21、“We give our girls the power to believe in themselves, go to college, and become tomorrow's leaders,”says Felicia Gibson Jaycox, the founder (创立者) and chief executive officer of The Power of You Teens (POYT). The organization is based in Harlem, a historic African-American neighborhood in New York City.
Founded in 2014, POYT offers educational chances and positive (正面的) role models for teenage girls growing up in Harlem. These "Power Girls" take part in dance, summer camp, and STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), among other programs. The purpose, according to the group, is to empower teenage girls to help them "dream big and to inspire (激励) them to achieve the most that they are capable of.”
POYT held its sixth yearly Empowerment Event in the fall of 2019 in New York City. The theme of "Girl Boss" inspired girls to show their inner boss spirit. Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris was the keynote speaker.
Kaliegh said that she and other beauty competition winners are helping to reshape traditional images of beauty and showing that women of color are not just beautiful-they also are driven, wise women whom little girls can look up to.
I asked Ashley McFarlin Buie, POYT co-director, what inspired founder and CEO Felicia Gibson to start the organization. Gibson saw the plight that girls of color are in. For some historical reasons, many girls of color are growing up in terrible neighborhoods. They seldom see people like themselves showed positively in movies, books, TV shows, and other media.
"Powerful girls grow up to be dependable and confident women, preparing for their futures as creative leaders," Buie said. POYT centers on saving the mind, body, and spirit of Black girls through love and support, she added.
What do the girls get out of the group?" We offer chances,” Buie said." to break barriers (屏障).”

22、 Sea otters (海獭) are pretty small compared to other marine mammals (哺乳动物).which means that, despite their fur coats, they tend to lose het quickly, and need lots of energy to keep up their body temperature.
"So they need to eat 25 percent of their body weight each day," says Sarah McKay Strobel, a sensory ecologist at UC Santa Cruz. "But in order to eat that much food, that means sea otters need to find all that food. " She studied the otter's senses, to solve the mystery of how they're such efficient food catchers. Vision isn't reliable, she says- it's pretty dark and muddy underwater, and crabs and other smaller animals tend to hide. Hearing is also tough for otters, in the noisy underwater environment. And sniffing's no good either. "When they're underwater they're holding their breath."
What's left is touch. So Strobel measured the sensitivity of the otters' paws and whiskers (须). She blindfolded an otter named Selka, then presented it with plastic plates carved with tiny grooves (沟槽). Selka's job was to select the plate with two-millimerter grooves, which she'd been trained to associate with tasty food, instead of plates with differently sized grooves.
Tums out, Selka could tell just a quarter millimeter difference in the grooves' with with her paws - above and below water - and hall a millimeter difference with her whiskers. "The fact that she was able to perform so well while moving extremely quickly I think is really interesting and suggests that sea otters have very quick decision-making abilities and very quick sensory processing abilities, which makes sense when you think about the type of lifestyle they lead and how quickly they need to find food."
For the record, humans can feel the difference too, but it takes us 30 times longer, which might make sense. After all, we live in environments where touch is less important in a hunt than sight and sound.
【1】Why do sea otters eat much food?
A.To swim faster. B.To stay warm.
C.To keep their fur thick. D.To satisfy their good appetite.
【2】What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.An introduction to Selka. B.The use of plastic plates.
C.An experiment on Selka. D.The function of otters' touch.
【3】What did Strobel find about sea otters' senses?
A.Hearing is useless. B.Touch is the most elective.
C.They have no vision. D.Their smell works very well.
【4】What can we learn from the text?
A.Sea otters have enough food to eat.
B.Humans are more sensitive than sea otters.
C.Sea otters respond very quickly in hunting.
D.Sea otters' whiskers work better than paws.
23、Can ducks help solve the problem of locust? That is a question being asked in Southern Asia. Like the region of East Africa, the nation of Pakistan is trying to keep masses of locusts from eating the country's crops.
The insect invasion in Africa was caused by the weather. But experts say the one in Pakistan is a side effect of a civil war in the Middle Eastern country of Yemen. Because of that war, officials haven't been able to do enough pest control to keep Yemen's locust population from growing, so the insects obviously increased and made their way north east eventually landing on Pakistan.
Locusts don't directly attack people. They threaten us by eating our crops. And so many of these insects in such large numbers can destroy regional food supplies. That's why Pakistan declared a state of emergency early this month , saying it was dealing with the highest number of locusts in more than 20 years. So what can be done about it? Some experts say pesticides are needed to kill masses of these insects, but there's another idea being considered in China. It may send ducks to Pakistan — as many as 100,000 of them — to fight the locusts by eating them. An expert interviewed by the Bloomberg media company says one duck can eat more than 200 locusts per day, and China has reportedly used ducks to successfully solve a locust problem in the past.
But not everyone is on board with this. A member of China's delegation to Pakistan says there's not enough water in Pakistan's hot dry climate to keep the ducks going. Whatever methods are used to control locusts in Asia, the situation in Africa is getting more hopeless by the day.
【1】According to the paragraph 2, what caused the locust outbreak in Pakistan?
A.There are no natural enemies to eat locusts.
B.The civil war of Yemen affected pest control.
C.The government of Yemen didn't do any pest control.
D.The weather in Pakistan caused the increase of locusts.

A.Destroying crops.
B.Changing the weather.
C.Polluting the air.
D.Directly threatening human security.
【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “is on board with” in the paragraph 4?

24、Mom was a teacher most of her life. When she wasn’t in the classroom, she was educating her children or grandchildren, correcting our grammar, starting us off on collections of butterflies, flowers or rocks, or inspiring a discussion on her most recent “Book of the Month Club” topic. Mom made learning fun.
It was sad for my three brothers and me to see her suffering in her later years. At eightyfive, she suffered a stroke (中风) and she went steadily downhill after that.
Two days before she died, my brothers and I met at her nursing home and took her for a short ride in a wheelchair. While we waited for the staff to lift her limp body back into bed, Mom fell asleep. Not wanting to wake her, we moved to the far end of the room and spoke softly.
After several minutes our conversation was interrupted by a muffled sound coming from across the room. We stopped talking and looked at Mom. Her eyes were closed, but she was clearly trying to communicate with us. We went to her side.
“Whrr,” she said weakly.
“Where?” I asked. “Mom, is there something you want?” “Whrr,” she repeated a bit stronger. My brothers and I looked at each other and shook our heads sadly.
Mom opened her eyes, sighed, and with all the energy she could gather said, “Not...was. Say were!”
We suddenly realized that Mom was correcting Brother Jim’s last sentence, “if it was up to me...”
Jim leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Mom,” he whispered. We smiled at each other and once again shook our heads.
