  • 21、Like millions of boys and an increasing number of girls, David's dream was to become a professional football star. Now David is England’s most famous mid-field player and a world superstar. David achieved his dream but what about all the other children with the same dream?

Many countries have set up programs to encourage and cultivate young footballers, and this is where the football clubs go to access athletes and find stars of the future. In the UK the clubs send scouts around the country to discover talented children. They watch hundreds of matches played by school teams. When they spot young people with talent, they invite them to train with the club. If they are under sixteen, they still go to school but take part in club training in the evenings and play in the junior team at weekends. Those that are good enough then become youth trainees at the age of sixteen and join the club as a paid member of staff. During this time they receive football instruction and play for the youth team, but it is not an easy life. There is a lot of competitions for places on the team. The salary is low and the job includes cleaning the changing rooms, toilets and senior colleagues’ boots. The trainees also go to college one day a week where they study other characteristics of the football industry such as court maintenance and office administration.

After two years, only a few trainees are good enough to go on to the next stage. There lucky ones are offered a contract with a club and their life as a professional footballer begins. From this point the success of their career and how much they earn depend on their performance and how many matches their team wins. Perhaps, like David, one or two became great stars. However, football is such a fiercely competitive occupation that many players have to become amateur players or leave the profession to find other careers.

【1】Many football programs have been set up with the purpose of ________.

    C.developing gifted football stars

  • 23、   Flu season generally dies down in March and April, but will the coronavirus( 冠状病毒) go with it? Whether the coronavirus that's quickly spreading around the world will follow the flu season and fade away with spring's arrival is unsatisfyingly uncertain. And many scientists say it's too soon to know how the dangerous virus will behave in warmer weather.

Dozens of viruses exist in the coronavirus family, but only seven afflict (折磨) humans. Four are known to cause mild colds in people, which are common, while others are more novel, deadly, and thought to be transmitted from animals like bats and camels. Health officials have labeled this new virus SARS-CoV-2 and its disease COVID-19. The prospect that summer could delay a pandemic is tempting. Earlier this year, Donald Trump tweeted about China’s efforts to contain the virus, saying they would be successful, “especially as the weather starts to warm.”

Viruses that cause influenza or milder coronavirus colds do tend to subside in warmer months because these types of viruses have what scientists refer to as “seasonality,” so the president's comments have some scientific backing. But it's highly uncertain that SARS-CoV-2 will behave the same way. Those currently studying the disease say their research is too early to predict how the virus will respond to changing weather.

“I hope it will show seasonality, but it's hard to know,” says Stuart Weston, a researcher at the University of Maryland, where the virus is being actively studied. As of Tuesday morning, more than 800,000 coronavirus cases had been confirmed in 74 different countries, with experts saying the disease is likely to keep spreading.

And relatively recent research suggests that dry, cold air may also help viruses stay unbroken in the air or travel farther as they become airborne.

Scientists assume that low humidity, which often occurs in winter, might weaken the function of the mucus(粘液)in your nose, which your body uses to trap and drive foreign bodies like viruses or bacteria away. Cold, dry air can make that normally thick mucus drier and less efficient at trapping a virus.

【1】When does flu season usually die down?

    A.Early autumn.

    B.Late Summer.

    C.Late Spring.

    D.Mid Summer.

【2】What does the underlined word mean?

    A.Frightening

    B.Decent

    C.Critical

    D.Unfamiliar

【3】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

A.The reason why people easily get viruses in winter.

B.If you stay at a warm room, you can't get any viruses.

C.Viruses do agree with the dry and cold atmosphere in winter.

D.The low temperature in winter is the main reason for viruses to spread.

【4】From which is the text probably taken?

    A.A health magazine.

    B.A biology research.

    C.An educational paper.

    D.A medical report.

  • 24、We arrived at the hospital to find Dad was very weak, but his smile was as sure as ever. It was another attack of pneumonia (肺炎). My husband and I stayed with him for the weekend but had to return to our jobs on Monday. Local relatives would help Dad get home from the hospital and look after him. But I longed to be able to let him know that we cared too, even when we weren’t with him.

Then I remembered a family tradition when our children were small. When leaving their grandparents’ home after a visit, each child would write a love note to their grandparents. They hid notes in the cereal (麦片) box, under a hairbrush, next to the phone or even in the microwave oven (微波炉). For days, their grandparents would smile as they discovered these signs of our love.

So as I tidied Dad’s kitchen and made up a bed for him downstairs in the living room, I wrote some notes. Some were practical, “Dad, I put the food in the fridge so it wouldn’t spoil.” Some expressed my love, “Dad, I hope you will sleep well in your new bed.” Most notes were downstairs where he would stay for several weeks until he recovered strength, but one note I hid upstairs under his pillow, “Dad, if you have found this note, you must be feeling better. We are so glad!”

Just like his medicines strengthened him physically, these “emotional vitamins” would improve his spiritual health. Several weeks later, in one of our regular phone calls, I asked Dad how he was doing. He said, “Pretty good. I just found your note under my pillow upstairs!”

    A. follow a family tradition

    B. play tricks on their grandparents

    C. show their gifts to their grandparents

    D. give their grandparents a pleasant surprise

3Following the family tradition, the author _______.

    A. often called her father

    B. wrote some notes to her father

    C. longed to visit her father

    D. worried about her father’s health

4Having heard what her father said, the author would feel _______.

    A. surprised   B. lucky   C. pleased   D. sad

5What do we know about the author from the text?

    A. She attempted to comfort her father with love.

    B. She wanted to set an example to her children.

    C. She enjoyed communicating with her father with notes.

    D. She believed that a family tradition was very important.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

    Mum and Her Bank Account

My family had the tradition to sit down by the kitchen table every Saturday night to count out the money Dad had brought home.

“These are for the rent, and these for the groceries,” Mum counted out and divided the big silver pieces.

“I’ll need a notebook,” That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.

After Mum put one or two coins to the side for the notebook, she said that was all we needed to buy for the week and we all relaxed a little. We didn’t have to go downtown and draw money out of Mum’s bank account, which could always give us such a warm and secure feeling for having enough to afford the life.

When Nels graduated from grammar school, he needed some money for high school, We sat by the table and I offered my “Little Bank” which was used for sudden emergencies such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to see a doctor. I laid the box carefully in front of Mum. After counting out the money in the little bank and finding there was not enough, we all agreed not to go to the bank but to find some ways.

Nels volunteered to work in Dillon’s grocery after school and Dad said he would give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We felt relieved.

So many things came out of the little bank that year: Christine’s dress for the school play Nel’s operation… Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the bank to depend on. We never used her bank account.

    That was twenty years ago.

Last year, I sold my first story. When the money came, I thought of Mum’s bank account.

So I hurried over to her home. On arriving, I gave the money to Mum and asked her to save it in the bank. Mum said she was very proud of me and asked me to go with her, because she didn’t know how. I asked how she had done that before. She said actually there was no bank account at all in all her life and she had never been to a bank before.

    注意 1. 续写词数应为80词左右:

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Knowing that there was no bank account at all I felt shocked.
