二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It was 3:21 a.m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking(爆裂声) of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin Long Island.

With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, fell down onto the lawn.

The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother's room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious(昏厥的), and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and, as a fireman said later, "acted with all the self-control of a trained adult."

On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.

First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.

He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?

Grasping firmly a ball of string(线) from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. Tying one end of the string to her hand, he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.

Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan, "The string will lead you to mother." Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

1Why did Glenn run downstairs first?

A.He wanted to find out what was happening.

B.He was worried about his mother's safety.

C.He wanted to save his sister and brother.

D.He went to see if his father had come back from work.

2Who called the fire brigade and ambulance service?

    A.Glenn. B.Glenn's father.

    C.Glenn's sister. D.Glenn's neighbor.

3Glenn saved his family because _______.

A.his father had taught him to do so on the phone

B.he had learned something about first aid

C.he had dealt with the emergency (突发事件) calmly and wisely

D.he had followed his mother's instruction

4This passage is likely to appear in________.

A.a native newspaper B.a scientific report

C.a travel journal D.a fashion magazine

  • 22、When drama teacher Chelsie King asked students at her school to come up with a way for her husband to go around the neighborhood in his wheelchair with their newborn, they were up for the challenge.

Chelsie’s husband, Jeremy, underwent brain surgery for a tumor (肿瘤) three years ago, and since then it has been difficult for him to keep his balance. He wanted to be able to safely hold his baby, but “there’s just really not a ton of resources out there for disabled parents,” Chelsie said. She then asked her colleague, Matt Zigler, who teaches the “Making for Social Good” class, for assistance.

In this course, students design products to help people, and the 10 high schoolers came up with something that could attach to the wheelchair Jeremy uses. They spoke with the Kings about their needs, conducted research on infant (婴儿) car seats and how they are installed, and then used the school’s Maker Space to 3D print several parts and bought others. They even borrowed a wheelchair from the school nurse to use as a model for things like weight testing. “I really feel the students took all my concerns to heart when creating the prototypes (雏形) ,” Jeremy said. Two projects were selected for the students to make — one that connected an infant car seat to Jeremy’s wheelchair and another that attached an entire stroller to the wheelchair.

“Children grow and they grow out of a car seat, so we want Mr. King to be able to walk with his son no matter what age he is,” student Jacob Zlotnitsky said. When they were done making the attachments, the students put the instructions online to help even more people. They finished constructing both designs within one month. The Kings went out with the car seat attachment, and found it worked perfectly. The students were excited to learn that their creation was a hit. “I feel fortunate to have been able to take a class that has allowed me to truly make life easier for others,” Zlotnitsky said.

    A.they had taken the course

    B.their work was successful

C.their work was finished in time

    D.they shared the instructions online

  • 24、Runners who encounter visual and auditory(听觉的) distractions may be more likely to suffer leg injuries, according to a research by the Association of Academic Physiatrists in Las Vegas. Runners often seek distractions from the task at hand. Whether it is music, texting, daydreaming, taking in the sights, or propping a book up on the treadmill(跑步机), more often than not a distraction is welcome. But, researchers from the University of Florida have recently discovered that those distractions may lead to injury.

Daniel Herman, MD, PhD, assistant professor at University of Florida, and his team conducted a research on the effect of visual and auditory distractions on 14 runners to determine what effect, if any, these distractions would have on things such as heart rate, how much a runner breathes per minute, how much oxygen is consumed by the body, the speed in which runners apply force to their bodies, and the force the ground applies to the runners’ bodies when they come in contact with it.

The runners were all injury free at the time of the study and ran 31 miles each week. Dr. Herman’s team had each participant run on a treadmill three separate times. The first time was without any distractions. The second time added a visual distraction, during which the runners concentrated on a screen displaying different letters in different colors with the runners having to note when a specific letter-color combination appeared. The third time added an auditory distraction similar to the visual distraction, with the runners having to note when a particular word was spoken by a particular voice.

When compared to running without distractions, the participants had faster application of force to their left and right legs, called loading rate, with auditory and visual distractions. They also experienced an increased amount of force from the ground on both legs, called ground reaction force, with auditory distractions. Finally, the runners tended to breathe heavier and have higher heart rates with visual and auditory distractions than without any distractions at all.

“Running in environments with different distractions may unfavorably affect running performance and injury risk,” explains Dr. Herman. “Sometimes these things cannot be avoided, but you may be able to minimize potentially cumulative(累积的) effects. For example, when running a new route in a noisy environment such as during a destination marathon, you may want to skip listening to something which may require more attention—like a new song playlist.”

Dr. Herman’s team will continue to investigate the potential relationship between distracted running and leg injuries, and any effect this relationship has on different training techniques that use auditory or visual cues(暗示).

    【1】Paragraph 2 tells us the research ______.

    A.process

    B.results

    C.questions

    D.reflection

【2】Based on the research, runners with auditory distractions tended to ______.

A.breathe heavier and have lower heart rates

B.get an increased amount of ground reaction force

C.apply more force with less oxygen consumption

D.gain a faster speed with slower loading rates

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Running with distractions becomes uncommon nowadays.

B.Listening to a new song while running guarantees performance.

C.Runners are more likely to get injured in an environment without distractions.

D.Runners are advised to minimize distractions in a destination marathon.

【4】What is probably the next task for Dr. Herman’s team?

    A.What determines training techniques.

B.How distractions should be used in training.

C.Why runners use auditory and visual cues.

D.What effective ways can cure leg injuries.

    The Voice of Rigo

Rigo had a loud voice. People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so he would not bother others who were studying.

Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time, he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fun. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled, "Hey!" for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.

When Rigo shouted goodbye as he left for school, his mother shook her head, "Rigo! Be quiet!" When his father drove him to school, Rigo said, "Hey! There's Chris!" He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head. "Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car." At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.

Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes was up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.

After school, Rigo was waiting for his father when he saw Chris again. "Hey!" he yelled. "Chris! Hey!" The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.
