21、I still remember the first day of fourth grade. Later that day, my teacher read us a chapter from The Witches by Roald Dahl. Instantly, I was impressed by Roald Dahl’s clever and amusing style of writing, as well as the complex details of his story. It was as if the writing had flown off the paper and been illustrated (插画) into a picture book. To this day, I consider Roald Dahl my hero because of his exceptional play of words that has led me to understand the power of writing.
Through writing, Roald Dahl was able to show readers the wonderful but mysterious path of life. He shared with others the strong feelings of great success, joy, tragedy and violent anger. Reading his books is often like riding emotional roller coasters, where one moment, you are alongside the characters, laughing at their foolishness, but the next moment crying for their mistakes.
I remember when I first read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a classic novel about a penniless family whose son, Charlie, found a golden ticket that changed their lives. The story was centered on how anyone has the chance for success, but unfortunately also the chances of letting their ego(自我) override their moral values (道德价值).Through Roald Dahl’s carefully planned plot, Charlie showed me the childish joys of life are often overlooked, when they are actually the foundations for success. He showed me the bitter realities of life, where sometimes, others will move on without you. But mostly, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opened my eyes to the world of reading -- where there would always be a character by your side, guiding you through your own life journey.
Although I have never met Roald Dahl personally, I was able to understand and gain insight (洞察) into his personality through the characters he developed in his novels. Roald Dahl used his understandings to skillfully strengthen the characters’ thoughts and actions. Roald Dahl is my hero. He is able to put lifelong lessons and his brilliant imagination into a simple novel that can be understood by anybody.
Roald Dahl’ s writing is admirable not only because of his attractive and interesting stories, themes and characters, but also because of the great efforts he put into developing, his unique and individual style of writing.

22、The spread of COVID-19 meant millions of people faced the effects of loneliness. They asked how they could still find a sense of community when told to stay apart. One neighborhood responded in a creative way — a resident (居民) created some interesting “I Spy” games in which people of any age could join.
Emily Nelson, a person living in the Sunnymede neighborhood in South Bend, Indiana, created these games by using a Facebook group. At first, she asked people to tape paper shamrocks (三叶草) on their front windows or draw them in chalk on their driveways — anything that would be noticed by kids walking on the sidewalk. Neighborhood kids could add up how many they found and post the pictures to the Facebook group.
The neighborhood response was positive, so Nelson drew up a calendar through mid-April with other themed days, including Disney characters, Mario, hearts for healthcare workers, dinosaurs, and a bunny hunt. Nelson encouraged the walkers to dress in costumes that match the themes. In this way, she thought they’d enjoy themselves better in the special period.
For any neighbors who didn’t have themed objects, decorations, or chalk to use, another neighbor would put together packets of coloring paper that he or she could drop off in mailboxes as required. According to Nelson, she and her family saw more than 28 Disney characters posted around the neighborhood on the most recent day. Even the mailman, according to local people, took notice and asked about the sudden appearance of Disney items in windows.
Kids were not the only ones who had been excited. Neighbor Carolyn Evans wrote to Nelson on the Facebook page, saying, “We had a great time looking for characters today! What a fun thing for all of us to do! THANK YOU for creating this and THANK YOU to all of our neighbors who are taking part in it! Thanks to Nelson’s new games, grateful community members were a little closer to finding new ways to stay in touch.

23、Christmas in the United States is traditionally a time of gift-giving and family gatherings. But small towns across the country have their own traditions.
Middleburg, a small town in the state of Virginia, is known for its horses. For more than 50 years, Middleburg has organized a yearly Christmas parade. Men and women ride horses through the woods and fields. They follow hunting dogs as they search for a wild fox. But first, these hunters ride in the yearly parade, wearing their bright red hunting clothes and hats.
John Hale, a citizen of Middleburg says many city people visit his town. “We have a lot of people from an urban area that come to visit, but it incorporates a lot of the old traditions.” The night-time hayride is one such tradition. Small groups gather under the moonlight on an open wagon (四轮马车) filled with hay (干草). The passengers sing as farm horses pull the wagon slowly across the fields.
There are some newer traditions, too. Trey Matheu works at the nearby Salamander Resort. He says a visit to Middleburg is a chance to slow down for a day. He says Middleburg can be a calming, peaceful place without tension.
“Middleburg is an opportunity to take a step back, to take a deep breath, and understand that even though life is moving on at a very fast pace, there’s really an opportunity where you’re allowed to step off for a little bit.”
Parade organizers say more than 13,000 people attend even in below freezing weather. But if you ask, you will hear many different reasons why people come to watch the parade:
“I come here because I’m from a small town. I like how everybody comes together.”
“I live right down that street, right there. And that’s my dog.”
Middleburg looks its best at Christmastime. That may be why so many people return each year.

24、When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry. Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted. People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle. To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distances as people with two eyes.
【1】We should take good care of our eyes .
A. only when we can see well
B. only when we cannot see perfectly
C. even if we can see well
D. only when we realize how important our eyes are

【3】Having two eyes instead of one is particularly useful for .
A. seeing at night
B. seeing objects far away
C. looking over a wide area
D. judging distances
【4】People who suffer from astigmatism have .
A. one eye bigger than the other
B. eyes that are not exactly the right shape
C. a difficulty that can be corrected by an operation
D. an eye difficulty that cannot be corrected by glasses
