  • 21、   Many cities in the world are benefiting from the night activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla (游击队) gardeners. Armed with trowels, spades and a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of color. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed overnight with brightly-colored bedding plants.

In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the effort of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion.

Not only do the guerrilla gardeners beautify ignored places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means that the area doesn't look depressing in the winter months.

The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job is at an advertising agency. Mr. Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local governments to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block.

He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the movement. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to restore neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefully-organized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is also a website where would-be urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition.

    B.beautify the neighborhood

C.attract attention for his ad agency

【3】Why did the guerrilla gardeners often return to their night working places?

    A.To look after these plants.

    B.To enjoy these beautiful flowers.

C.To change the varieties of the plants.

D.To help plants live through winter months.

【4】What can be inferred about these guerrilla gardeners?

A.They will later get well paid.

B.They become more and more organized.

C.They are mainly from the United Kingdom.

D.They are still not accepted by the local government.

  • 22、I’m an architect. One of my services is helping clients move into new office space. Last year, a client was moving into a storefront. The space had formerly been occupied by a photography studio, which looked as if it had been abruptly abandoned.

Piled against one wall was a huge pile of photos. I gazed at one photo. A family, all dressed up, smiling. They'd put on their best clothes, come here to the studio, sat for the photos. A moment in time captured (捕捉到) a moment of life. I stood there, picturing all those smiling faces packed into a dumpster (垃圾大铁桶). Two days later, after getting permission, my family drove two minivans to the abandoned studio. We loaded armful after armful of photos into the vans.

“We'll have to put them in the basement. I wonder why the company just left them there," my wife Dawn said when we got home. "It was said the company had gone broke and shut all its stores around the country, " I said.

We pulled the photos into the basement. I looked up the company, a national chain. There were news stories about customers around the country losing their portraits (肖像),calling phone numbers that no longer worked. I imagined what it would feel like to lose a treasured family portrait. I knew all about the power of small gestures to give someone a welcome shot of hope.

The kids helped me sort the photos. We made a spreadsheet of names and whatever contact information we could find, sending a group text message inviting people to set up a time to collect them. People began arriving at the house. But it was only a few people.

“Try social media," said the kids.

I posted a message to a community board on Facebook. The phone rang. And rang. E-mails poured in. Then the COVID-19 temporarily blocked our project. When lockdown eased, we restarted reuniting people with photos, returning more than 60 of the 105 photos.

【1】Where did the author find some deserted photos?

    A.At his working place.

    B.At a friend's home.

    C.At his former office.

    D.At a client's studio.

【2】What drove the author to take the photos home?

    A.His curiosity to study them.

B.His eagerness to help the owners.

C.The intention to collect them for fun.

D.The idea of selling them for money.

【3】What might have delayed some photos' journeys back to their owners?

    A.The breakout of a disease.

    B.The poor mailing channel.

    C.The owners' neglect.

    D.The author's hesitation.

【4】What would the author feel about the outcome of the event?

    A.It's disappointing.

    B.It's imaginable.

    C.It's encouraging.

    D.It's interesting.

  • 23、Elizabeth Mitchell’s new “Liberty’s Torch” is the fascinating story of how the Statue of Liberty came to be. The Statue of Liberty’s rough history is explored in “Liberty’s Torch”.

Frederic Auguste Bartholdi is an all-but-forgotten figure in American history. He was, however, responsible for one of the most enduring symbols of the United States: the Statue of Liberty. A Frenchman from Alsace, he designed and built the Statue of Liberty which stood on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor. How this statue came to be is the fascinating subject of Elizabeth Michell’s new book “Liberty’s Torch”.

The power of Mitchell’s narrative is convincing (令人信服的). We recognize the Statue of Liberty now as a symbol of hope and opportunity for a nation of immigrants. At the time, though, people could not see that — nor did they even imagine that. Instead, the construction of the statue was born of one man’s desire to set up a great monument.

For this reason, perhaps, “Liberty’s Torch” relies on Bartholdi as the connecting thread. Bartholdi went to Egypt to make photographic copies of the main monuments. On the boat, Bartholdi met and began a lifelong relationship with Ferdinand de Lesseps, the man who would build the Suez Canal. Maybe it was this friendship, or maybe it was seeing Egypt’s huge monuments, but finally the trip inspired Bartholdi’s dream to create the largest statue ever built. Failure to bring this to completion in Egypt, followed by his exile (流放) from Paris, led Bartholdi to sail to America.

By explaining the Statue of Liberty’s hard history and showing Bartholdi’s brave spirit, Mitchell has done a great service.

【1】It can be inferred from the text that ________.

A.American people have never forgotten Frederic August Bartholdi

B.the Statue of Liberty wasn’t originally regarded as a symbol of hope

    C.Bartholdi finished the Suez Canal

D.Bartholdi was a famous architect from Egypt.

【2】What was the main reason for Bartholdi to build the Statue of Liberty?

A.To finish his education in the arts.

B.To mark his friendship with Ferdinand.

C.To create something better than Egyptian monuments.

D.To achieve his dream to create the largest statue.

【3】What type of writing is the passage?

    A.A travel guide.

    B.A book review.

    C.An announcement

    D.An architecture report.

  • 24、   It is the year 3000. I come to a place where I can’t see any water, plants or animals but black clouds in the sky and sand everywhere. It’s very dry so I drink some water that I carry with me. A native sees what I do and asks “What is it?” I pour some water and tell him it’s called water. “Oh, I’m so lucky that I can see water!” the man shouts in an excited voice. “You have never seen water? But how can you live without water?” I ask.

“Harry, get up, it is 7 o’clock, or you will be late!” a voice comes to my ears. “Oh! What a strange dream I dreamed just now!”

In class, I always think of that dream. And I also think of the fresh air, clean water, blue sky, green plants and animals in our world nowadays. How beautiful our life is!

But in order to make more money, people have built more and more factories. These factories send out waste smoke and water with chemicals which are harmful to the environment. The pollution is becoming worse and worse, and as a result, some animals and plants die out. With the development of agriculture, farmers spray aerosol (喷雾) and fertilizer, which also pollute the water and air. In the street the cars and buses are sending out heavy smoke which pollutes the air badly. Even tourism is harmful to the environment. When some tourists travel somewhere, they throw the plastic bags and rubbish onto the ground.

These behaviors are polluting the environment and the environment will become the greatest problem of the world. We shouldn’t pollute the environment any more. Otherwise more and more animals and plants will disappear. And maybe my dream will come true in the future.

    1In the place I come to, I can’t see   .

    A.plants B.man

    C.clouds D.sand.

2From the passage we can infer Harry is the name of .

    A.a dog B.one of the author’s friends

3The author the environment of the future.

A.is satisfied with B.is worried about

C.is angry about D.has an optimistic attitudes towards

4From the passage, we can conclude _______ is the cause of the polluted environment.

    A.cars and buses B.fertilizer

    C.tourism D.man
