二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Set on a sloped plot (山坡) above Prague in the city’s Troja district, Villa Sophia has no keys, no light switches and a piano that can play by itself. The house can close the windows when it rains and read aloud materials it has selected from the Internet, based on the owners’ interests.

“The house is like a brain,” said Michaela Pankova, who shares the home with her husband, Karel Panek, and their daughters. “It makes decisions for you based on previous experience.” The home, designed by the Prague-based firm Coll Coll, is intended to go beyond automated to autonomous. “As we say, if we have to control it ourselves, it’s not smart enough,” said Mr. Panek, a computer scientist.

The couple wanted no compromises in quality and efficiency. When they couldn’t find a technology that met their standards, Mr. Panek, the brain behind his home’s brain, designed his own system. While family members go about their daily lives, the system collects data and evaluates that data in real time, then comes up with solutions and implements (实施) them. It can accept deliveries when the family isn’t he, thanks to individual door from afar and valuation of the home’s external context. It can preheat the driveway to clear snow and ice(but only if it predicts its use, saving energy otherwise)and lock the doors.

Put energy home security and convenience aside, the system’s benefit is that in developing beyond a smart home system to a smart home it free the homeowner from the burden of constant control.

Mr. Panek calls himself a technology optimist, and Mrs. Pankova said it took her some time to wram up to the system. “In the beginning I wasn’t into the idea of living in an AI house,” she said. “During the time of the preparation and later the construction, I slowly started to be open to the idea.”

【1】What can be inferred about the house from Paragraph 1?

【2】Who did some extra work to improve the control system of the house?

    A.Coll Coll.

    B.Mrs. Pankova.

    C.Mr. Panek.

    D.The couple’s kids.

【3】What is the best advantage of the smart home?

    A.Picking up deliveries.

    B.Saving energy.

    C.Preheating the driveway.

D.Removing the task of constant control.

  • 23、A Florida teen is gaining national attention with her graduation speech and a basket of strawberries. "Care for some strawberries?" Brenda said at her graduation from Mulberry High School. After jokingly acknowledging there might not be enough, she went on, "These are no ordinary strawberries." She held up a series of strawberries, revealing what each represents: sweat, dirt, aches, and pains—they're her motivators.

Brenda described herself as the daughter of two tireless farmers who immigrated from Mexico and spent most of their days working in fields of strawberries, blueberries, and cucumbers. "My motivation has been rooted in my migrant culture." Because of this, she chose to focus on that in her address. "Many students used to be ashamed of their upbringing but today, we're proud of what makes us."

She explained how she grew up under poor conditions. "I'm motivated by my parents' hands that lose feeling from laborious work. Despite the hot sun and body pains, they back me up heart and soul in my education, which weighs more strongly with me than anything else. I must work hard and succeed." Brenda's heading to Stanford University this fall. She also credited some of her achievement to her teacher Higgins, who helps migrant students and the poor.

Her speech has been viewed by thousands online. "Hearing it touched other people's hearts who said they understood my message, I'm struck the same," Brenda said later. Mulberry High School Principal Michael Young was one member of the audience getting emotional. "The speech was very powerful-her fruits did help paint a good picture of things she wanted to convey." Young said.

As for her message to young people struggling, Brenda said, "Past circumstances aren't in charge of your future. If you' re from a poor family, use every resource and try to better yourself.   You're the author of your story."

【1】Why did Brenda bring strawberries to her graduation?

    A.To share her home-grown fruits.

B.To show hardship her parents faced.

C.To better illustrate her speech's topic.

D.To explain the importance of motivators.

【2】What affected Brenda most in terms of her academic success?

    A.Help of her teacher.

    B.Her life experience.

    C.Her native culture.

    D.Support from her parents.

【3】How did Brenda feel about the viewers' response online?

    A.Proud.

    B.Sympathetic.

    C.Grateful.

    D.Moved.

【4】What did Brenda convey to the young?

A.Life is what you make it.

B.Every cloud has a silver lining.

C.Everyone deserves a good life story.

D.Resources in hand decide your future.

  • 24、Far from the land of Antarctica, a huge shelf of ice meets the ocean. At the underside of the shelf there lives a small fish, the Antarctic cod.

For forty years scientists have been curious about that fish. How does it live where most fish would freeze to death? It must have some secret. The Antarctic is not a comfortable place to work and research has been slow. Now it seems we have an answer.

Research was begun by cutting holes in the ice and catching the fish. Scientists studied the fish’s blood and measured its freezing point.

The fish were taken from seawater that had a temperature of -1.88℃ and many tiny pieces of ice floating in it. The blood of the fish did not begin to freeze until its temperature was lowered to -2.05℃. That small difference is enough for the fish to live at the freezing temperature of the ice-salt mixture.

The scientists’ next research job was clear: Find out what in the fish’s blood kept it from freezing. Their search led to some really strange thing made up of a protein never before seen in the blood of a fish. When it was removed, the blood froze at seawater temperature. When it was put back, the blood again had its antifreeze quality and a lowered freezing point.

Study showed that it is an unusual kind of protein. It has many small sugar molecules held in special positions within each big protein molecule. Because of its sugar content, it is called a glycoprotein. So it has come to be called the antifreeze fish glycoprotein. Or AFGP.

【1】What is the text mainly about?

A.The terrible conditions in the Antarctic.

B.A special fish living in freezing waters.

    C.The ice shelf around Antarctica.

    D.Protection of the Antarctic cod.

【2】Why can the Antarctic cod live at the freezing temperature?

    A.The seawater has a temperature of -1.88℃.

B.It loves to live in the ice-salt mixture.

C.A special protein keeps it from freezing.

D.Its blood has a temperature lower than -2.05℃.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.A type of ice-salt mixture.

    B.A newly found protein.

    C.Fish blood.

    D.Sugar molecule.

【4】What does “glyco-” in the underlined word “glycoprotein” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.sugar

    B.ice

    C.blood

    D.molecule

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Im Li Hua from Class 1 Grade 1.Im writing you to apply to join the English Drama Club.

I have been dreaming of performing since I was a child. I have read some of Shakespeares plays, which attract me greatly. Besides, I am good at spoken English because I always practice speaking English with my teachers and classmates at our schools English corner. Also, I won first prize in the English Speech Contest last month. I think there is still much for me to learn to improve myself.

Therefore, I expect to put my time and effort to good use by performing with other club members. I will appreciate it if I am given the chance.

Looking forward to your early reply.
