二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I went up to my mother's bedroom after her death and found a box full of papers. Inside was a letter. “Dearest Andrew,” it began, “there was never a right time to tell you.”

Along with the letter was my adoption paperwork—“Parents: unknown”—and two newspapers. The first described a newborn baby, wrapped in a pink blanket, discovered on a doorstep by a paperboy. The second was from a year later, reporting that the baby was still in a children’s home, yet to be adopted.

It was a shock. My childhood was happy; my adoptive father died when I was eight, but my mother made sure I couldn’t have had a more loving home. I didn’t do anything about trying to find out my birth parents for 15 years. However, there were so many questions. Why did my mother abandon me? Did she get into trouble? I didn’t feel angry with her for leaving me, but I wanted to know more about the circumstances surrounding my birth.

I started to research my history and went on local television news. Amazingly, a man called Ronnie got in touch with the TV station, saying I reminded him of his father, Angus. We met up and I was surprised to see a man 20 years my senior. We arranged a DNA test. The results were positive—Ronnie was my half-brother.

Ronnie told me that my father would have been 60 when I was born. He died before I started my search. My father was having an affair with a young woman during the year of my birth, but she is now married with her own family and I should respect her privacy. I would like my questions answered, but not at the expense of her happiness. “Abandoned” is such a sensitive word, but I don’t feel any sadness or rejection, because I don’t know the circumstances of my birth. Instead, I feel unique.

1From the passage we can know that Andrew .

    A. was wrapped in a blanket when found

    B. was brought up in a children’s home

    C. served as a paperboy when his mother died

    D. was abandoned by his birth parents a year after birth

2What contributed to Andrew’s looking for his birth parents?

    A. Anger.   B. Curiosity.

    C. Bitter childhood.   D. Present poor life.

3What can we know about Andrew and Ronnie from the passage?

    A. Neither has seen Angus.   B. Neither is the son of Angus.

    C. Both have the same father.   D. Both are at the same age.

4Why did the author give up searching for his birth mother?

    A. He hated her because she abandoned him on a doorstep.

    B. He didn’t have evidence due to his father’s death.

    C. He felt it lucky enough to find his birth father.

    D. He didn’t want to put her into trouble.

5Which of the following words can best describe the author’s attitude towards his adoptive mother?

    A. Dissatisfied.   B. Forgiving.

    C. Grateful.   D. Concerned.

  • 22、If you are looking to improve your relationship with your parents, you are not alone. 【1】 There are a number of steps that can be taken to make a better relationship with your parents.

Be grateful. Consider all that your parents have done for you. You may find yourself feeling thankful to your parents. You will be more willing to improve the relationship. Let your parents know that you are appreciative for all they have done for you. 【2】 For example, get them a nice gift. If you live with your parents, do some extra housework without being asked.

【3】 Often, people do not get along because they fail to take others' perspective. Accept that your parents are different. Think about the ways that their lives may have been different from your life, and how these different histories may be contributing to issues in the relationship.

Avoid unnecessary arguments. Sometimes arguments are unavoidable, but do your best to avoid unnecessary quarrels. This may mean that you have to bite your tongue when one of your parents says something controversial. 【4】 If it is, make the point clearly and modestly in order to avoid an overly emotional argument.

Don't ask for their advice unless you really want it. Sometimes problems arise in relationships between parents and children, particularly at the teenage years and beyond, because parents can try to give advice that might hurt your sense of independence. 【5】 Otherwise, you may be opening the door to frustration on your part.

    A.Put yourself in their shoes.

B.Be happy with them for this.

C.Show your appreciation with your actions.

D.It can hurt to feel taken for granted, even for parents.

E.Problems between parents and children are common.

F.So try only asking for their advice when you really want it.

G.Determine whether the need to respond is really necessary.

  • 23、   According to some researchers, you should not praise children for everything that they do. It does not help them build self-confidence.

Most parents and teachers agree that praise can help increase children's self-confidence-the more, the better. However, according to some researchers, only proper praise is good for children. If adults praise everything children do, it makes children look for praise all the time, not trying to do their best. "Teachers should not say things like 'good job 'or 'nice work' whenever a child does anything. They should encourage them to continue to improve,” some researchers advise.

Another idea is that children with high self-confidence are happier, and do better at school. About this, Marshall Duke, a researcher in children, says, "High self-confidence brought in by too much praise does not make children happier, get more, or become able to do more. Finding a child's advantages and developing them can help build confidence more than too much praise can." Praise also loses its effect if it is given equally to all students.

