二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The veggie burger(素食汉堡): this simple non-meat burger is a main meal for a vegetarian. So what is a veggie burger? A veggie burger is similar to an ordinary hamburger, except that it is meat-free, commonly made from ingredients such as beans, tofu, nuts, grains and mushrooms. In many cases, the differences between the meat hamburger and veggie burger are clear, but Impossible Foods Company plans to put an end to that. The Impossible burger is made of a plant-based product that looks like blood. It clearly looks, smells and even bleeds like meat, but it’s grown in a lab. The Impossible says this burger is hard to tell from real meat, about 47% similar, according to a test conducted among meat lovers.

The plant-based burger receives increasing attention from the public. Marketing is one good reason: plant-based meat products attract meat-lovers and vegetarians alike due to their health benefits. If you can have the food you love at a lower health cost, why wouldn’t you?

Another reason why many people resist meat product is that they may seek to reduce animal suffering or the meat industry’s large environmental impact. Meat production is responsible for 18% of total greenhouse gases, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). However, they may still miss the taste of meat.

Finally, “there are associated feelings and memories that go with certain foods,” says Thomas Banks, BBC Learning English producer and 15-year vegetarian. “I didn’t grow up a vegetarian and sometimes I miss my family’s cooking. Plant-based meat allows me to have a good home-cooked meal that’s just like mum used to make.”

It is reported that the global meat substitute market was valued at $4,512.1 million in 2019, and is predicted to reach $8,823.6 million by 2027, showing an annual growth rate of 7.2% from 2021 to 2027. According to recent studies, 30% of Americans are not only leaving meat off their plates but also seeking out more plant-based meat substitutes.

【1】What does Impossible Foods Company intend to do?

A.To make veggie burger look like meat hamburger.

B.To distract people’s interest in meat hamburger.

C.To expand the numbers of veggie burger lovers.

D.To persuade more people to have less meat hamburger.

【2】Why do many people become vegetarians?

A.They don’t favor the taste of meat.

B.They want to do some good to animal welfare.

    C.They oppose the environmental sustainability.

D.They want to meet the need of their financial benefits.

【3】What can we know from the text?

A.FAO is the pioneer for the meatless industry.

B.The plant-based meat can be grown in every household garden.

C.Livestock production is responsible for 80% of total greenhouse gases.

D.Vegetarians can get meat-like food experiences from the plant-based meat.

【4】How does the author support his statements in the last paragraph?

    A.By listing various reasons.

    B.By giving a definition.

    C.By presenting statistics.

    D.By analyzing strengths and weaknesses.

  • 22、   From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold.

Why can’t we stop the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh

Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold.

However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body.

To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3.

Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives without the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.”

Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.

1What does Peter Barlow think is the main problem for prevention of the common cold?

A.The slow mutation of some genes.

B.The fast speed at which rhinoviruses spread.

C.The wide variety of cold viruses created by rhinoviruses.

D.The harm rhinoviruses do to the immune system.

2What can we learn about the protein needed by the viruses?

A.It allows the viruses to mutate easily.

B.It helps the viruses replicate inside our bodies.

C.It helps the viruses become resistant to drugs.

D.It accelerates the speed at which the viruses spread.

3What did the researchers discover in their gene-editing study?

A.The modified cells seemed to protect the mice against viral infections.

B.Genetically modified mice died because they lacked the protein.

C.More methyltransferase SETD3 was produced after the cells were modified.

D.The gene-editing technique was more effective against enteroviruses than rhinoviruses.

4What do the researchers most probably do next, according to Carette?

A.Conduct experiments on genetically modified humans.

B.Apply this gene-editing technique to control other viruses.

C.Identify a drug that can help reduce the protein.

D.Find a chemical that can cure all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses.

  • 23、   Pets in dozens of towns across the nation are more likely to live through a fire because of the efforts of a young girl.

Encouraged two years ago by a news report of a dog that survived a fire because of a special oxygen mask for pets, Monica Plumb made research and then raised money so the five firetrucks in her area could carry similar equipment. Once she had made it, she continued begging donations — using her website and collection cans, giving speeches, whatever it took. So far, she has supplied nearly 300 fire stations with the pet-saving equipment.

