二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、At the age 12 of my first year in America we rent a small house with a school nearby. I like my teachers, especially my grandmotherly fourth grade teacher, Miss Zoe. She said that I had a lovely name, Yo-lan-da. As the only immigrant (移民) from Cuba in my class, I was put in a special seat in the first row by the window, apart from the other children so that Miss Zoe could teach me without disturbing them.

Soon I picked up enough English to understand nuclear bomb (原子弹) was in the air.   Miss Zoe explained to a wide-eyed class what would happen when a nuclear bomb was dropped. At school, we had air raid drills (空袭演习): a harsh bell would go off and we’d run into the school hall, fall to the floor, cover our heads with our coats, and imagine our hair falling out, the bones in our arms going soft. At home, Mami, my sisters and I prayed every day for world peace. Miss Zoe explained how it would happen. She drew a picture of a mushroom on the blackboard and dotted a rush of chalk marks for the dusty fallout that would kill us all.

It grew cold in November and December. One morning as I sat at my desk looking out of the window, I saw dots (点状物) in the air like the ones Miss Zoe had drawn on the blackboard, then lots and lots. I shrieked, “Bomb! Bomb!” Miss Zoe jumped up and hurried to my side. A few girls began to cry.

But then Miss Zoe’s shocked look faded. “Why, Yolanda dear, that’s snow!” She laughed. “Snow.”

“Snow,” I repeated. I looked out of the window carefully. All my life when I was in Cuba, I only heard about it. From my desk I watched the beautiful snow fall on the side walk and parked cars below. Each snowflake (雪花) was different, Miss Zoe said, like a person, beautiful and special.

【1】Why was the writer put in a special seat?

    A.She hated talking with others.

    B.She wanted to see snow.

C.Her teacher wanted to help her more.

D.Her parents could see her easily.

【2】What does the underlined word “shrieked” mean?

    A.Screamed.

    B.Sang.

    C.Whispered.

    D.Wrote.

【3】What can we know from the text?

A.Snow never falls in New York.

    B.Snow hardly falls in Cuba.

    C.Miss Zoe never saw snow.

    D.Snow is not beautiful.

  • 22、Rise of the robots

The word “robot” was coined in 1920 by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, who imagined artificial, fully functional servants. For most of their history, however, robots have been silent, inelegant devices sitting out of sight in factories.

Things are starting to change, however. Robots have benefited from rapid innovations in smartphones, which brought cameras, sensors and wireless communications. 【1】Robots are leaving industrial settings for everyday life and, will work in supermarkets, social care and much more.

【2】Many industries are facing a shortage of labour in such a pandemic world. Robots are now indispensable, picking items off shelves and helping people pack a rising numbers of boxes. They are even beginning to deliver goods or food right to people’s doors.【3】

And yet many people fear that robots will destroy jobs.【4】The evidence suggests robots will be disruptive but ultimately beneficial for labour markets. A Yale University study that looked at Japanese manufacturing between 1978 and 2017 found that an increase of one robot unit per 1, 000 workers boosted a company’s employment by 2.2%.

For all that, the march of the robots will bring big changes to workplaces.【5】But that need not be the disaster many fear. One example of “bad automation” is self-service checkouts in supermarkets. Checkout staff who retrain to help customers pick items may well find that dealing with people in need is more rewarding than spending all day scanning barcodes in of lasers.

The potential gains from the robot revolution are huge. In Capek’s play, the robots revolt against their human masters and cause mass unemployment and worse. The beginnings of the worlds real robots have not matched Capek’s satire (讽刺). There is no reason to think that their future needs to either.

A.They could not be coming at a better time.

B.The skills and firms that are rewarded will shift, too.

C.The use of advanced technologies lead to increases in hiring.

D.In fact, concerns about mass unemployment are overblown.

E.Firms should recognize the value of retraining and lifelong learning.

F.Having more robots to boost productivity would be a good thing.

G.Recent advances in machine learning have equipped them to make wiser decisions.

  • 23、   Whether work should be placed among the causes of happiness or among the causes of unhappiness may perhaps be regarded as a doubtful question. There is certainly much work which is exceedingly weary and an excess of work is always very painful. I think, however, that, provided work is not excessive in amount, even the dullest work is to most people less painful than idleness. There are in work all grades, from mere relief of tedium up to the profoundest delights, according to the nature of the work and the abilities of the worker most of the work that most people have to do is not in itself interesting, but even such work has certain great advantages.

