  • 21、It is necessary to be reasonable and flexible (灵活的) enough to avoid conflicts (冲突) as much as possible and live in peace with others. 【1】 If you have done all your best to avoid conflicts and you are still arguing, then read these below tips on how to avoid conflicts.

Don’t get in the center of the conflict.

Sometimes people can get in the center of conflicts due to their enthusiasm (热心) for offering help. Frankly speaking, it is very unwise, because it can make you the main figure of the conflict. 【2】 You should focus on your own life issues.

    Be kind.

【3】 Life is full of conflicts and disagreements, and that’s why you should find more conservative (保守的) ways of dealing with them. For example, kindness can lessen the conflict.

    Try to be a peacekeeper.

Peacekeepers tend to cooperate with people without bad emotions which usually lead to arguments and even conflicts. “【4】” This saying is the life motto of a natural-born peacekeeper. Don’t worry if you are not a natural-born peacekeeper; you can gain this skill during life.

    【5】

When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way. By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. It is helpful to put some distance between yourself and the opponent (对手). You should get away from the situation for a while.

  • 22、   Promising to be truthful has a real impact on reducing the number of teens who are willing to cheat, according to a new study conducted in India by a research team from the University of Plymouth. The findings, published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, suggest that the desire to be honest goes beyond just a fear of social punishment.

“Promises are what we call “speech acts” and create commitments by merely saying specific words,” said the study’s first author. Dr. Patricia Kanngiesser. “so one would think that they have very little binding power. In contrast, research has shown over and over again that many people do keep their word, even at a personal cost."

Cheating and dishonesty, even on a small scale, can weaken trust and lead to costs for others, and society at large. Cheating in academic settings is a problem worldwide. As of 2018, 20% of the world’s adolescentsabout 250 million individualslived in India and the country’s highly competitive educational system means academic cheating is a concern.

The study involved a series of experiments among 640 adolescents (ages 10 to 14) to test the effectiveness of inviting participants to promise to be truthful, with points that would later be converted into prizes as an encouragement. For example, adolescents played a game in which they mentally chose a location in a box with 16 dice, shook the box and recorded the number of the dice falling in their chosen position.

Prizes were based on their total reported scores after fifteen rounds. Since the initial choice was private, opportunistic ad unobservable switching to a higher scoring dice was possible.

Before the task, the participants were given a choice to promise to be truthful or not. To make promising to be honest more attractive, those who did so received extra points. This gave even potentially dishonest participants a motivation to choose to promise. Control groups of participants could also earn those extra points but did not have to promise.

The researchers were able to evaluate the degree of dishonesty by comparing participants’ reported results to what would be statistically expected. Compared to control groups, promises in the study effectively lowered cheating rates, and the authors conclude that they could be a simple tool to reduce dishonest behavior. “this study provides more evidence of that, and suggests promises could be a powerful way of encouraging and sustaining honest behavior in an academic context.” Kanngiesser said.

1Why was the study conducted in India?

A.Because teens in India have a strong desire to be honest.

B.Because teenagers m India are under great academic pressure.

C.Because teen’s academic cheating is educators' big concern there.

D.Because more and more Indian adolescents don't always keep their word.

2How did the researchers carry out their study?

A.By giving examples and analyzing data.

B.By controlling figures and making classification.

C.By making comparisons and explaining causes.

D.By doing experiments and making comparisons.

3Which of the following statements is true in the experiment with dice?

A.The adolescents were encouraged to promise to be truthful.

B.The effectiveness of promises is not reflected in the experiment.

C.It's impossible for participants to change their original choice of position.

D.The degree of dishonesty in the control group was comparatively lower.

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Honesty is a virtue to be followed.

B.Promises can actually reduce teen cheating.

C.Academic cheating is a worldwide problem.

D.Truthfulness s important lo getting good scores.

  • 23、   In 1982, a man in India set an unusual world record by spending 72 hours in a cage with the country's most poisonous snakes.

That year, Neelim Kumar Khaire made a Guinness world record for staying 72 hours in a glass box with 72 poisonous snakes : 27 monocellate cobras, 24 russell's vipers, 9 binocellate cobras, 8 banded kraits , and 4 common snakes.

Kaire's love for snakes began while he was working at a five-star hotel near Bombay. " Snakes were frequent visitors at my place in Matheran," Khaire said. "I hated killing such beautiful creatures, most of which were harmless. So I started catching and releasing(释放)them in the Sahyadri hills. I once caught a snake and took it to the Haffkin Institute in Bombay. I was told that it was poisonous and too risky to be carried in this way. The happening increased my courage and so began my fascination with snakes.”

Khaire said he first thought of setting up a world record when he came across some reports of Peter Snyemaris staying with 18 poisonous and 6 semi-poisonous snakes in Johannesburg, South Africa, for 50 hours.

“I thought an Indian responsible to create a world record in this field as India is known abroad as a country of snakes,"  said Khaire.

So, for three days, Khaire lived in a small glass box filled with poisonous snakes at B. J. Medical College in Pune, India. While resting in a chair, he often had to deal with snakes that climbed onto him. But after72 hours, Khaire left the box without a single bite.

Using the initial(最初的)funds from his great event, Khaire created The Katraj Snake Park that was later known as The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. This unique park helps nest nearly 160 species of snakes and other wild animals.

【1】What made Khaire brave enough to stay close with poisonous snakes?

    A.A dangerous experience.

    B.Sending snakes to the wild.

    C.Working at a five-star hotel.

    D.Meeting with snakes frequently.

    A.He didn't take it seriously.

B.He should have made it earlier.

C.It should belong to his country.

D.It was unfair to make it in Africa.

【3】Which word best describes the relationship between Khaire and the snakes in the box?

    A.Close

    B.Peaceful.

    C.Terrible.

    D.Comfortable.

【4】What has Khaire's campaign resulted in?

A.Great fame and benefits to him.

B.More difficulty in dealing with snakes.

    C.Less fear of poisonous snakes.

    D.Further protection of wild creatures.

  • 24、Growing up, Deka Ismail says she let labels define what she could be. “I was a black girl, from a refugee (难民) family,” Deka said. “It was as if I was only allowed to explore in this predetermined box.”

After a high school chemistry class inspired her to think about a career in science and gave her confidence in the field, Deka learned to live outside labels and began making big plans for her future. Now she is about to begin her freshman year at the University of California, planning to become a professor.

Bom and raised in San Diego’s City Heights neighbourhood, Deka is the daughter of a Somali refugee couple. While some might say Delta’s success happened in spite of her background, she would say differently, that her experiences shaped her and inspired her to be the driven, young scientist that she is today.

When Deka was eight years old, her mother got a job by studying hard back in school in order to support the whole family. That made Deka realize that education could make a difference to one’s life. She spent a lot of time in the library reading books, and didn’t do many of the things her peers did, like partying or having romantic relationships.

“I always felt like I had to be the perfect girl for my family,” Deka said. “You have to not even do your best but two times better than everyone else. I felt like the whole world was waiting for me to mess up.”

Delta’s efforts paid off. The summer before her senior year of high school, she was accepted to the American Chemical Society Project SEED Programme. “She brought both enthusiasm and focus,” Botham, a researcher at this research institute, recalled. “She arrived every day ready to work, ready to learn and ready to tackle new challenges regardless of whether or not she had done anything similar.”

When asked what advice she would give to others like her, Deka warned them not to underestimate themselves. “Don’t tell yourself that the scholarship is too big or this programme is too competitive or I'll never get into this school,” she said. “I was not sure whether I could make it until I started seeing the acceptance letters rolling in.”
