I had read most of the books in the kids’ and basic science sections. The librarian always smiled at me and introduced new books to me. Later, during my college days, I would go there to get a quiet place to study. The librarian would simply give me reading room keys and let me stay there. 【4】

After my graduation, I moved away and stopped visiting that library. 【5】 I saw a new librarian and heard those old people had retired. What a pity! I owe that silent librarian and the sweet cleaning lady words of thanks.

A.Recently, I went to the library again.

B.This gave me another ten minutes to read.

C.I managed to stay in the library the whole day.

D.Usually, I would get there ten minutes ahead of the opening time.

E.I would have to put those books back and left with unwillingness.

F.The librarian was the kind of man who just did not look approachable.

G.Studying in the library benefited me a lot throughout my college time.

  • 22、Phrases like “good sharing!” and “great job on the slide!” echo across American playgrounds. Coaches pass out ribbons to every participant. Scholar publishes a series called “I’m Special!” assuring readers that the ability to play with friends and sing songs makes them special indeed.

We’ve been told that high self-esteem is the key to children’s happiness and success, and we’ve been praising and protecting them ever since. But has the self-esteem movement gone too far? Many experts argue that instead of raising healthy high achievers, maybe we’re raising a generation of narcissists(自我陶醉者). “Our old concepts of self-esteem(自尊) are old-fashioned, and parents need to send the concept to the trash heap of all things outdated and useless,” says Aaron Cooper, co-author of I Just Want My Kids to be Happy.

While experts used to blame low self-esteem for everything from bad grades to criminal behavior, research has shown that inflated (膨胀的)self-esteem is more often the criminal. An article called “Rethinking Self-Esteem” by Roy made a stir when he supposed that criminals and drug abusers actually had higher self-esteem than the general population. Martin and Ervin found that the modern habit of constant praise was turning kids skeptical and unmotivated. And esteemed child development expert T. Barry recently wrote in The New York Times that the phrase “self-esteem” had lost its meaning. Parents just want their children to have a positive self-image. And while it’s easy to make fun of the extremes of the self-esteem movement, it’s difficult to walk the fine line between acquiring self-respect and self-centeredness.

Anyway, make it clear that while you have expectations for their behavior, you love and accept them unconditionally. True self-esteem isn’t about a steady stream of applause; it develops when children know their limits and responsibilities, are given enough opportunities to challenge themselves, and feel secure that they’re loved even when they fail.

【1】What’s the purpose of using phrases like “good sharing!” and “great job on the slide!”?

    A.To attract readers’ attention.

    B.To introduce the topic.

    C.To give the author’s opinion.

D.To tell readers the key to happiness and success.

A.Children with high esteem are likely to be high achievers.

    B.In children’s development high self-esteem plays a positive role.

C.High self-esteem makes kids motivated nowadays.

D.High self-esteem does harm to kids in a way.

【3】The proper way to develop children’s true self-esteem is to_______.

    A.give them constant praise unconditionally.

B.let them shoulder all their responsibilities.

C.offer them support even though they fail.

D.have high expectations for their behavior.

    【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards high self-esteem?

    A.Subjective.

    B.Positive.

    C.Objective.

    D.Negative

  • 24、Seventy years ago I was quite a small little girl, the baby of the family, with an older brother and sister. My father was very ill at the time, and my mother took in sewing(缝纫) of any kind so we could live. She would sew far into the night with an old sewing machine. She never complained even when the food would be very scarce. She would sew until the early hours of morning.

Things were very bad that particular winter. Then a letter came from where her sewing machine was bought, saying that they would have to pick up her machine the next day unless payments were brought up to date. I remember when she read the letter I became frightened; I could picture us starving to death and all sorts of things that could come to a child‘s mind. My mother did not appear to be worried, however, and seemed to be quite calm about the matter. I, on the other hand, cried myself to sleep, wondering what would become of our family. Mother said God would not disappoint her, that he never had. I couldn‘t see how God was going to help us keep this old sewing machine.

The day when the men came for our machine arrived. There was a knock at the kitchen door. I was frightened as a child would be, for I was sure it was those men who would take away our sewing machine. Instead, a nicely dressed man stood at our door with a darling baby in his arms.

He asked my mother if she was Mrs. Hill. When she said she was, he said, "I‘m in trouble this morning and you have been recommended by the druggist and grocer down the street as an honest and wonderful woman. My wife was rushed to the hospital this morning, and since we have no relatives here, and I must open my dentist office, I have nowhere to leave my baby. Could you possibly take care of her for a few days?" He continued, "I will pay you in advance." With this he took out ten dollars and gave it to my mother.

Mother said, "Yes, yes, I will be glad to do so," and took the baby from his arms. When the man left, my mother turned to me with tears streaming down a face that looked as though a light was shining on it. She said, "I knew God would never let them take away my machine."

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

I participated in an exchange program where a Spanish student, Jenny, firstly came to live in my home for a few weeks and then I went to live in hers in Spain. I was somewhat nervous but mostly excited about the coming experience.

After the initial excitement, cultural differences began to affect me, causing me to feel anxious and homesick. What made culture shock difficult to deal with was the language barrier. My Spanish skills were not at the level of being able to express how I feel clearly.

The most difficult challenge was the food and meal time. I usually had dinner at 6:00 pm in China, but in Spain we had it at 10:00 pm when I was very hungry! I was a picky eater, and while I ate meat, I still wasn’t very adventurous. But there was a lot of meat in Spanish dishes. There were little kinds of vegetables in their dishes and potatoes were their favourite.

One night, I asked what we were going to eat. Since I didn’t know the Spanish word “conejo” they used, the entire family started acting like rabbits at the dinner table in an effort to help me understand its meaning. I was shocked. But in order not to bother them, I didn’t mention anything about my inadaptation.

When going back to my room after dinner, I just wanted to curl up alone and missed the delicious dumplings my mother made in my hometown. As there was no Chinese restaurant nearby, what I could do was to draw dumplings on papers as if I had eaten them and threw them into the dustbin.
