21、By the time I took Kicker home, I was living in a van (旅居房车), so he was thrown into van life from day one. At this point, I knew how to make him an outgoing and adaptable dog, and my life was far more adventurous than it had been...
Right out of the gate, I took him to ski touring, which is a lot like cross-country skiing but in wilder terrain. At first, Kicker would just stay nestled (依偎) in my jacket, but as he got stronger, he would run on his own for a little while before I carried him again.
We also went on some winter camping adventures in the high peaks of the Uinta Mountains, and we tried snow kiting. He ran around while I skied. He learned to speed-fly and kiteboard. One time he vomited (呕吐) all over the new cushions on my bed. Boy, did that stay smelly for days! Still, living in a van with a dog was great. With each new day, he got stronger and more independent.
I had dreamed of visiting Alaska since I was a child, so being able to share that trip with Kicker felt incredible. There’s something to be said about shared experiences and how they help develop a strong bond. Together we kayaked, snowmobiled, and even ended up exploring deep blue ice caves in Worthington Glacier. Kicker learned to come snowboarding with me in the mountains of Alaska. He would hike part of the way, and I would carry him the rest. I would always let him run next to me as I boarded, but I usually ended up putting him on my shoulders for the rest of the ride down—he had grown far too big to fit in my jacket.
Having a dog has been one of the most rewarding things in my life. For me, it’s about the time spent together exploring, sharing experiences, working through challenging situations, snuggling, and ultimately taking care of one another.

22、The summer months are fast approaching, and the excitement of new adventures and outdoor experiences are on the horizon (地平线). Now is the time to start booking locations for camping and van sites. But where to go? Which one to choose? Here are some useful tips for you.
Choosing the best campground location
Everyone has different needs when it comes to booking an ideal spot for spending time outdoors. Contact the campground directly and well in advance and ask what campsites and areas tend to be the best fit for what you’re looking for, such as family-friendly, older crowds or quieter grounds. For a less crowded experience, book your stay during the week instead of the weekend. Some of the most popular destinations for camping in America include the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which boasts (拥有) wildflowers, hiking and a scenic 11-mile ring road that can be walked or cycled; Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular places to put up a tent, with 13 campgrounds to choose from, including camping with an RV; the Mojave and the Colorado desert meet at Joshua Tree National Park, an ideal spot to park an RV.
Where to set up a tent
Location! This is vital when considering where you will be setting up shop, especially when it comes to a good night’s rest. Find a flat and dry campsite and build the tent on higher ground in case it rains so it won’t get flooded. Look for natural elements to help keep you warm. Trees and large rocks will keep the wind out and the warmth in. Be aware that the campsite should be close to things such as toilets, water, roads and playgrounds.
【1】What should you do to have a pleasant camping?
A.Telephone the campground on arrival.
B.Choose to go with friendly families
C.Go camping during the week.
D.Set up the tent on the weekend.
【2】Which campground will you choose if you like cycling?
A.The Colorado desert.
B.Joshua Tree National Park.
C.Yosemite National Park.
D.The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
【3】Where should you put up your tent on a cloudy day?
A.On the level and warm place.
B.On the high and flat place.
C.Next to large rocks.
D.On the place near big trees.
23、 The rumor proved all too bitterly true: Park’s hardware, a downtown institution of Orono for over 100 years, would be closing. Locals cross-examined, and begged Lin, the owner of the store, but it seemed useless. Running a small, local, family-owned hardware business was no longer profit maker. The town’s love for Park’s Hardware was just not enough to allow it to compete against the giant warehouse stores.
I was one member of the excited masses that began to walk through Park’s as, day by day, the lettering on the front window changed from “20% OFF EVERYTHING” to “30%,” “40%,” and on and on, until the only things left were the light sockets and doorknobs.
Compared with giant warehouses, a hardware store is special. I recall the time I was exploring in one giant warehouse for a wireless doorbell that Park’s didn’t carry. I found the thing, but didn’t understand the following note on the package: “Red light indicates condition of the battery.” “Excuse me,” I said to a clerk, holding the item out, “I can’t seem to find the red light.” The man examined it, and said, “Neither can I.” I compared this experience with one I usually had at Park’s. “Lin,” I’d beg. “Can you…please…I don’t know…do you think…?” And quicker than one could say, “little red light,” Lin would spring into action and together we’d sit down to find the solution.
I could buy a single screw at Park’s. At a warehouse I have no choice but to buy a box of a hundred screws. But I don’t want a box of a hundred screws when all I need is one. I just want to know the location of the little red light, and now that Park’s is gone, I realize that I never will.
【1】Why did Park’s decide to stop its business?
A.The owner invested in other business B.The owner couldn’t make enough money
C.Its location was not convenient for shopping D.It couldn’t win enough love from the locals
【2】What did Park’s do before closing?
A.It had a closing down sale B.It looked for a new owner
C.It struggled for its reorganization D.It distributed its goods to regulars
【3】What does the writer’s experience in Paragraph3 suggest?
A.The good service of Park’s B.The benefit of having more choices
C.The pressure of competition for Park’s D.The responsible working attitude of large stores
【4】How did the writer feel about the closing-down of Park’s?
A.Supportive B.Sorry C.Surprised D.Uninterested

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Pamela Jones is a nurse, mom, and grandmother and she has over 25 years’ experience in the field of medicine. After she graduated from her medical school with her medical degree, she was devoted to numerous hospitals in Michigan and more. She is also a volunteer of a non-profit organization, which mainly helps some people suffering from different kinds of slight diseases and offers some medical care.
Last Tuesday, Pamela was driving on the way home after seeing a patient. She was traveling westbound on 1-276 around 8:30 pm. Then suddenly, she was hit by a car that switched lanes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Her car tuned, flipped over and crashed into an embankment. Her car was badly damaged. The causing-traffic-trouble car was damaged too, but it fled away. Thankfully, she survived. However, she could not remember much about what happened.
Saving lives is a daily thing for Nurse Pamela Jones. But, at this time, it was she who needed to be saved. Unfortunately, dozens of cars moved past her but no one took the time to stop and help her. “There must have been 150 cars that drove by,” Pamela recalled. She couldn’t move and her phone was out of reach, so she had to wait for help in her car.
Mike Lottier and his son Drew were driving on the way home, too. They had just returned from the city where Drew’s grandparents lived. It was Drew who first found her car. He noticed that glass debris was everywhere, the sunroof was destroyed, and the car was crashed out of shape. Seeing these, Drew shouted, “Dad, there is a car accident ahead.” Mike drove slowly toward the damaged car. Soon they arrived at the scene.