Firefighters regularly made efforts to save animals, even to the point of doing mouth-to-nose breathing, using human oxygen masks, or creating masks from cups and oxygen pipes, to try to save them. But none are successful in sending oxygen, and the efforts often fail. The pets’ best chance of living is receiving oxygen through a specially made mask, but most fire departments cannot spend money on equipment that won’t be used to save human lives.

With time going by, animal lovers, and many animal welfare (福利) groups are taking action.

Massachusetts veterinarians have donated kits to about 50 fire departments throughout the state; Invisible Fence has donated more than 5,100 kits to stations across the US. “That was early in the awareness curve,” says Best Friends Pet Care’s Deb Bennett. “We had to educate and persuade many fire chiefs about the value of the masks.”

Young Monica Plumb, who plans to become a veterinarian (兽医), had no idea her campaign would go this far. She thinks donors, who give $1, $5 or $20 to her efforts, do so because they understand that they’re helping pets, they’re helping their families and they’re helping the firefighters”.

1What sort of girl is Monica Plumb?

A.Cooperative and energetic. B.Loving and determined.

C.Patient and ambitious. D.Honest and devoted.

2How can oxygen be sent to animals successfully?

A.Using masks made from cups and pipes. B.Using specially-designed pet masks.

    C.Doing mouth-to-nose breathing. D.Using human oxygen masks.

3What can be inferred from Deb Bennett’s words?

A.Many animal welfare groups have been set up.

B.More fire chiefs are willing to pay for pet masks.

C.Importance of pet masks hasn’t been realized by all.

D.Great achievements have been made to save animals.

4What does the underlined phrase “her campaign” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Raising money to save injured animals.

B.Providing pet masks for fire departments.

C.Educating people to protect wild animals.

D.Setting up a fund to support firefighters.

  • 24、Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest thinkers in the world, began his career as an artist. Very little is known about Leonardo’s early life. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci. As a boy, Leonardo showed a great interest in drawing, sculpting and observing nature.

However, because Leonardo was born to parents who were not married to each other, he was barred from some studies and professions. He trained as an artist after moving to Florence with his father in the 1460s. It was an exciting time to be in Florence, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. Leonardo trained with one of the city’s very successful artists, Andrea del Verrocchio. He was a painter, sculptor and gold worker. Verrocchio told his students that they needed to understand the body’s bones and muscles when drawing people.

Leonardo took the teacher’s advice very seriously. He spent several periods of his life studying the human body by taking apart and examining dead bodies. While training as an artist, Leonardo also learned about and improved on relatively new painting methods at the time. One was the use of perspective(透视) to show depth. A method called “sfumato” helped to create a cloudy effect to suggest distance. “Chiaroscuro” is a method using light and shade as a painterly effect.

Leonardo’s first known portrait now hangs in the National Gallery in Washington, D. C. He made this painting of a young woman named Ginevra de’ Benci around 1474. The woman has a pale face with dark hair. In the distance, Leonardo painted the Italian countryside.

He soon received attention for his extraordinary artistic skills. Around 1475 he was asked to draw an angel in Verrocchio’s painting “Baptism of Christ.” One story says that when Verrocchio saw Leonardo’s addition to the painting, he was so amazed by his student’s skill that he said he would never paint again.

1Which of the following words can be used to describe Leonardo according to the third paragraph?

    A. Stubborn.   B. Creative.

    C. Pessimistic.   D. Determined.

2What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Verrocchio felt shame at his own work.

    B. Verrocchio thought Leonardo’s work terrible.

    C. Verrocchio thought highly of Leonardo’s work.

    D. Verrocchio didn’t believe Leonardo could paint well.

3Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Leonardo was prevented from some studies because of his parents.

    B. Leonardo thought his teacher’s advice was unreasonable.

    C. “Sfumato” is a method to show depth by using light and shade.

    D. “Baptism of Christ” made Leonardo known across the world.
