21、 When the company was small, Google cared a lot about getting kids from Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. But Laszlo Bock, Google’s former Senior Vice President of People Operations, said it was the "wrong" hiring strategy. Experience has taught him that there are exceptional kids at many other places, from state schools in California to those in New York. "What we find is that the best people from places like these are just as good if not better as anybody you can get from any Ivy League school," said Bock, who authored a book titled "Work Rules!".
So what else does Google not care about:
Grades: Google’s data shows that grades predict performance for the first two years of a career, but do not matter after that.
Brain-teasers: Gone are interview questions such as: Why are manhole covers (井盖) round? How many golf balls can fit in a school bus? "Our research tells us those questions are a waste of time," Bock said. "They’re a really coachable skill. The more you practice, the better you get at it."
Here’s what Google does care about:
Problem solvers: Your cognitive (认知的) ability, or how well you solve problems.
Leaders: The idea is not whether you were president of the student body or vice president of a bank, but rather "When you see a problem, do you step in and help solve it?" and then critically, "Are you willing to let somebody else take over, and make room for somebody else? Are you willing to give up power?"
Googleyness: That’s what Google calls its cultural fit. It’s not "Are you like us?" Bock said. "We actually look for people who are different, because diversity gives us great ideas."
"What’s most important is that people are intellectually humble, willing to admit when they’re wrong, and care about the environment around them ...because we want people who think like owners not employees," Bock said.

22、 I come from a broken family. After we grew up, my sister and I could go years without speaking. And that is where this story begins.
My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months apart, but by the time we were teenagers we had lost touch. By age 19, I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’ s horse farm in Virginia. Jeanne got married at 18, moved to Chicago, and I didn’ t know what. We lived separate lives in separate states, and our connection somehow ended.
Fast - forward about five years. I was 24 and on a trip with my fiancé (未婚夫) to New York City,a place I had never been. During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very busy street loaded with people. Everyone was in a hurry. I had laughed at something my fiancé said, and I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me: “ Cheryl! ” I froze in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears welled up in my eyes. I knew without a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled back before even turning to look. “ Jeanne? ”
It was her. I began pushing people out of my way to get to her. The crowd started to part—even by New York standards, we must have seemed crazy. And there we were, standing in the middle of a Manhattan street, facing each other and smiling. I couldn’ t believe it.
I later asked how she’ d known it was me—she never saw me! She said it was my laugh. I wouldn’ tsay my laugh is all that unusual, but I guess to a family member it’ s infectious(有感染力的) . It hits your heart and goes deep in your mind.
Since that time, my sister and I have never been separated. We both moved back to Wisconsin. Wetalk daily. Many years have passed, and we are now in our 50s. I truly believe God played a huge part in bringing us together. But our meeting by chance wasn’ t just a sign. I see it as more of a lesson, a reminder not to lose touch with loved ones. 23、David Brown is known as the world’s fastest completely blind runner. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.
Brown says he was living in fear for a number of years until he discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he earned the ticket for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. It was at that time that he knew he wanted to compete himself.
Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10. 99 in the men’s 100-meter dash to take home the gold. Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over time. He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured because he couldn’t see the ball coming. “I took the opportunity to run on the playground, and realized I had some speed there,” he says.
He pursued his passion at the Missouri School for the Blind. Brown started at the school when he was 11, and it was there that he really started running track.
He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running. Brown was one of the 25 winners of an essay contest that got to attend the event in Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome obstacles, noting that a he grew up he struggled with depression. It’s important to be in sync with your running partner. His new partner Steward says he doesn’t have to slow down when running with Brown, because he’s fast. A 10- or 11-second race doesn’t require much speaking, Steward says. “It’s also an honor,”Brown says. 24、On 4 May, Headley Court, a former military (军事) site in Surrey, England, was transformed into the Seacole Center — a temporary hospital for people recovering from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus. It is named after the nurse Mary Seacole in recognition of her contribution to medicine.
Seacole was born in Jamaica (牙买加) in 1805. Her mother ran a hotel where people could receive medical care and Seacole learnt a lot about nursing from her. An eager traveler, Seacole learnt more about new medicines and treatments as she journeyed across the world.
During the Crimean War (1853-1856) , Seacole wanted to join a group of nurses, led by Florence Nightingale, who were going to Crimea to treat British soldiers. The Crimean War was an international conflict fought between Britain, France and Turkey on one side, and Russia on the other. However, Seacole’s request to join was rejected. She believed this was possibly because of racism (种族主义) which is when people are treated badly or unfairly because of their race.
Instead, Seacole went to Crimea by herself and set up the British Hotel, which was a place where soldiers could go to receive treatment. Among these soldiers she became known as “Mother Seacole” because of how well she looked after them.
After the war, Seacole fell ill and didn’t have much money. To assist her, people put on a festival in her honor in 1857. Seacole also published a book about her life, called Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands, before she died in 1881 in London.
