二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of“A Dog’s Way Home’“, has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill (垃圾填埋场), rooting through garbage for her next meal.

Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the garbage dump.“I knelt down and just said,’Oh, come here, baby,”said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.

Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to dog trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was smiling happily,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.

Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments“an amazing dog, perfect performance!”

Shelby has come a long way from the garbage dump. But Buhler said when she saw Shelby recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same, with the same big grin on her face.” Buhler said.

【1】Why is an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A.To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.

B.To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.

C.To introduce a dog’s similar but even more unusual experience.

D.To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.

【2】What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film?

    A.Her adoption picture.

    B.Her personality and ability.

    C.Her happy smile.

    D.Her miserable experiences.

【3】What does Buhler mean by saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph?

A.The dog looked exactly the same as before.

B.The dog was really excited to live such a happy life.

C.The dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it.

D.The dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her nature.

【4】Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?

A.The Trainer and Her Star Dog

    B.Shelby’s Hard-luck Story

C.From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star

    D.The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”

  • 22、Clara Daly was seated on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when a flight attendant asked an urgent question over the loudspeaker: Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?” She knew she needed to help.

Clara, 15 at the time, pressed the call button. The flight attendant came by and explained the situation. “We have a passenger on the plane who's blind and deaf,” she said. The passenger seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the flight attendants couldn't understand what he needed, according to PEOPLE magazine.

Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help with her, dyslexia and knew she'd be able to spell on the man's palm by finger. So she unbuckled her seat belt, walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt by the aisle seat of Tim Cook, then 64. Gently taking his hand, she signed, “How are you? Are you OK?” Cook asked for some water. When it arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.

“He didn't need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk,” Clara said. So for the next hour, that was what they did. She talked about her family and her plans for the future (she wants to be a politician). Cook told Clara how he had gradually become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman. Even though he couldn't see her, she “looked attentively at his face with such kindness”, a passenger reported.

“Clara was amazing,” a flight attendant told Alaska Airlines in a blog interview. “You could tell Cook was very excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such a warm-hearted girl.” Cook's reaction: “Best trip I've ever had.”

  • 23、   New research has found that young adults who smoke both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes appear to have a higher risk of stroke than those who only smoke tobacco.

Carried out by researchers at George Mason University, the new study looked at 161,529 participants aged 18 to 44 years of age, who were surveyed about their cigarette and e-cigarette use.

The researchers also calculated the participants’ risk of experiencing a stroke, taking into account factors such as how much participants smoked, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol levels, body mass index and physical activity levels.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed that the participants who smoked cigarettes and used e-cigarettes were nearly two times more likely to have a stroke compared to current cigarette — only smokers, and nearly three times more likely than non-smokers.

The team also found that participants who used only e-cigarettes had a lower risk of stroke than those who smoked only tobacco cigarettes. In fact, those who used e-cigarettes on their own did not have a significantly greater risk of stroke than non-smokers.

However, the researchers failed to find any clear benefit from switching from cigarette smoking to using e-cigarettes, even though many people believe that e-cigarettes are a “healthy” alternative to cigarettes, and a way to help smokers kick the habit. They also noted that the nicotine dependence and toxicity associated with e-cigarettes is worrying, particularly among young adults who smoke them for fun and the range of flavors.

“It’s long been known that smoking cigarettes is among the most significant risk factors for stroke. Our study shows that young smokers who also use e-cigarettes put themselves at an even greater risk,” explained lead investigator Tarang Parekh, MBBS, MSc. “This is an important message for young smokers who perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful ones and consider them a safer alternative. We have begun understanding the health impact of e-cigarettes and concomitant cigarette smoking, and it’s not good.”

“Our findings demonstrate an additive harmful effect of e-cigarettes on smokers’ blood vessels, hearts and brains,” explained Parekh.

“Consider this study as a wake-up call for young vapers, clinicians, and healthcare policymakers. There is an urgency to regulate such products to avoid economic and population heath consequences and a critical need to conduct further research on the benefits and risks of smoking cessation altermatives,” warned Parekh.

1What does the text belong to?

A.A science fiction. B.A news report.

C.A short story. D.A public announcement.

2What can we know about the participants?

A.A few elderly people were surveyed.

B.Some of them are non smokers .

C.All of them use cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

D.They have a lower risk of stroke than others .

3What does the underlined word “perceive” in Paragraph 7 mean?

    A.Think. B.Practise.

    C.Predict. D.Receive.

4What did the the new research find?

A.Smoking cigarettes is among the most significant risk factors for stroke.

B.E-cigarettes are a “healthy” alternative to cigarettes.

C.Smoking both tobacco and e-cigarettes can make young adults at an greater risk of stroke.

D.It is beneficial to switch from cigarette smoking to using e-cigarettes.

  • 24、The icebreaker Polarstern was frozen in sea ice, for nearly a year. On board were about a hundred scientists and crew members who were braving the polar winter to study climate change in the Arctic. I was there too, photographing the first leg of the MOSAiC expedition. It was the longest and largest Arctic expedition (探险) in history and, for me, a gift from the universe.

Four years earlier I’d fallen ill because of the ice and cold on my first Aretic assignment. When I returned home, I vowed to devote my photography to the fragile polar environment that had attracted me. Shortly afterward I heard about MOSAiC and knew I had to go.

By the time the Polarstern set sail from Tromso, Norway, on September 20, 2019, I’d been on nine other polar expeditions. MOSAiC was different. For one thing, the first few legs took place during the long polar night. For another, help was very far away.

We arrived at the ice floe (浮冰) on October 4, one of the last days the sun rose above the horizon. Very soon the days passed in darkness.

Photographing was difficult. Wind and blowing snow made it hard to see through the camera’s view-finder. My hands became painfully cold. Many times I saw a beautiful moment but couldn’t capture it because my hands weren’t working.

The darkness also held terrors, which for me meant polar bears. As a polar bear guard on the ice, I stood alone with my rifle (步枪) outside a tent. There was too much wind, snow and darkness to see anything, even an eight-foot-tall polar bear.

On December 13 we saw a ship on the horizon coming to drop off the next team and pick us up. The return to Tromse took 16 days. About a week after my return I was in Washington, D. C. for National Geographic’s Storytellers Summit. As I walked through the city streets one morning, I had a sudden realization: I could’t fall through the ice into the ocean here. I didn’t have to scan the horizon for polar bears. I was safe. In that moment I understood how vigilant (警觉的) I’d become and how much fear I had felt. And yet, I missed the darkness so much.

【1】Why is the Arctic expedition a gift from the universe for the author?

A.It gave him an unforgettable experience.

B.It enabled him to study climate change in the Arctic.

C.It helped him practise his photographic skills in the Arctic.

D.It allowed him to shoot a polar bear with the gun.

【2】Why was the author determined to join the MOSAiC expedition?

A.He had heard about MOSAiC before.

B.He hadn’t been to the Arctic for a long time.

C.He had once fallen under the ice in the Arctic.

D.He wanted to devote himself to taking photos of the Arctic.

【3】What does the author say about his experience in the Arctic?

A.A polar bear broke into his tent.

B.Beautiful moments couldn’t be captured at all.

C.He was the last to see the sun rise above the horizon.

D.His photographing was affected by extreme weather.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The author was sensitive to everything in his daily life.

B.The author was likely to go Arctic expedition again.

C.The author arrived in Washington D. C. on December 29.

D.The author attended the Summit after his first Arctic assignment.
