21、My daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮) pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home.
A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.”
Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she did in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled.
What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person.
Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer.
We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time.
My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea.

22、You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans — between 4.8 and 12.7 million ones enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures (雕像) out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws (吸管) collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic”, Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (倾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.

A.Beautifying the city he lives in.
B.Introducing eco-friendly products.

B.Calming.
C.Puzzling
D.Amazing
【4】Which word can best describe Von Wong?
A.Frank.
B.Honest.
C.Easy-going.
D.Environmentally-friendly.
【5】What can we learn from the passage?
A.A majority of global plastic waste is recycled
B.Plastic straws are the biggest source of plastic pollution.

D.Recycling all the plastic waste requires our joint efforts.
23、Most Incredible Stadiums (体育馆) in North America
If you are a big fan of massive stadiums and are unaware of where these beautiful stadiums are located, here is a list of four largest stadiums in North America.
Michigan Stadium
Would you be surprised to know that the second largest stadium in the world is a college football stadium? That’s right. Michigan Stadium, home of the University of Michigan Wolverines, is the largest stadium in the United States and the second-largest stadium in the world. It has a capacity of 107,601. When you see Michigan Stadium, you know you’re talking about college football.
Olympic Stadium
Located in north Canada, this stadium was used for the Montreal Expos, but now is carefully used for soccer games. In fact, it’s set to host some World Cup games in 2026, but anybody who’s been inside can tell you it’s not a stadium fit to host such a big event.
Estadio Azteca
Maybe it’s not the nicest, but it is a must-visit stadium in Mexico. Lying in the suburbs of Mexico City, it is the stadium that hosts the national soccer game in Mexico. When the 1970 World Cup was there, it hosted 10 matches, including the semi-final, and the final between Brazil and Italy. Estadıo Azteca is the largest stadium in Mexico, with a capacity of 87,523.
Madison Square Garden
Madison Square Garden is one of the best stadiums in North America, and not just for sports, but for concerts and other events as well. If you are traveling into New York City by train, you will see the stadium right as you enter the city, above the train station. Before you get to your seats, the outskirts of the stadium actually look like a high-end hotel. It won’t disappoint you.

24、 A teacher in the US asked students to finish the sentence: “ I wish my teacher knew...” However, we have recently asked teachers what they wish their students knew.
Jackie Schneider, music teacher, London
I wish my students knew that education is not a competitive sport. No child is a number. Levels tell you more about the school than the child. In the same way, some kids take longer to learn to walk and talk and some take longer to learn literacy and numeracy skills, which does not matter. Every child has the potential to be gifted and talented. I wish they knew that reading could bring them more joy than they could ever imagine and that their singing voice is beautiful.
Avais Qureshi, citizenship teacher, London
I wish they knew that life is about so much more than who approves of you and who doesn’t. A lot of kids are too hung-up on peer groups. I wish they knew that this time doesn’t return: they need to focus on their top tasks and getting the grades they need.
Nandia Helal, Langdon Academy, London
I wish my students knew how hard we work. I have them on my mind for 12-15 hours a day. If I’m out on the weekend, there’s always a sense of guilt----like I should be marking or planning lessons for the upcoming week. I never feel like I’m doing enough for their education.
Geoff Barton, head teacher, King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmunds
I wish my students knew that while school and qualifications matter a lot, they are merely doors into our future: the really important things in our lives, and the people who will mean most to us, all lie ahead. Students should seize every opportunity now, in and beyond the classroom, to develop the skill, qualities and knowledge ready for the adventures that lie ahead.

26、阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Holland is a country where much of the land lies below sea level. Only great walls called dikes keep the North Sea from rushing in and flooding the land. Once there lived in Holland a boy named Peter. One lovely autumn afternoon, when Peter was eight, he wanted to take some hot cakes to his blind friend. Off he went with a light heart. He stayed with his friend a little while, telling him about his walk along the dike, about the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's words that he should return before dark, so he set out for home.
As he walked along, he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty flowers that grew beside the road. Suddenly he noticed that the sun was setting. “Mother will be worried about me,” he thought, and he began to run toward home. Just then he heard a noise. He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike.
Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and stuck his finger in the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed for help. But no one heard him. It grew still colder, and his arm ached, and began to grow numb. He shouted again. “Will no one come? Mother! Mother!”
But his mother had looked anxiously along the dike road many times since sunset, and now she had closed the door, thinking that Peter was spending the whole night with his blind friend, and that she would punish him in the morning for staying away from home without permission.
