二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, new research suggests.

In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors.

The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干预) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group.

It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.

Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.

1What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?

    A. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities.

    B. Continue to do their usual activities.

    C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises.

    D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents.

2What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine?

    A. It can contribute to poor sight.

    B. It can damage people’s brain.

    C. It is beneficial to eyesight.

    D. It means low levels of light intensity.

3What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

    A. How to design outdoor activities for kids.

    B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.

    C. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light.

    D. How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.

4Which can serve as the best title for the passage?

    A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better

    B. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside

    C. It’s Time to Engage Kids in Outdoor Activities

    D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness

  • 22、No one can believe that the over 6, 300kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.

The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2, 000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221BC—206BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.

Few local people knew the 3-meterhigh walls made of earth and stones beside them are parts of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human.

The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names are put away as remembrances. The rubbish is spread over the battlements. The brick can be sold 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base.

It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation’s great civilization and learn to love it.

【1】Why does the writer say the Great Wall might disappear?

A.It is useless from now on.

B.It is too old to be used again.

C.It will be replaced by a new one.

D.Some parts of it are being destroyed.

【2】The underlined part “those sections far away from the public eyes” (in Para. 2) refers to the parts of the Great Wall ________.

    A.nobody can watch

B.that are too far to be seen

C.that are too difficult to find

D.that are not well-known to the public

【3】What’s the main reason of the Great Wall being destroyed?

A.The local people sell the bricks for a living.

B.The local people are short of culture knowledge.

C.The local people think that the Great Wall is not important.

D.The local people need bricks and stones to build houses.

【4】Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?

A.How to Protect the Great Wall

B.How the Great Wall Came into Being

    C.The Great Wall Being Rebuilt

D.The Great Wall Being in Danger

  • 23、Nadine McKenzie, a 35-year-old wheelchair dancer in South Africa, has experienced great difficulty since he took up dancing as a hobby. He said that access is the biggest barrier for entering the performing arts. “There are not many companies or training programs for persons with disabilities, especially in the dance field,” McKenzie said. “I’ve had quite a few experiences where you’d be in a class with different people and some trainers would not know what to do with us, and so for those reasons, they don’t open these spaces to different artists.”

Beyond lack of access, McKenzie, who’s been dancing for 15 years, said inclusion(认同) is another barrier for people with disabilities. “There are very few people especially in South Africa that actually have projects where they involve dancers with disabilities,” he added. “It's something that’s still very difficult, but it’s slowly starting to change.”

Seeing a gap in the industry, McKenzie founded Unmute with his friends in 2013, a dance company in Cape Town that enlists young South Africans with disabilities to get involved in the arts. “It's been extremely rewarding in the sense that we’ve been able to create more platforms for artists to train and perform, and also expose more young people,” he said. McKenzie believes Unmute is helping break down some of these barriers through awareness campaigns not just for people with disabilities to sign up, but also for able-bodied people to learn how to work with them.

Gerard Samuel, a professor at the University of Cape Town told CNN that though there has been some progress in both access and inclusion within dance, there is still much work to be done. “Barriers include mindsets of limitation and inability of disabled persons,” he said. All this still need to change. He believes that education, investment and more representation in the media would help encourage more accessibility and inclusion.

【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A.Inclusion is the biggest barrier for dancers with disabilities.

B.It's challenging for disabled people to get involved in dance.

C.Nadine McKenzie began to dance when he was 15 years old.

【2】Which word can best describe McKenzie?

    A.Cold-hearted

    B.Humorous

    C.Stubborn

    D.Caring

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Unmute benefited both people with disabilities and able-bodied ones.

B.McKenzie founded a dance company all by himself.

C.Little progress in both access and inclusion has been made.

D.Unmute only created platforms for artists to train and perform.

【4】According to Gerard Samuel, ______can help encourage accessibility and inclusion.

    A.education and investment

    B.mindsets of limitation

    C.less representation in the media

    D.inability of disabled persons.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

There was once a king who often thought, “Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” One day, he had an idea.

Early one morning, the king disguised himself and went to a local village. He placed a largest one in the middle of the main street with gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.

The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, pilling the milk everywhere, “What fool put this stone here?” he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.

Then a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone away.

The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone with nobody making an attempt to move it. The king was in despair. “does no one in this village feel any responsibility to keep their neighbours from harm?”

Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She was the daughter of a local farmer. She had been working all day and was very tired. But when she saw the stone, she said to herself, “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the street after dark. I’ll move it out of the way.”

After a great deal of effort, the girl pushed the stone with all her might. Imagine her surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been! The king then stepped out from behind the tree.

“Oh sir,” the girl said, “does this gold belong to you? If not, we surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it.

The king said, “My dear, the gold is mine. I put it in the road and moved the stone over it. Now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has learnt the lesson I wanted to teach my people.”
