21、 Mr. Garcia, a businessman from Madrid, Spain, is speaking English to one of his customers, Mr. Patton, from Vancouver, Canada. Mr. Garcia slowly approaches Mr. Patton. 【1】. This slow dance continues throughout the conversation until Mr. Patton is against the wall.
What is going on here? Probably a misunderstanding in body language.
Body language is one kind of nonverbal communication which plays a key role in communication.【2】.
For example, in the above case, Spanish speakers enjoy a much closer speaking distance than English speakers.
Another example is eye contact. In many American Indian and East Asian cultures, respect is shown by not looking directly into the eyes.【3】. Because anything less than full eye contact is considered disrespectful or even devious in their culture.
Sometimes gestures used in different languages have contrary meanings.【4】. In Vietnam and China, the gesture for “come here” is quite similar to that of waving “good-bye” in English. Thus, when speakers of these two cultures are leaving each other, fun things may happen.
【5】. The best way to learn gestures for any language or culture is to stay a while in a foreign country to learn not only what people say but how they say it.
A.The latter slowly steps away.
B.Body language is very important.
C.This can produce a humorous effect.
D.But it is not the same in all cultures.
E.Mr. Patton walks slowly in the room.
F.For Western Europeans, the opposite is true.
G.Learning body gestures is rather difficult from textbooks.
22、The sun rises above the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋). Across the frozen sea, a white bear moves slowly.
The bear stops and sways his head from side to side. There is nothing to see but endless ice and red sky. Then his powerful nose senses what his eyes cannot: a beluga whale is nearby.
The bear follows the smell and spots a large hole in the ice where a small white whale is swimming. He silently walks toward the hole, then stops, standing still. The whale does not see the bear, whose white fur makes him appear invisible against the ice.
Finally, the whale swims close to where the bear is waiting. With terrifying speed, the bear comes to life and moves toward the whale. In a moment it is over, and the bear eats his first meal in nearly a week.
Polar bears rule the frozen sea, but their ancestors weren’t always built for ice and snow. The first Arctic bears were brown bears, a species that includes grizzly bears. They came to the icy north over a hundred thousand years ago.
No one knows for sure why these bears traveled to such a cold place. Scientists think they might have wandered north looking for food. Maybe they became trapped by glaciers and couldn’t leave. Whatever the reason, the bears never should have survived.
But they did. They got used to their new environment. Their bodies changed. Their behavior changed, too. Eventually, the bears developed into an entirely new species: the polar bear. You can see some of the characteristics that polar bears developed to survive.
Sadly, these characteristics may now threaten the polar bear’s survival. As sea ice melts due to global warming, polar bears are frequently forced to come ashore. They are poor hunters on land, which means they often go a long time between meals. The polar bear, king of the Arctic, is now classified as a threatened species.
Although the future of the polar bear is unknown, the tale of two bears continues. As temperatures rise, grizzly bears have been spotted moving north into polar bear territory. These longlost cousins, once forced apart by nature, are coming back together again.

23、When leaving school, I was pleased that my exam results meant that I could study engineering at university. But I also wanted to travel before starting my course. A friend of mine told me about the Schools Exploring Society, an organization which helps students take a gap year (a year between leaving school and going to college). It has three foreign journeys a year, taking 16-20-year-olds on science and nature trips. I love being outdoors, and a mountaineering trip to Alaska was on offer. So I signed up immediately.
There was one problem, though. I had to raise a large amount of money for the trip. It was a big task, but I managed to make it. I washed cars, worked in a cafe and also sold off some of my old books, clothes and CDs. Then, just before starting out, I started worrying. Can I do this? Am I fit enough? What if I see a bear?
Seventy of us traveled to Alaska. The first two days after arrival were spent in a school hall preparing our equipment and five tons of food. Then we left for the beautiful Talkeetna Mountain. On the trip we dug paths and recognized plant species. Then we climbed a mountain that was over 6,000 feet high. It was tiring but exciting.
Looking back, a gap year was so right for me. I learned a lot about accepting other people for what they are. We had to help each other and it made me less selfish. My gap year has also made me more able to concentrate. Now, whenever Tm worried about anything, I think I did Alaska-I can do this!

24、 Are you interested in country music? I like it very much! It will take me away for a while after I am tired. The guitars and songs will take me to mountains and fields. Country music usually talks of everyday life and feelings. It’s the spirit of America, easy to understand, slow and simple. Country music developed in the Southern United States. It was the folk music of American countryside. Many of songs tell about the lives of farmers. They talk about love, crops or death.

In the 1920s, people played country songs on the radio, and they made them into records. When people in the countryside moved to towns and cities to look for work, they took their music with them. 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Going to the post office is usually a weekly event for me. I rarely give it any thought other than to drive there, go inside, and drop off my letter or package. However, our world has changed and now I must give careful consideration to this journey, as my age and preexisting condition put me into the “vulnerable” category. I am worried about getting infected with the pandemic. There are decisions that I need to make. Is this a package that must go out now? I conclude that it is. Is there anyone else who can take the package for me? I conclude there is not. So I have made two decisions already. Next, I must determine which of the two post offices closest to me would be the easiest one to accomplish my goal. I realize the larger one would be my best choice. Three decisions have been made!
On the drive over, I determined that I would look to see the number of cars in the parking lot before making my decision to go in. Upon arriving, I concluded that the car population was small enough, so I pulled into an empty space. My next thought was,” Perhaps I should wait for someone to come out and ask them to take my package in? “Then I realized, I would be making contact with a perfect stranger, and what was the difference between talking to that stranger and just going in and talking to the clerk? Next decision made, I walked inside. There were only two people and both were standing at the counters making their transactions (业务). I walked to the front of what was normally a very long line. I was standing alone, waiting for my turn. I was wondering whether this place had been disinfected (消毒) and was safe to stay here.
Shortly, I was called to the window. I could see that the postal clerk was aware of the fear in my eyes. She quietly stepped back from her station and signed to me to come forward. I stepped up to the counter and placed my package on the scale (秤).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
