二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I was in the Sants Cruz Mountains not long ago, speaking and singing at a women’s conference. We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways through our gifts, and something in particular happened during one of the sessions (会议) will remain imprinted in memory.

A young Syrian woman (Lilith) was invited to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that she’d actually come. Just a few days earlier, Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference.

Lilith had witnessed horrors no one of her young age should ever see. Despite the further danger it presented, she’d decided to leave her home and her family to find safety here in America. Knowing some of her story, and seeing her sitting through the sessions at the retreat (畏缩不前) — head, covered in a scarf, bowed toward the floor — broke my heart.

Lilith’s story touched all of us, including Pam, an attendee, who was a quilt maker. Pam had just finished a beautiful quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lilith as a symbol of their comfort and love. Lilith had left her own mother behind in her homeland and I can’t imagine how frightened and alone she felt. But in her absence, I could see there were lots of “mamas” in this community of women, who were more than ready to love her.

During our last session, Lilith was called forward and prayed over, hugged, and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt. I thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent working on it, and the terrible events that led Lilith to this moment — surrounded by the beauty and love the quilt

embodied (包括). I wept. When they told her it was for her, she wept.

A quilt wrapped around a ravaged young woman is just one practical, loving act.

1What is the purpose of the women’s conference?

A.To get together to dance and sing. B.To win equal rights for women.

C.To help others in a practical way. D.To exchange gifts with each other.

2What is the meaning of the underlined word?

A.A place of interest. B.A place of danger.

C.A place of conference. D.A place of shelter.

3Why did Lilith go to America?

A.To attend the women’s conference. B.To find her family.

C.To find safety. D.To find a better job.

4From this passage, we know that the writer is ______.

    A.sympathetic B.enthusiastic

    C.intelligent D.talented

  • 22、Whether hunting or competing for limited space and resources, humans are the planet’s super predator (捕食者). As the human population expands, it’s getting harder for other creatures to find somewhere to hide during the day. Now new findings indicate animals around the world have come up with another strategy: They are becoming nocturnal (夜间活动的).

In a paper published in Science, researchers analyzed 76 previous scientific studies about human impact on animal activity. They compared animals’ activity during the day and night in areas of high human disturbance (from hunting or farming to hiking and other outdoor recreation) and low human disturbance (relatively natural conditions). The analysis showed animals are becoming an average of 1.36 times more nocturnal due to high human disturbance.

For example, in Poland wild boars go from 48% nocturnal in natural forests to 90% nocturnal in urban areas. Even activities people consider relatively innocuous, such as hiking and wildlife viewing, strongly affected animals’ daily rhythms. “We think that we’re leaving no trace often when we’re outdoors, but we can be having lasting consequences on animal behavior,” says Kaitlyn Gaynor, lead researcher for the study.

This is not the first time animals have had to live at night; during the time of dinosaurs, they were also nocturnal. “Dinosaurs were this ubiquitous (无处不在的), scary force, and only after their extinction did mammals (哺乳动物) emerge into the daylight,” Gaynor says. “And now humans have taken over and are pushing other animals back into the night.”

Scientists suspect becoming nocturnal may hurt those species highly adapted to the sun. They might not be able to live well at night, which would ultimately hurt their chances of survival and reproduction. Perhaps even more alarming effects could be in the wider ecosystem. In California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, coyotes have been more nocturnal in response to hikers and have started to alter their diets from daytime prey, such as squirrels and birds, to nocturnal prey, such as rats and rabbits.

Exactly how ecological communities will change, and whether it will be for better or worse, requires further study. Some nighttime shifts may benefit both animals and humans, Gaynor notes. For instance, tigers in Nepal are avoiding potentially deadly conflicts with people as they become more nocturnal.

Studies like this one will eventually help conservation managers make better decisions about how to protect ecosystems. “We’ll need to understand local dynamics to really understand how we should be changing management of wildlife populations or human activities,” Gaynor notes, “One potential approach might be to manage the timing of human activities so that we leave some of the daylight for other animals.”

【1】How do animals respond to increasing human disturbance?

    A.By limiting food intake.

    B.By leaving their habitat.

    C.By controlling population.

    D.By adjusting daily routine.

【2】What does the underlined word “innocuous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Harmless.

    B.Recreational.

    C.Organized.

    D.Irregular.

【3】Why does the author mention dinosaurs?

A.To highlight the importance of daylight.

B.To indicate the domination of humans.

    C.To illustrate mammals’ adaptability.

    D.To demonstrate dinosaurs’ power.

【4】What can we learn about animals’ becoming nocturnal?

A.It has led to a new ecological balance.

    B.It demands more conservation areas.

    C.It may encourage bio-diversity.

    D.It might be double-edged.

  • 23、   Devote yourself to the work you do, not the prize you might get. Hao Jingfang, a Tsinghua University graduate, is pursuing her passion for writing and education.

