二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、According to data, there are under 100,000 people entering Canada every year to work for limited periods of time. Generally speaking, these people have professions where there is a shortage of skilled workers in Canada. There are opportunities for holidaymakers to enrich their travel experiences through paid work.

A work permit is a non-immigration permit. It is for the purpose of working in Canada for a set period of time. To qualify for a work permit in Canada, you must have a valid offer of employment from a Canadian company or employer. That offer must be admitted by the Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). The employer will have to meet all the conditions given by the government. Besides, the work that you will carry out will not be disadvantaging similarly qualified Canadian workers.

To get a work permit, you must convince a Canadian immigration officer that you intend to be in Canada only for the duration of your employment. Depending on the type of work and the length of stay that you intend to do in Canada, you may be asked to attend an interview to discuss the matter further and you may also be asked to complete a medical examination. What’s more, you are responsible for these costs. When your work permit expires (到期), you should return to your homeland. You cannot get a work permit if you go travelling in Canada.

One thing to bear in mind is that although you have received a work permit, you may still be refused entry into Canada by Port of Entry officials. You may need to clarify to them your purposes of visiting Canada. Once you arrive in Canada you will need a Social Insurance Number (SIN), which is a requirement for working in Canada. You can request a Social Insurance Number application form at the Port of Entry when you arrive in Canada or from the HRDC later. Once you have filled out this form, you will receive your SIN later by post. And you can give it to your employer before you work in his or her company.

【1】What is needed to get a work permit in Canada?

    A.Personal information.

    B.A recommendation letter.

    C.Valid immigration papers.

    D.A legal offer of work.

【2】What will you have to do after your work permit expires?

    A.Leave Canada.

    B.Find another job.

    C.Ask for a travel permit.

D.Apply for a new work permit.

【3】What do we know about SIN in the text?

A.All visitors to Canada need it.

B.It’s as important as a work permit.

C.Employers will help you get it.

D.You should get it before arriving in Canada.

【4】What is this text mainly about?

A.Advice for foreign workers in Canada.

B.Travel tips for tourists to Canada.

    C.Work regulations in Canadian companies.

    D.Tips for immigrants in Canada.

  • 22、   However exiting space travel sounds, astronauts must still suffer with bad food. Now, food in space has to be dehydrated (使脱水) or pre - cooked and stored. This means astronauts aren't really eating fresh food.

New technology may change this. Scientific American reports that a specially - designed oven will be sent into space this autumn with NASA's NG -12 cargo (货物) mission. Far from the common vacuum-packed (真空包装的) meals, astronauts may get to enjoy freshly baked cookies.

Why aren't they baking cookies in space already?

For one thing, there's the risk of a fire. Engineers also have to overcome the challenge of microgravity, which prevents heat from circling inside ovens the same way it does on Earth. Astronauts will still have to wait a while before they can have their cookies, though. After baking, the results will be sent back to Earth for safety testing. If successful, this will be the first oven to bake food in space. “I believe.... that will be game changing for both science and astronauts,” food technology researcher Maeena Naman Shafiee told Scientific American.

One of the main driving forces behind this project has been NASA's 2018 research into the effects of “confinement (封闭) and isolation (隔离)”. Unlike on the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts traveling out of Earth's orbit (轨道) may not be able to speak to their loved ones on future missions, which could lead to negative feelings.

It's hoped that the chance to bake and sense familiar smells can bring joy to crews (宇航人员). “Is the ISS going to smell like fresh-baked cookies? We don't know.” said NanoRacks' communications manager Abby Dickes. “But that's a feeling we all know and love . . . that will make someone feel at home.”

Baking cookies in space would mark an important step, offering a small comfort in the difficult and unfamiliar environment of space travel. Astronauts have already grown plants aboard the ISS.

With commercial (商业的) space travel now being planned, who knows what other developments may surprise us in the future?

【1】What can the new technology help astronauts to do in space?

    A.Store more food.

    B.Enjoy fresh cookies.

    C.Quickly prepare food.

    D.Keep food from going bad.

【2】Why is it difficult to bake cookies in space?

A.It's difficult and costly to send food into space.

B.Microgravity stops food from staying in one place.

C.Baking cookies in space would pollute the spaceships.

D.It is hard to heat food properly because of microgravity.

【3】What can we infer from Abby Dickes' words?

A.Astronauts on the ISS suffer a lot.

B.The ISS will be made cookie shaped.

C.The effort of making freshly baked cookies in space is necessary.

D.The astronauts on the ISS took a bite of the cookies made in space.

【4】What was the main purpose of the cookie project?

    A.To improve astronauts' health.

B.To make improvements in space travel.

C.To encourage more people to travel to space.

D.To make space travel more comfortable for astronauts.

  • 23、   If what we did were simply work to live, the reality of our everyday existence would be equivalent to that of stone age man. All of human achievement that makes modern life possible has happened because of the time that has been freed up from the work of everyday survival.

For most of the human species on earth man and woman have been occupied with the simple business of staying alive in as much relative comfort as possible.

Hunting and gathering, finding or building shelter, defending the little that one has from plunder(抢夺), surviving long enough to have offsprings of a mature enough age to contribute to the welfare of the group—this was initially the main business of living.

It has only been comparatively recently, since the agricultural and industrial revolutions that used emerging technologies to free human beings from the drudgery of day-to-day survival, that time has become available to do other than simply survive.

However, living to work is a luxury that we should not take for granted, for even now still most of the human race couldn’t be blessed with the pearl.

