二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In the basement of a landmark 27-story tower in Stockholm, Petterson is hoping to sow the seeds of an indoor urban farming revolution. He is the chief executive of Plantagon, a new urban farming factory, set to kick off operations in the basement of an office block in the Swedish capital.

He is by no means the first enthusiast for indoor farming, which has become increasingly fashionable in recent years. Claims for the practice of growing food in basements range from feeding people in desert environments to transforming the negative environmental effects of monoculture farming.

Plantagon's early promises reflect this new optimism. Petterson calls the farm's approach "agritechture": the combination of agriculture, technology and architecture hoping to revolutionize how we live and eat.

The term may be new, but the concept isn't. Indoor farming is made possible by agricultural technologies such as hydroponics (growing plants without soil) and aeroponics (in which plants are grown in air over containers). Food can be produced without direct sunlight or soil.

Plantagon plans to grow high-value foods in a pumice-like material rather than soil. Water for the plants is measured precisely. It will also dehumidify (除湿) the air and reuse any extra water to ensure zero waste. Compared with conventional agriculture, it will need much less water to produce the same amount of crops.

Energy is also a key issue for indoor urban farms, which have to create artificial sunlight. Although advances in the efficiency of LED lights have helped bring down energy consumption in recent years, plants use only about 1 percent of the artificial light produced. This leads to a great waste of energy, most of which disappears as heat. The basement farm will capture around 70 percent of this wasted heat and pipe it into the heating system of the office block above. Oxygen produced by the plants will be sent to office workers via the building's air conditioners.

【1】What does Plantagon plan to do in the basement?

    A.Grow crops.

    B.Do operations.

    C.Open a seed company.

    D.Give lectures about farming.

【2】What does the underlined phrase "the term" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Aeroponics.

    B.Hydroponics.

    C.Monoculture.

    D.Agritechture.

【3】What do indoor farms do with energy waste?

    A.Produce oxygen.

    B.Run air conditioners.

    C.Heat offices.

    D.Create artificial sunlight.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.A farming revolution.

    B.Petterson's achievement.

    C.A water-saving farming project.

    D.An environment-friendly system.

  • 22、When most people think of drones (无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well.

Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones, and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. “We really want to help farming and agriculture. It’s super-important to America and our economy,” Blayde says. “We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the perks is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides (杀虫剂).”

The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determine what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the water runoff. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need - and what they don’t.

However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.

“We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well - and fly low enough that it is not using up all of its power,” she says. “The fields are a couple hundred acres(英亩), so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field.”

Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will help the farmers and the environment.

【1】What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Challenges.

    B.Features.

    C.Benefits.

    D.Solutions.

    A.Spreading proper quantities of pesticides.

B.Helping to determine the chemicals needed.

C.Assisting to monitor the state of crops.

D.Measuring the areas of the fields.

【3】What technical issue of the drone shall be tackled?

    A.Its camera capacity.

    B.Its data collection ability.

    C.Its durability and control.

    D.Its material and efficiency.

【4】What can best describe the students?

    A.Disciplined and realistic.

    B.Experienced and reliable.

    C.Humble and reserved.

    D.Responsible and creative.

The turnaround to shooting bears with a camera, not a gun, puts Mlakars who runs bear observation tours, in step with wider efforts to promote the coexistence ofhumans and bears.

Once on the verge(边缘) ofextinction, Sloverua's brown bear population is booming. As a resuk, encounters(遇见) with bears have increased--not that it seems to worry everyone. "Fortunately we haven't registefed any serious incident over the last years, he added, stressing they were "very active in preventive measures".

In villages close to bear habitats(栖息地), local authorities have replaced regular plastic waste brns, which could be easily opened by hungry bears, with contajners protected by heavy meta! cages.Farmers are entitled to an 80- percent subsidy(补助金) for using electric fences to protect sheep and the loss ofcattle due to bears is compensated(赔偿). If a bear becomes a habitual. visitor to a viliage, special groups step in to relocate the animal with the help oflocal hunters.

Slovenia's approach could throw some light,on the problem in neighbonng lRomania, l:Lome to about 6,000 bears, where tourists to villages in the Carpathian Mountains often post pictures online of bears.waiting to be hand-fed Beyond tourists' "interesting” stories, howeyer, Romarua has seen a "growing number of attacks" by bears, stressed in a conservation plan published laot month that recommends hunting to keep numbers at favorable levels.

Leaming simple rules, such as how to avoid frightening bears and nort feeding tihem is of great importance for reducing conflicts with humans, said Mareike Brix, of German-based EuroNatur foundation. "There is a risk, and there can be problems, but it's also great (to have bears). Wild nature has become so rare in Europe," she said.

  • 24、In 2005, Winston Duncan was travelling with his mother in Southern Africa when he saw an old lady and a young boy walking down a road together. He thought of his own grandmother and wondered how he could help the old lady and others in Africa who have to walk a long way.

Duncan, who lived in Washington State, was 10 at the time, and his solution was to give them bikes. With his mum, he started Wheels to Africa, an organization that for the past 15 years has taken bicycles donated from residents of the Washington area and shipped them across the world to people in need.

Most of the 8,000 bikes they have collected have gone to countries in Africa, helping cut down hours of walking for students and other postmen. But last week, Duncan, travelled with a handful of volunteers and 400 bikes to a destination much closer to his home yet still in need: Puerto Rico. More than a year after it was destroyed by Hurricane Maria, the island suffers from transportation problems.

"It was a little chaotic(混乱的)—as soon as they got their bikes, they were just having fun riding around the parking lot, " said Austin Higgins, a New Jersey resident who recently joined Wheels to Africa as its photographer and videographer. "Some people who received bicycles were almost speechless, and some of them cried, because it was something they had requested for Christmas from Santa Claus, " he said.

The donated bikes included some high-end racing models, which went to teenagers interested in pursuing serious cycling.

Duncan recently graduated from Bard College. He now is in Arlington working at a political consulting firm and encourages kids in the Washington area to get involved with the organization, and some have joined him on trips to Africa and on this trip to Puerto Rico.

" I wanted to try to get people to think about giving back, " he said.