In 2016, she won the admired Hugo Award with her novella, Folding Beijing, which made her the first female writer in China to bring home this prize. Later on, the author turned to education. She set up Tongxing Academy for public welfare education and WePlanets to promote children’s creativity after school.

In this interview with Easy Talk, Hao discusses her life experience-not only as a writer and educator, but also a parent.

“The major task for society is to help people get better education, to elevate their skill set in line with future technological advancements, and to broaden their horizons,” Hao said.

Since founding her company, Hao has been carrying out voluntary teaching programs in rural areas. “We really want these kids to have better education resources like kids from the cities,” she said. “We hope that the children from rural China, if one day they manage to live in the cities, can do more than car maintenance, for example. They will have the skills to take on other jobs.”

Different from the typical Chinese parents so ambitious for their children, Hao suggests giving kids more space for trial and error. “I do believe the best mentality for parents is to stand behind your children,” Hao said. “Let the child cope with the reality and decide for themselves. If they struggle with obstacles, you can offer them some guidance or encouragement.”

“I’ve had a wide variety of interests since childhood. I’ve got used to doing different things,” says the 35-year-old.

Being an economic researcher, a writer and businessperson herself, she encourages all women to discover their passions. “We live in a big, big world with boundless possibilities, various trades and different vocations. Don’t be too afraid to try something new. When you find the one thing that you want to commit to, you will become fearless to follow your dream.”

1What does the underlined word “elevate” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.research B.improve

    C.recognize D.evaluate

2As far as parenting is concerned, Hao suggests Chinese parents should________.

    A.let their children go freely.

    B.be ambitious for their children.

C.give their children a hand only if necessary.

D.remove their children’s obstacles ahead of time.

3Which of the following best describes the interviewee?

A.Helpful and committed. B.Creative and stubborn.

C.Narrow-minded and responsible. D.Imaginative and demanding.

4What is the best title of the passage?

    A.How to discover a person’s passions.

B.The effective ways to achieve your dream.

C.Great achievements made by Hao Jingfang.

D.Hao Jingfang’s views on writing, education and parenting.

  • 24、Does drinking alcohol really help us stay healthy? If so, how much should we have each day? Recently a study, co-authored by 512 researchers from 243 institutions, was published in the well-known journal The Lancet. The researchers built a database of more than a thousand alcohol studies and data sources, as well as death and disability records from 195 countries between 1990 and 2016. The goal was to see how alcohol affects the risk of 23 health problems. The number that jumped out, in the end, was zero. Anything more than that was associated with health risks.

"What has been ignored is that no amount of drinking is good for you," said Emmanuela Gakidou, a professor at the University of Washington. "People should no longer think that a drink or two a day is good for you. What's best for you is to not drink at all," she said. The study found that 2.8 million people across the globe died in 2016 of alcohol-related courses. For people aged 15 to 49, alcohol is the leading risk factor for experiencing a negative health outcome.

This is an alarming report for the roughly 2 billion human beings who drink alcohol. The report challenges the controversial assumption that moderate drinking provides a clear health benefit. That idea took hold in the 1990s after news reports on the "French paradox": The French have relatively low rates of heart disease despite a fatty diet. Some researchers pointed to red wine consumption among the French as potentially protective.

A large number of studies found evidence that people who have a drink or two a day are less likely to have heart disease than people who give up or drink too much. But the new study, while noting the lower risks of heart disease from moderate drinking, found that many other health risks balance out health benefits. Those include the risks of breast cancer, interpersonal violence, self-harm and transportation accidents.

【1】What can we conclude from the study published in The Lancet?

A.No amount of alcohol is safe.

B.A drink or two day is good for us.

C.Alcohol has little to do with health risks.

D.Alcohol will be forbidden in 195 countries.

【2】What is Emmanuela Gakidou's attitude towards drinking alcohol?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Unfavorable

    C.Admiring.

    D.Unconcerned.

【3】What does the “French paradox" suggest?

A.The French consume too much alcohol.

B.Red wine may cause heart diseases.

C.The French need to go on a diet.

    D.Alcohol benefits human beings.

【4】According to the last paragraph, who are less likely to suffer from heart disease?

    A.Those who have fatty diet.

B.Those who have given up alcohol.

C.Those who drink a little every day.

D.Those who drink as much as they can.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

When I was a baby, my parents gave me anything I wanted. I would play with a toy for a while, get bored, and ask my parents for a new one. Then my dad died when I was 2, and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and family gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world crashed.

That was when the real estate market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good idea as a way to invest her money to take care of us. After the crash, I went from the kid who got a fine iPod and who had the coolest house, to almost having nowhere to stay.

Since then, when I would ask for a new toy or bike, or even to see a movie my mom would say “I’m sorry, honey but we really can’t afford that right now.” But my mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn’t used to hearing “no.” So, for a year or two, I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not.

Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said that I wanted a new video gaming system. I didn’t know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.

    Paragraph 1:

On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked.

    Paragraph 2:

From then on, I wouldn’t ask for anything that I didn’t need.
