  • 22、   As Alice and Mike watched their son Allan graduate from Cambridge University last month, they thought back to the moment he was born.

“I’m so sorry your baby is blind,” a neighbor had said. Even though Allan’s family were middle class and they lived a comfortable life, as a blind child, Allan Hennessy’s future was poor.

The local hospitals could not offer Allan hope of giving him sight because there weren’t enough eye specialists. But when Allan was 6 months old, an opportunity came and Allan’s father seized it. “My dad sold his car, belongings and some of his land to pay for my treatment. We left our home country with very little.”

The opportunity was an operation in London which restored the sight in Allan’s left eye. “My mom remembers the first time I looked at her: the first time we made eye contact. She burst into tears. Since then, I’ve just been rocking on with the little sight I have,” he explained.

For Allan, life as an immigrant was challenging. When he was accepted into Cambridge University, Allan realized there were so many peers at Cambridge.

“I felt visibly different,” he said. When you’re a half-blind guy climbing the greasy pole, everyone can see that and they judge you, even though they are climbing it too.”

But after spending three years at Fitzwilliam College, Allan said it was transformative(改造作用的). “I met the most amazing people from all over the world.” What would his life be like if he had stayed in his home country? “I wouldn’t have a Cambridge law degree; I wouldn’t even be sighted. My family there have faced terrible events. Perhaps I wouldn’t be alive.”

After graduating this summer, Allan is taking up a scholarship at law school.

“If you’ve got a first-class law degree from Cambridge University, that should set you up for life,” he said. “But when you’re a half-blind immigrant living in Britain today, there is so much more I have to do. The journey has only just begun.”

    1When Allan was born, __________.

A.a local doctor offered to help with his eye problems

B.he lived in a poor area

C.his family was ready to move to London

    D.he couldn’t see anything

2The underlined word “ it” in Paragraph 3 refers to __________.

    A.the selling of Mike’s belongings

B.an operation to cure Allan’s eyes

    C.the comfortable life in London

D.the bright future of the family

3How was Allan’s life in Cambridge?

A.He was helped by many of his peers.

B.He worked hard to keep up with his peers.

C.He was bullied by others for many years.

D.He found it challenging but life-changing.

4We can infer from the last paragraph that Allan__________.

A.won’t stop challenging himself in the future

B.is proud of his achievements in college

C.is determined to help other half-blind students

D.is unsatisfied with his life as an immigrant

  • 23、   When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees. The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish - the cleaner wrasse - has also spotted its reflection.

Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection - when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even try to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.

But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.

One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar (声波定位) to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.

Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant (自我知晓的), but not the same extent (程度) as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.

1The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan .

A.doubt whether the mirror test is reliable

B.discover the secret about the fish’s sight

C.develop a better method to replace the mirror test

D.believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees

2Which of the following can replace the underlined part “wrestled with” ?

    A.Presented with. B.Ended with.

    C.Agreed with. D.Struggled with.

3What can we learn from the text?

A.It is relatively easy to test animals' consciousness.

B.Some concepts for humans can’t be applied to animals.

C.Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.

D.More mirror tests are needed to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.

  • 24、   On the night of June seventeenth, happily unaware that I was now less than forty-eight hours from my little “date” with Bryan Smith, I sat down at our dining room table and listed all the questions I wanted to answer, all the points I wanted to address in my book On Writing-A Memoir of the Craft. On the eighteenth, I wrote the first four pages of the “On Writing” section. That was where my writing still stood in late July, when I decided I'd better get back to work... or at least try.

My wife Tabby is the person in my life who's most likely to say I'm working too hard, it's time to slow down, stay away from that disgusting PowerBook for a little while. When I told her on that July morning that I thought I'd better go back to work, I expected a lecture. Instead, she asked me where I wanted to set up.

She thought about it, and said: "I can lay a table for you in the back hall. There are plenty of plugins so you can have your laptop, the little printer, and a fan. "A couple of hours later, she had made me a wonderful little nest there: laptop and printer, my notes, pens, and reference materials...Standing on the corner of the desk was a framed picture of our younger son, which she had taken earlier that summer.

“Is it all right?” she asked.

“It's wonderful,” I said, and hugged her. It was wonderful. So is she.

That first writing session lasted an hour and forty minutes, by far the longest period I'd spent sitting upright since being struck by Bryan Smith's car. When it was over, I was sweating and almost too tired to sit up straight in my wheelchair. And the first five hundred words were uniquely terrifying--it was as if I'd never written anything before them in my life. All my old tricks seemed to have deserted me. I stepped from one word to the next like a very old man finding his way across a stream on a winding line of wet stones. There was no inspiration that first afternoon, only a kind of stubborn determination and the hope that things would get better I kept at it.

There was no breakthrough that afternoon, unless it was the ordinary miracle that comes with any attempt to create something. All I know is that the words started coming a little faster after a while, then a little faster still. My back still hurt, my leg, too, but those hurts began to seem a little farther away. I started to get on top of them. There was no sense of excitement- not that day-but there was a sense of accomplishment that was almost as good.

After that, things can only get better.
