21、If non-musicians play arhythm-based (基于韵律的) game using musical instruments for eight weeks, they can become better at remembering recently seen faces; that is, their short-term memory for non-musical tasks improves, a new research showed.
Previous researches have shown that musicians tend to have better short-term memory than non-musicians about music-related tasks. However, we don’t know whether the benefit still exist when it comes to non-musical tasks or to non-musicians who are learning to play an instrument. It is not clear how the change might actually be seen in the brain.
Theodore Zanto at the University of California, San Francisco thinks the benefit will continue to exist. His research team performed a research of 47 non-musicians for eight weeks, who were divided into two groups. Group l was asked to play a musical rhythm training game and group 2 was asked to play a word search game. At the start and end of the research, participants took a short-term memory test to measure their ability to remember a face they saw seconds before. Only group 1 showed an improvement on their scores.
Brainwave data (数据) showed an increase of activity in the right superior parietal lobe (上顶叶), a brain region associated with encoding (编码) visual information and attention. This suggests, says Zanto, that the rhythm training is improving the brain’s ability to focus attention on a task and change what you are doing into memory.
The ability to remember and recognise faces tends to decline as we age, so any possible way to change that is important, says Josh Davis at the University of Greenwich, the UK. However, in order to make the result of this research completely convincing, it should be shown in real-world facial recognition situations as well as in lab-based tests, says Davis.

23、What is the first thing that pops into your mind when someone mentions a construction site? Is it the dusty air, the noise of heavy machinery, the toiling workers soaked(湿透的) with sweat or the quiet enjoyment of books?
The latter is what one construction site in Xiamen city, East China’s Fujian province, is now known for. It quickly became the focus of attention on World Book Day, which fell on Saturday, thanks to a construction contractor(承包商) building a library for the site’s 200-plus workers.
The library is located in a portable container that is around 18 square meters. It was set up by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co, earlier this month to promote reading and bring knowledge and pleasure to the construction workers.
Over 2,000 books in different categories, are neatly placed on shelves. On the wall hangs a bulletin board listing six rules for borrowing books. The room is air-conditioned so the workers can read comfortably there.
“I like reading all kinds of books, ranging from nonfiction to romantic novels. The library has them all, ” says Li Chenghai, a migrant worker from Southwest China’s Sichuan province.
Compared with playing games on mobile phones or getting hooked on short-video apps, Li prefers reading as books can help him remain calm and broaden his horizons.
Li’s view is echoed by his fellow worker Dongqun, who also comes from Sichuan. Dong is more interested in books on health, cooking and parenting. “The work at the construction site is tiring. I want to learn something to keep myself healthy and inspire me in my daily life,” Dong says. She has worked on many construction sites, but this is the only one with a library.
Yi Jingxing, a 45-year-old worker, also frequents the library. “I like martial arts novels. Whenever I am free after work, I come here to read,” says Yi, who dreamed of being a martial arts hero as a kid.

24、We are living in an age in which data is strongly favored, especially when it’s reported in the media. “Big Data” is considered even more reliable as it consists of very large amounts of information. Percentiles are considered hard evidence, even if the conclusions drawn from the data don’t mean a whole lot. For example, “40 percent of adults say they use Instagram and about three in ten report using Pinterest or LinkedIn,” a Pew Research Center survey reported in April 2021. Is that a lot or a little? I don’t know, but the numbers are seemingly presented as being significant in some way.
Meanwhile, unless an argument is “data-based”, it is considered flimsy. One might repeatedly see something with his/her own eyes, but ironically (讽刺地), in this era of data, it matters little. Observations and any conclusions drawn, even by experts in a relevant field, have been downgraded to “personal perspectives”, even though they are based on real, documented behavior.
In short, if something is published in a journal with quantitative support, it carries much weight. If a cultural anthropologist (人类学家) with a Ph.D. reports a particular trend from field research, however, it is considered a short amusing story that may complement the “real” data-based studies. People want to know the “sample size” of cultural research, not understanding that valuable insights into human behavior can be gained without metrics (度量学) and analytics.
The many weaknesses associated with quantitative research should not be ignored, either. There are numerous ways to design a study and gather findings, each one likely to produce different results. The move to online research has made findings much more questionable, as nothing got from the Internet should be taken too seriously. Besides, how questions are both asked and answered is highly subjective and dependent on many variables.
Why do we love data so much? Words are imprecise and have multiple meanings, while numbers are precise and definitive, a big reason why we put so much faith and trust in data regardless of its source. To legitimize (证明……有理) this post, note that 88.6 percent of what I’ve said is true.