When we live to work we enjoy what we are doing, otherwise we wouldn’t be doing it. The term “live to work” implies choice. Working to live denotes the exact opposite: anything will do that pays the bills. Anyone in the latter situation will attest to the undesirability of being in such a position. Living to work suggests exhilaration in one’s calling; it summons images of freedom and excitement in the prospect of what each new day will bring, whereas working to live suggests little choice if any. “What do you want to do when you grow up?” is a question with which most children will be familiar, perhaps even bored. It is a question of what even a young adult can often not be sure of until they have had experiences of many different jobs, or at least the ones they thought to try. But to be forced to work at a task that one does not enjoy day after day for survival would be last choice on anyone’s list. Enlightened humanity, while acknowledging that some undesirable jobs must be done regardless, would acknowledge that if one was motivated in his work, the work would be so much better accomplished.

1The underlined word drudgery is closest in meaning to ______.

    A.imagination B.hard labor

    C.dragging D.familiarity

2It is implied in the text that human beings ______.

A.have been satisfied by contributing to the welfare of the group.

B.stayed alive in much possible comfort for centuries

C.made little progress before the emergence of technologies

D.were addicted to hunting, gathering and building shelters.

3Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Human achievements facilitating modern life are done during the leisure time freed from survival work.

B.The major early business of humans is to seek chances for technological developments.

C.In modern society, most people have enough comforts to make individual choices for work.

D.Most adults can answer confidently questions concerning what jobs they want to do.

4The best title for the passage would be ______.

A.Technology, a driving force to push humans ahead

B.Working to live, a basic condition for pleasant living to work

C.Different desires and prospects people have for different kinds of work.

D.Working to live or living to work, a choice distinguishing joy from suffering

  • 24、“I love China,” declared Boris Johnson, then mayor of London, in 2013, encouraging British children, his own included, to study Chinese. Seven years on, the popularity of studying Chinese seems to be fading in England.

Well-to-do parents saw Chinese as a good investment in their children’s future. In 2015 Hatching Dragons, Britain’s first bilingual English-Chinese nursery, opened its doors to 32 little learners; it has since taught over 500 children, for around £1,881 a month per child.

But Cennydd John, the nursery’s chief executive, feels sorry that there is “almost no option” for children to continue their bilingual education once they leave at the age of five. Fewer than 3% of primary schools in England offer Chinese.

Many independent schools followed the fashion: 24% of them offer Chinese, compared with 4.4% in state schools. But finding a school that offers Chinese is no longer the priority it was for parents three years ago, says Ralph Lucas, editor in chief of The Good Schools Guide. Part of the reason is that “the perception of China as a place where you would want your child to make a career has taken a severe knock”. Learning Chinese to a useful level is difficult.

That shift shows up in exam figures. In 2015, 3,099 students took a Chinese A-level. In 2019 those figures had dropped to 2,272 for A-level, according to the Joint Council for Qualifications.

Advocates of learning Chinese say that a more complex situation is exactly why children should be practicing their tones. But those who have invested the hours (and the cash) don’t always reap the rewards. “The only real advantage of me speaking Chinese was having a much better understanding of how difficult it was for my Chinese colleagues to operate in English,” says Alex Wilson, who worked in public relations in Beijing and Shanghai.

【1】Why does the author mention Boris Johnson in the first paragraph?

A.To show Boris Johnson’s love for Chinese.

B.To show the popularity of studying Chinese in England.

C.To introduce the topic and attract readers’ attention.

D.To introduce the bilingual English-Chinese nursery in England.

【2】Which of the following is NOT a reason why the popularity of studying Chinese is fading in England?

A.There are not enough primary schools in England offering Chinese lessons.

B.Learning Chinese to a useful level is not easy for the learners in England.

C.The number of the students taking Chinese A-level exams dropped sharply.

D.The idea of letting children start a career in China become less popular.

【3】Which can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Learning English or Chinese?

B.Is learning Chinese out of fashion?

    C.Why is learning Chinese difficult?

    D.Is learning Chinese worthwhile?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A rock as big as a house. That’s how the guide-book described Giant Rock. Dad said it was carried here by a glacier (冰川) millions of years ago.

I was finally going to see it, on snowshoes, with my cousin Andrew, my dad, and my uncle Don. I’d been snowshoeing before, and I liked traveling through deep snow alongside wild animal tracks (足迹).

At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. “We start here,” Dad said, “on the red trail (小路). Then we turn left onto the purple trail. That’s where Giant Rock is.”

“Remember to stick together, boys,” Uncle Don said.

The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were stuck onto the trees. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. Dad and everyone else were in front and I was in the back. My cousin was faster than I was, but I managed to catch up.

The late afternoon sun felt warm, although it was going down. I saw lots of animal tracks — mostly rabbit prints. As we carried on up the trail. Andrew said what I’d been thinking, “Will we ever reach Giant Rock?  Do you think your dad invented the idea of Giant Rock just to get us away from the TV for a while?”

    I laughed. “You never know.”

Finally, we reached the top of a hill and saw the large rock sitting alone in the forest.

“It really is as big as a house!” Andrew said.

Standing in the rock’s long shadow (影子), I noticed the sun had got even lower.

“Let’s head back,” Dad said after a few minutes.

Soon we were on our way home. I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animal tracks. They were hard to see among the snowshoe prints, so I followed them off the trail for a closer look. They looked like tiny handprints and footprints. Must be a raccoon (浣熊) I thought, matching them to prints in my guide.
