二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、On average, Americans spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer or other electronic devices and less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That is a claim by David Strayer, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. In his 2017 TED Talk, Strayer explained that all this time spent with technology is making our brains tired.

Using an electronic device to answer emails, listen to the news and browse the web puts a lot of pressure on the front of the brain, which, Strayer explains, is important for critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making.

Therefore, it is important to give the brain a rest. And being in nature, Strayer claims, helps a tired brain away from too much technology. More than 15, 000 campers from around the world attended an international camping festival in September. That is when friends and family take time off and escape to nature for several days. They take walks, climb, explore, swim, sleep, eat and play. Camping may be just what a tired brain needs.

Take Carl for example. He lives in West Virginia and enjoys camping. He says that staying outdoors makes him feel at ease. It also prepares him for the work he must do. Kate Somers is another example who also lives in West Virginia. She says she enjoys camping with her husband and two children. She calls it a “regenerative” experience.

At the University of Utah, David Strayer has studied both short-term and long-term exposure to nature. He found that spending short amounts of time in nature without technology does calm the brain and helps it to remember better. However, he found, it is the long-term contact with nature that does the most good. He and his research team found that spending three days in nature without any technology is enough time for the brain to fully relax and reset itself.

【1】According to David Strayer, which of the following is true?

    A.Americans dislike outdoor activities.

    B.Electronic equipment should be quitted.

C.New technologies also have some downsides.

    D.Electronic equipment brings great convenience.

【2】Why does Strayer insist we go outdoors?

    A.To try another lifestyle.

    B.To let our brain relax.

    C.To make better decisions.

D.To play with our family and friends.

【3】What does the underlined word “regenerative” mean?

    A.Refreshing

    B.Memorable

    C.Remarkable

    D.Tiring

【4】Which is the proper title for the passage?

    A.Electronic Equipment Harms the Brain

    B.Good Rest Develops Good Memory

    C.Tips on Using New Technologies

D.Being in Nature Is Good for the Brain

  • 22、Susan Williams went to a boarding school. Here is one of the letters she wrote to her parents from the school.

    Dear Mom and Dad,

I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal(校长)is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.

The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.

As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire. There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning. The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.

The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.

I am very sorry about this.

    Much love, Susan.

P.S. None of the above is true, but I have failed my exams. I just want you to know how bad things could have been!

  • 23、Researchers have found that cutting up children's food rather than giving them meals where they have to bite with their front teeth makes them better behaved at the dinner table.

Foods that children have to pick up and bite into using their front teeth — such as chicken or whole apples — encourage aggressive(攻击性的) behaviour, scientists at Cornell University have found.

Children eating chicken on the bone were twice as aggressive as those given the same chicken cut into pieces, the study reports. Those eating on-the-bone chicken also ignored(忽视)adults' instructions more than twice as often and displayed much worse dinnertime behaviour — such as standing on the table or jumping off chairs.

This is thought to be an example of so-called"facial feedback(面部反馈)", where using certain facial muscles improves particular emotions.

Facial feedback from smiling is well known. People holding a pencil between their nose and upper lip — preventing smiling — consider a cartoon far less interesting than those forced to smile by holding the pencil between their teeth.

In the case of eating, foods such as on-the-bone chicken, boiled corn and whole apples require the front teeth to be used for biting.

Showing the front teeth uses the same facial muscle as the one that is used to show aggression, and the feedback may immediately increase aggressive behaviour. Showing the front teeth is a common sign of aggression in the animal world. Being surrounded by bare(龇开的) teeth may make a child feel under threat, further increasing their aggression. As children have less self-control, they are more influenced by facial feedback than adults.

This small study, named Eating Behaviors, looked at six to ten year olds, but the same effects are expected in both older and younger children. The advice from study leader, Professor Brian Wansink, is simple: “If you want a nice, quiet, relaxing meal with your kids, cut up their food.”

1Why is it good for children to have food cut up?

    A. They will eat more.

    B. They behave better at the table.

    C. They will have healthy teeth.

    D. They are happy eaters.

2What may children eating on-the-bone chicken do?

    A. Become less aggressive.

    B. Stand on the table.

    C. Keep seated on the chairs.

    D. Throw the bones.

3Children with a pencil between their nose and upper lip will think cartoons ________________ than those who are forced to smile.

    A. less boring

    B. more aggressive

    C. more boring

    D. less aggressive

4Which food is best for children's behavior at the table?

    A. Small pieces of meat

    B. Whole corn

    C. A whole apple

    D. A bone

  • 24、The twilight (朦胧的) time between full wakefulness and being sound asleep may be packed with creative potential, In a new experiment, people who went into a light sleep were better problem solvers later.

It is said that the famous inventor, Thomas Edison, used to fall asleep in a chair holding two steel balls. As he nodded off, the balls fell into metal pans. The resulting noise woke him. Then, he could write down his inventive ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them.

Researchers tested Edison’s method of cultivating creativity with 103 healthy people. Volunteers came to the lab to solve a tricky number problem. They were asked to change a string of numbers into a shorter sequence (序列). They were told to follow two simple rules. What the volunteers weren’t told was that there was an easy trick to do this task. The second number in the sequence would always be the correct final number, too. Once discovered, this trick dramatically cut the solving time.

After doing this task 60 times, the volunteers earned a 20-minute break. This downtime was spent in a quiet, dark room. Volunteers sat in chairs and held a version of the steel balls that Edison used as “alarm clocks”— it was a light drinking bottle in one dangling (悬垂) hand. The researchers told participants to close their eyes and rest or sleep if they desired.

About half of the participants stayed awake. Twenty-four fell asleep and stayed in the shallow, twilight stage of sleep called N1. Fourteen others progressed to N2, a deeper stage of sleep.

After their rest, participants returned to their number problem. The researchers saw a clear difference between the groups. People who had fallen into a shallow, early sleep were 2.7 times as likely to spot the hidden trick as people who stayed awake. Shallow sleepers were 5.8 times as likely to spot the trick as people who reached the deeper N2 stage.

【1】What can be inferred about Thomas Edison?

A.His creative ideas were often forgotten.

B.He woke himself up from a light sleep on purpose.

C.His sleeping pattern has been studied by researchers.

D.He once got inspiration from a metal ball and a metal pan.

【2】What were the volunteers asked to do in the experiment?

    A.Work out a number sequence.

B.Find out the rules in a sequence of words.

C.Describe what happened in their shallow sleep.

D.Pick out the wanted numbers in the shortest time.

【3】Which group of volunteers did best in the experiment?

    A.Those who stayed awake.

B.Those who slept for the longest hours.

C.Those who woke up from the stage of N1.

D.Those who woke up from the stage of N2.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Write down Your Ideas before You Forget

B.Shallow Sleepers May Be Better Inventors

C.Nodding off May Turn Your Creativity on