"It's important to tell children the truth about what they've done. Honest feedback(反馈)is far better than empty praise," Duke adds. "People have got into the habit of not telling children when they’re wrong. That makes it hard for them to deal with difficulties when they grow up. That's just how the world is."

1According to some researchers, if parents praise their children too much, their children will   .

    A.always look for praise B.increase self-confidence

C.become strong D.do better in their studies

2In order to help children build self-confidence, some researchers advise parents to .

A.make them live more happily B.let them do more difficult work

C.help them do better in school D.encourage them to improve

3Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?

    A.Praise makes children become successful.

B.Children don't know what they’re really good at.

C.The same praise for all children has no meaning.

D.Duke thinks praise is more important than finding children's strengths.

4The underlined word "it" in the third paragraph refers to .

    A.the effect B.the praise

    C.the advantage D.the confidence

5What is the last paragraph about?

A.It's important to have the habit of praising children.

B.Children should know their mistakes as soon as possible.

C.We should praise children honestly and tell them their mistakes.

D.What children with high self-confidence are like.

  • 24、   I developed postpartum depression (PPD) (产后抑郁症) after giving birth to my first son. Actually I started feeling bad before I even had my son. The night I arrived home after giving birth, I had my first panic attack. I doubted I was having a slight heart attack.  The next day,  a public health nurse visited our home to see if everything was fine with me. She reassured me that I didn’t have a heart problem, and informed me that it was likely a panic attack. The nurse visit was part of a program that provided support for new moms. Sadly, it didn’t include any information on PPD.

By my six-week postpartum checkup, I knew something was wrong. I was having difficulty falling asleep and I felt like I was slowly going crazy. Panic attacks were more frequent. I talked with my obstetrician (产科医师), but unfortunately, she was not trained to recognize or cure PPD. Now I didn’t know whom to turn to for help.

I told my situation to my mom and my husband but they didn’t understand what I was really experiencing. They figured that being a new parent was tough for anyone, so feeling a little down after giving birth — “baby blues” — was just normal and not necessarily a sign of depression. But my cousin, also a new mom, knew me well, and she could see that something was wrong.

With my cousin’s encouragement, I went to see my family doctor and I was finally diagnosed (被诊断为) with PPD. I started taking medication, and began to feel better. Eventually, I rehabilitated, feeling like my old self again.

It is common for new moms to get the “baby blues” mixed up with PPD. I do think more attention should be drawn to the latter. After all, a new research finds that about 1 in 7 new mothers will be seriously troubled by PPD.

1Why did the nurse visit the author?

A.To care for her baby. B.To cure her of her heart disease.

C.To help check her condition. D.To offer her information on PPD.

2After talking with her obstetrician, what did the author realize?

A.She was really suffering from PPD.

B.Her obstetrician couldn’t really help her.

C.She should have received training in PPD.

D.Her obstetrician didn’t really care about her.

3What does the underlined word “rehabilitated” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.recovered. B.succeeded.

    C.resigned. D.returned.

4What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?

A.To tell about her suffering “baby blues”.

B.To express her ideas about giving birth.

C.To call for attention to postpartum depression.

D.To show the importance of family to new moms.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文

The five children in Larrane Leech’s day care group were outdoors early, painting landscapes under the dizzy sun. By 10 a. m., it was time to find shade, so Larrane decided they would walk down to the river.

“We’re going to pick berries now, ” she announced. A nature lover, Larrane insisted they spend as much time as possible outdoors.

Larrane handed each child an empty jar and called for Pal, her one-year-old German shepherd (德国牧羊犬). The group made its way over the dusty road and then onto a dirt path through the trees. They stopped at the first berry bush and got busy picking berries, cheering and talking excitedly.

A young cougar (美洲狮)cocked an ear toward the birdlike chatter and sniffed the air. Stepping over the thick carpet of pine needles, the cougar moved quietly toward the children.

Larrane sensed the children suddenly go quiet. She looked up to see the back end of a cougar, the size of Pal, standing over one child, Mikey. The sight of the cougar near her kids immediately froze Larrane. Larrane couldn’t tell whether Mikey had been bitten. Her mind racing wildly, she darted toward the cougar. Desperately intending to grab its tail, she shifted aim at the last minute and seized the cougar by the neck. She shook it from side to side. Instantly, the cougar wheeled toward Larrane. Growling and hissing, it stretched up high and brought its paws down upon the head of the woman. Although still in its youth, it had all the teeth and muscle a cougar needs to pull down a victim three times its size. This animal was capable of killing her.
