  • 21、   Within 30 minutes of finding out a little boy named Bodie needed a kidney transplant (肾移植),Taylor Pikkarainen signed up to try and be his donor(捐献者).

Bodie Hall, from St. Michael, Minnesota, was born with a rare kidney disorder. Neither of his parents could donate their kidney to him and he needed a kidney transplant badly. “It’s like, how do you ask somebody to donate a kidney?” Bodie’s mom Gloria Hall said.

Dad, Brandon Hall, wasn’t a match, and Gloria had already donated a kidney to Bodie’ s older sister who had the same condition. “This was outside of our control,” Brandon said. He was placed on a kidney transplant list, but doctors advised them to go on social media to spread the word to find a donor.

Nurse Taylor Pikkarainen, is a friend of a friend. She said, “It’s definitely part of my calling, helping people. Even just reading his story and seeing his picture on the Facebook page made me think he was the cutest thing ever.” Pikkarainen, a traveling nurse from Minnesota, was working with COVID-19 patients in New Jersey when she heard about Bodie. She filled out the paperwork right then.

Doctors say it is hard to find a well-matched donor, but physicians at M Health Fairview concluded that Pikkarainen was the best match for Bodie out of several possible kidney donors.

The transplant happened on July 9, which was Pikkarainen’s birthday as well. “There’s no way to express how grateful we are, really,” Bodie’s mom said.

“We just told her ‘Thank you’,” his dad said. “We just couldn’t believe that she was willing to do something like that for us.”

Bodie is taking anti-rejection (抗排异药)medication, which will last for the rest of his life. Fortunately, the two of them have recovered and are doing well. In fact, Bodie’s mom said he looks healthier than ever - and even took his first steps not long after the operation!

  • 22、   The word “invent” comes from a Latin word which means “to find.” Garrett Morgan, an African-American, was one such inventor. His first job was repairing machines in a factory. By accident, he had invented the hair straightener. He sold his products and then continued with his career as an inventor.

Every day, Garrett Morgan watched traffic become more dangerous. Cars, bicycles and walkers all competed to cross the street. Police officers made simple “stop / go” signals at busy crossroads, but cars, bicycles and walkers still rushed into the crossroads at different speeds and many crashed into each other. One day he saw a traffic accident between a car and a bicycle at a busy crossroads. he realized ,the problem with the traffic light, was its poor design: the traffic signal lacked a transition (过渡) between “stop” and “go.”

Morgan invented a new traffic signal that added a “caution (警告)” light that made traffic move more smoothly and safely. His traffic light stood on a T-shaped pole () with arms that flashed a red light to stop traffic in all directions, allowing walkers to cross safely. After walkers crossed, traffic could only go in one direction.

Soon, cities everywhere wanted his traffic light. In 1923, a popular electric company paid Morgan $40,000 to make and sell his invention. Traffic lights today work in the same basic way.

The traffic light is Morgan’s most famous invention. In 1963, the United States government gave Garrett Morgan an award for his life-saving idea.

  • 23、Every morning Grandpa got up early and sat at the table to read his books. His grandson tried to do the same.

One day, grandson said, “Grandpa, I tried to read those books just like you did, but I forgot what I had read as soon as I closed the books. What good does the reading do?”

Turning around, the old man pointed to a dirty basket beside the table and replied, “Take this basket down to the river and bring back a basket of water.”

The boy did as he was told, but all the water was all gone before he got back to the house. Grandpa laughed and said, “You have to run a little faster next time.”

Again, the boy did as he was told. But the basket was still empty before he reached the house. Out of breath, he told grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket. He decided to get a bucket instead.

But Grandpa said, “I don’t want a bucket of water. I just want a basket of water. Maybe, you’re not trying hard enough.”

Again, the boy did as he was told. But when he ran back, the basket was still empty. He said breathlessly, “Grandpa, it’s useless!”

  • 24、SpaceX, a private company, has put 60 Starlink communication satellites into orbit, bringing the total circling Earth to 180. They will bring internet access to underserved areas of the world. But it seems they also mess with telescopes.

When the satellites pass through a telescope’s field of view, they create bright streaks(条痕) that cut through images of the sky, hiding anything that might be behind them and pouring so much light into the telescope that it causes some observations unusable.

“What surprised everyone - the astronomy community and SpaceX - was how bright the satellites are”, said anxiously space experts. Actually SpaceX did talk about the issue elsewhere. The problem for astronomers doesn’t end with SpaceX. Blue Origin, One Web and Amazon plan to launch thousands of communications satellites in the coming years.

In an effort to ease astronomers’ fears, SpaceX is testing one satellite that is a bit different from the others. It was included in the most recent launch and is partially coated in a dark material to make it less shiny and so less visible in telescope images. We don’t have any data yet on whether the coating is working as intended.

Once the satellites are in space, there is no backtracking. While companies like SpaceX do need approval from regulatory bodies(监察机构) for each launch, there is no rule that prevents them from launching an unlimited number of satellites.

“We have to rely on firms such as SpaceX voluntarily cooperating with astronomers to attempt to keep the impacts of their satellite constellations (卫星星座) as low as possible.” said space experts.

With more than 1,500 Starlink satellites scheduled for launch in the near future, that cooperation will need to be speedy if it is going to make any difference.

【1】Why does SpaceX launch so many communication satellites?

    A.To expand internet services worldwide.

B.To make users surf the Internet quickly.

C.To disturb the operation of telescopes.

    D.To further present space research.

    【2】What are space experts worried?

A.Satellites are too shiny to be seen.

B.Satellites occupy the area of telescopes.

C.Too many satellites move in outer space.

D.The normal use of the telescopes is affected.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The number of satellite launches will decrease.

B.Coated satellites can effectively weaken brightness.

C.The regulations of satellite launching are not powerful.

D.SpaceX’s cooperation with astronomers remains to be seen.

【4】What is probably the best title for the passage?

    A.Troubles Made by Satellites

    B.Satellites Threatening Astronomers

C.SpaceX and Its Future Starlink Plan

    D.Cooperation with Astronomy Community

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、书面表达

    阅读下面短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

“When should I begin to acquire good habits?”a young boy asked his teacher.

“How old are you?” asked the teacher.

“Eight years old, sir.”answered the boy.

“Then you have just lost eight years,”the teacher replied.

There is no doubt that habits are formed at a very early age. When one is young, it is easy to acquire good habits.

Good habits are practices that help us in our daily life. The habit of brushing one’s teeth in the morning, for instance, keeps one’s teeth clean and prevents a bad smell which is unpleasant to others. Bad habits such as sticking one’s tongue out, biting one’s fingernails and picking one’s nose, are undesirable ways of behaving in front of others. If we want people to enjoy being with us, we should try to develop habits that are pleasant.

It is said, “We sow an act; we reap a habit. We sow a habit and we reap a character.” The habits we formed at an early age shape our character. Habits are like tributaries(支流) which flow into a river. The river is made up of all its tributaries; a person’s character is made up of all the habits that he or she has acquired over the years.
