21、The Pygmalion fleet refers to a possible influence that people’s expectations can have on other people’s performance. Therefore, it directly links the initial expectations we have about a person’s abilities and the performance that this same person ends up having.
High expectations lead to better performance and low expectations lead to worse; both effects are called the self-fulfilling prophecy (自我实现预言). It is interesting to analyze the self-fulfilling prophecy because it can affect us both positively and negatively. The positive effect is referred to by the term “Pygmalion effect”, which strengthens the characteristic you want to influence, and it produces an increase in self-esteem (自尊). We call the adverse effect “Golem effect”, which produces a decrease in people’s self-esteem and their performance.
The Pygmalion effect can also be called the Rosenthal effect. Rosenthal was a professor of social psychology at Harvard University who, together with Lenore Jacobson, carried out a famous experiment to see the effects of the self-fulfilling prophecy in education.
Rosenthal and Jacobson gave a non-verbal (非语言的) intelligence test to the students at the beginning of the course, informing the teachers that the analysis predicted the intelligence level of the students. Then, they selected, without any regular plan, a sample of 20% of the students in each class, thus creating the experimental group. The teachers were informed that the selected “good students” had greater potential for progress, while for the rest they did not say anything, the latter becoming the control group.
After eight months, an intelligence test was passed on to all the students and the conclusion Was that those students who had been rated as more intelligent had improved more than the rest. This experiment allowed scientists to show that the positive expectations of those around us have a direct good effect on our performance and our results. They create a better atmosphere and are more open to giving information and encouragement. A person is not “still” and permanent, but is changing and developing through their experiences. Educators have a role that can be vital in making up for socioeconomic differences among students, and are able to strengthen those that can have added difficulties to reach their greatest potential.

22、Educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune will soon make history as the first black person to have a statue in the U. S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, when her statue replaces that of a general.
Bethune, the daughter of formerly enslaved people, was an influential educator and activist who founded the National Council of Negro Women, advised multiple U. S. presidents and created a boarding school for black children that would later become Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach.
The 11-foot statue weighs more than 6,000 1bs…It was created by artist Nilda Comas, who was chosen from a field of 1,600 applicants and is the first Hispanic master sculptor to create a statue for the National Statuary Hall State Collection. Before she started sculpting, Comas conducted a four-year thorough research, which she called “a beautiful journey.”
The statue features Bethune wearing a cap and long dress and a pearl necklace, holding a black rose in one hand and a walking stick in the other. She’s standing in front of a pile of books, with a warm smile and what one local reporter described as eyes that “register wisdom kindness.”
The base of the statue is inscribed(铭刻)with her name, her home state, birth and death dates, as well as one of her most famous quotes, “Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it may be a diamond in the rough.”
The black rose represents Bethune’s work in education, as well as her belief that “loving thy neighbor” required interracial, inter-religious and international brotherhood, according to a nonprofit organization.
“Although there is no species of flower called a ‘black rose’, Dr. Bethune was attracted by beauty of a rose with a particular dark colour,” it explained. “These dark roses instantly became her favorite. She thereafter referred to her pupils as her ‘black roses’”

23、Sign language, the primary form of communication of the deaf community, has been in use for hundreds of years. You're probably most familiar with American Sign Language, but sign language is used all over the world and has nearly 150 variations. Sign language interpreters can be seen everywhere from classrooms and graduation ceremonies to major sporting events.
When you think of sign language, you most likely imagine signers using their hands to form words and letters. However, hands are only one of the many different body language techniques that signers use to get their meaning across. In fact, much of the grammatical structure of sign language is not indicated by the signer's hands.
While the hands are responsible for forming the words themselves, markers called "non-manual elements" control much of the languages' grammatical structure. Non-manual elements (or markers) are body language techniques that don't use the hands. These include head movements, body positioning and facial expressions. Used together with the signs. these elements give sign language a subtle and extremely complicated grammatical structure. Linguist Andrea Lackner from Alpcn-Adria University in Austria did a study that shows just how important these non-manual elements are to sign language users.
The study assessed just how many different things non-manual elements can do. For this study, all participants were deaf users of Austrian Sign Language. They watched a video of someone using sign language, and they had to describe the purpose of each non-manual element. The results were very complicated. For instance, things as subtle as the direction of the signer's gaze can indicate whether or not a statement is hypothetical(假设的). A single head movement can indicate the emotion of a statement, a conditional or if situation, or a signer's feelings toward a hypothetical question. Body language is always important, but in sign language, it can change the entire meaning of a sentence!
【1】What do signers use their hands to do mostly?
A.To know people's words and letters.
B.To understand people's meanings.
C.To form the grammatical structure.
D.To form words and letters.
【2】What do non-manual elements include?
A.Words, sign language and body language.
B.Head movements, body language and signs.
C.Head movements, body positioning and facial expressions.
D.Body positioning, facial expressions and signs.
【3】What does the study show about sign language?
A.The main function of the non-manual elements.
B.The importance of the non-manual elements.
C.The influence of body language on sign language.

24、 Mary Somerville was born in 1780 in Burntisland, Scotland. Her contribution to mathematics was in both algebra (代数) and differential and integral calculus (微积分学).
Mary was one of the world’s first famous female mathematicians. She became interested in mathematics and decided to study it at the time when it was considered unacceptable for a woman to do so. She bought books on algebra and geometry and read them at night. In spite of disapproval from people around her, she firmly went on with her struggle to learn. She won a prize for her solution to an algebra problem. She went on to write several books on mathematics. Later in her life, she thought deeply about the years in which she had persevered (坚持) almost without hope and said, “It taught me never to lose heart.”
Mary’s way of learning remains useful today. If she worked for a while on a problem without coming up with an idea, she stopped working and turned her attention to the piano, her needlework, or a walk outdoors. She then returned to the problem with a fresh mind and a solution turned up. If she could not understand a passage while reading, she would forget about it and read on; several pages later, the meaning of the puzzling passage would become clear to her.
【1】Why did Mary decide to study math?
A.Because she found math interesting and wanted to study it.
B.Because she was one of the world’s first famous female mathematicians.
C.Because it was not considered acceptable for a woman to study math.

25、Not long before, my daughter’s shoes were scratched (划破) with a knife. She burst into tears. I took them to the shoemaker’s.
The young apprentice (学徒) glanced at the _________ and said, “I can do nothing except _________ the upper.”
His master looked at them and said, “If you _________ me, I will add more scratches on both the shoes.”
I was _________ and asked why.
He explained, “As if the openings were made _________ for a special style.”
I didn’t fully understand him, _________ I decided to leave the shoes.
Two days later I dropped by from work to _________ the shoes. I found more scratches on each shoe; all the openings were patched (缝补) by soft red leather; the stitches (针脚) were twisted with the appearance looking more _________ and interesting than ever. I couldn’t help praising the master’s skill.
Another time, my sister’s blouse was torn, leaving a large opening. My wife checked it _________, and then said, “Let me take it home and mend it.”
Three days later, seeing it again, I was greatly __________: all the torn parts took on a look of ice crystal (水晶); attached to it was a snowman made of flowery rags. I sighed with __________, “It’s amazing!”
“I was __________ by that shoemaker. Patches are supposed to be ugly, but a skillful craftsman (工匠) can make it take on a kind of __________,” replied my wife.
Her words inspired me more: perfection is impossible to achieve in __________; patches appear in the form of injury, disability or disease. Since you can’t change the existence of the wound, you should not __________ people’s sympathy by disclosing the wound, which is meaningless. Just sew a patch on the wound and produce a most beautiful flower on it, and that is the significance of life.