To Begin with, it fills a good many hours of the day without the need of deciding what one shall do. Most people, when they are left free to fill their own time according to their own choice, are at a loss to think of anything sufficiently pleasant to be worth doing. And whatever they decided, they are troubled by the feeling that something else would have been pleasanter. To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization, and at present very few people have reached this level. Moreover the exercise of choice is in itself tiresome. Except to people with unusual initiative it is positively agreeable to be told what to do at each hour of the day, provided the orders are not too unpleasant. Most of the idle rich suffer unspeakable boredom as the price of their freedom from exhausting work. At times they may find relief by hunting big game in Africa, or by flying round the world, but the number of such sensations is limited, especially after youth is past. Accordingly the more intelligent rich men work nearly as hard as if they were poor, while rich women for the most part keep themselves busy with innumerable trifles of those earth-shaking importance they are firmly persuaded.

Work therefore is desirable, first and foremost, as a preventive of boredom, for the boredom that a man feels when he is doing necessary though uninteresting work is as nothing in comparison with the boredom that he feels when he has nothing to do with his days. With this advantage of work another is associated, namely that it makes holidays much more delicious when they come. Provided a man does not have to work so hard as to impair his vigor he is likely to find far more pleasure in his free time than an idle man could possibly find.

The second advantage of most paid work and of some unpaid work is that it gives chances of success and opportunities for ambition. In most work success is measured by income, and while our capitalistic society continues, this is inevitable. It is only where the best work is concerned that this measure ceases to be the natural one to apply. The desire that men feel to increase their income is quite as much a desire for success as for the extra comforts that a higher income can acquire. However dull work may be, it becomes bearable if it is a means of building up a reputation, whether in the world at large or only in ones own circle.

1What is the author’s opinion about work?

A.Work can keep people busy as if they were poor.

B.Work is a cause of the greatest delight of life.

C.Work is very tiresome, especially when too excessive.

D.Work can at least give relief from boredom

2The reason why the more intelligent rich men still work hard is that ________.

    A.they want to overcome boredom

B.they want to earn more in case they meet with business failure

C.they do not have any sensations in life

D.they have to pay the price of their freedom from hard work

3In the author’s opinion, what is the last product of civilization?

A.To make wise use of leisure. B.To be free from hard work

C.To keep oneself busy with trifles. D.To work to some extent

4As is put by the author, most of the work that most people have to do is ________.

A.delightful but time consuming B.exceedingly dull and always painful

C.not worth doing and bearable at all D.not interesting but rewarding

  • 24、How to decorate with what you have

Maybe you are someone who does not believe in spending a ton of money on things. After all, DIY does work wonders! In any case, the fact of the matter is that most of us would prefer to spend a little less money on our home decorations. 【1】 So, let’s see what we can do to decorate our homes with the lowest cost.

    Create a splendid wall

By creating a splendid wall, we do not mean building one. What creating a splendid wall means is simply decorating one particular wall in your preferred room with some things you might already have. These things could include the amazing piece of artwork hanging in your bedroom. 【2】

    Books! Books! Books!

Books have sat too long in your shelves, collecting all that dust. 【3】While a book or two would certainly promote that coffee table’s sitting grace, a few carefully placed ones could make the desks at your home feel more interesting.

Show memories that are dear to you

Within our lives, we will find that we have been with some amazing people, visited some amazing places and shared some great times. 【4】Whether it is the first painting your child made or the first gift your partner gave you, why not revisit and honor it as part of your home?

    Design a plate display

【5】They have a contrasting shape or color with their surroundings. So, it is time to add some plates you have rarely used to the wall! Not only do plate displays look absolutely fun against a plain wall, but they can also greatly raise the overall playfulness of any decorations or colors around them.

A.It is time to introduce them to their newer homes.

B.Some objects we have remind us of those magical experiences.

C.Thankfully, as the saying goes, “the best things in life are free”

D.Some items can be the eye-catching parts of your home decoration.

E.So it’s fun to share it with others, or even revisit it, in our safe place.

F.Or it could be a special mirror that is standing covered in your house.

G.Another equally important fact is that decorations are almost necessary.
