21、Travel is not only beneficial to our minds, bodies, and souls, but it will be important to many countries and communities that rely on tourism dollars to make ends meet. Now I’d like to go a bit more in depth with strategies for travelers to leave less of a mess behind.
Pack with great care. How you pack sets the tone for how you will interact with the place you visit. Take as little as you can. Pack useful things like a large scarf or a quick-dry towel that can double as a blanket, pillow, or sun guard. 【1】
Save water and energy. Paying for the hotel room doesn’t mean you should waste the resources. 【2】 Take short showers and reuse towels. Turn off the lights and turn down the heat when you leave.
【3】 When you travel with least luggage, it’s not a big deal to hop on a bus, train, or ferry, all of which come with a smaller carbon footprint than private cars or plane rides. Public transportation routes give you a different view of a city and a culture, bring you into contact with locals, and add some colorful stories to your adventure.
Avoid single-use plastic. When hanging out, carry a cloth shopping bag for any purchases. 【4】 Avoid takeout meals that produce waste.
Leave reviews. 【5】 By taking the time to leave a thoughtful review that analyzes the eco-credibility of a place you’ve visited, you can help the business get recognized for its effort, and encourage other travelers to prioritize (优先处理) environmental standards.
A.Use public transportation.
B.Pack more in case of an emergency.
C.Keep your bag light and easy to carry.
D.Avoid using it as much as possible.
E.Treat it as you do in your own home.
F.Carry a water bottle to avoid single-use plastic bottles.
G.This is an important yet often overlooked aspect of travel.
22、By the middle of the second day I know I'm in trouble. In front of me the land stretches up and away towards a distant hill, and into the space, between that hill and me, is crowded one of the most vivid concentrations of color I have ever seen. It starts with the trees. The wet season is the only a few weeks off and almost as if they can smell the coming rains, they have put out their leaves. They are no ordinary green and the dry grasses beneath them are shining with golds, browns, and reds. I want to recreate this scene with watercolors. Although I can make a try at it with words, trying to paint it in my sketch book is another matter altogether. I've already made one attempt: a series of lines in orange and red, with bluish trees placed across them, which now lies face down in the grass beside me.
I've put it there because the last thing I want right now is for someone else to come along and look at it. A young man called Royale walks up the hill. Royale is a sculptor, and, with several other local men, produces pieces of work in the local stone. Recently, and quite suddenly, this work, and that of several other local co-operatives, has acquired an international reputation. I certainly don't want a man capable of such things looking at my own awful painting. So I put my foot, as casually as I can, on the finished one beside me and we resume the conversation started earlier in the day.
I want to talk to Royale about his life here. He, however, is only interested in what I am up to. To begin with, it seems that he considers me a fellow artist, and for a moment I find myself staring into the depths of embarrassment. But when he asks me, "what is painting like?" I realize that this professional artist has never painted anything in his life before. He just wants to go with my colors.
When I signed up for this holiday, I was hoping for an experience like the one I had had four years earlier in Wales. That was my first painting holiday, and I love it. Two things made it great. First was the teacher, a man called Robin, who showed me that what is important about drawing and painting is not the finished article but the process of completing it. The second element of that week was the place. I grew up in places like that, and I connected with it immediately. But it was stupid of me to think that I could reproduce the experience down here, deep in the Southern Hemisphere. Zimbabwe is not a part of me, nor I of it. Trying to draw it for the first time, from a standing start, is like trying to start a conversation in Swahili.

23、What we think about ourselves shows up in the things we say and do. We may even misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves. It’s important to see ourselves in the most positive light that we can. Seeing the good in ourselves helps us to do better, to be better.
We all have days when almost everything about our lives looks gray. On those days, it’s easy to feel bad about ourselves. Looking on the bright side of things can help us transform tough times: “Having a difficult time in one subject doesn’t mean that I’m not a good student.”
The good news is that psychologists tell us that we are hurt less by the misfortunes of life than we are by how we see them. And this is never truer than when applied to how we see ourselves. Not only do we have the choice to paint the events and situations in our lives in the color that we choose, but we also have the choice to paint ourselves in the color we choose. In other words, you get to choose whether the cup is half-full or half-empty when it comes to how you see yourself!
Many teens we heard from also know how important it is to cast a positive vote when it comes to their own self-worth, saying that self-esteem and actions went hand in hand. From becoming a better athlete to getting better grades, from being a friend to attracting better friends, from getting along with your parents to being granted more privileges, self-esteem plays a big role.
【1】In the writer’s view, why may we misunderstand others?
A.Because we can’t put ourselves in others’ positions.
B.Owing to the ways in which we think of ourselves.
C.Due to the fact that we ourselves have a bad time.
D.Because it is hard to put ourselves in others’ shoes.
【2】What should we do if we are suffering a hard time?
A.Focus more attention on our studies.
B.Speak out the bitters and pains openly.
C.Spare some time to see a psychologist.
D.Regard the things around us positively.
【3】What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Psychologists.
B.Misfortunes.
C.Attitudes.
D.Achievements.

B.Life is always filled with pains and sorrows
C.We need to think big to become a success
D.Forget those unchangeable life realities
24、I ALMOST failed out of college and it nearly broke my self-confidence. I had been at the top of my high school class, the total golden child. So when I decided that I wanted to attend Columbia University for graduate school, I was sure it would be close to impossible.
My goals were to prove to myself that my years of academic success in secondary school had not happened by chance and prepare for a career in children’s media. But first I had to get in.
So I enrolled (报名) in a GRE test prep course and threw myself into the class. The first part was pretty scary and by the third, I knew it wasn’t going to get any easier. I reconsidered my plan to take the GRE.
For the first time in my life, I considered how I should go about getting into graduate school. What were my special skills? Would any of them get me into graduate school?
I got a job working on a project sponsored by the dean’s (系主任的) office on campus and enrolled in a class. I had a new plan: Be a top student in the class while working on campus, get letters of recommendation from my boss and my professor, then hope that playing to my strengths like writing interesting papers would be enough for my application.
I worked my butt off (很努力工作) that semester. With finals approaching, I felt confident I would get an “A” in the course, so it was time for step two. I asked my boss to write a letter of recommendation. She immediately agreed. But my professor said no. She did not know me well enough and the semester was not completed. However, I decided I just would not take no for an answer. I asked if she would least write a short note unofficially supporting my application. After some uncomfortable conversations, she finally agreed. In the end, I got in!
I revisit that moment of persistence (执着) again and again. I have leapt into many other opportunities since then. Now I am starting a company born out of my graduate school research in children’s media. Our first product is a mobile game for teen girls that breaks down major life milestones (里程碑) into missions (任务). On its surface, the product helps girls connect with each other. But it also helps them develop the tools to live life without limits.
