  • 21、Sleep and Teens--Biology and Behavior

How much sleep do teens need? And how much sleep are they realistically getting? Based on current data, most teens need about 9-plus hours to have the best or most suitable sleep night. 1

Many factors combine to decrease sleep in adolescents. We can think in general of two major factors: biological, the brain processes that regulate the amount and timing of sleep, and behavior, all the psychological, parental, societal, cultural features of teen’s life.

2These changes lay the ground work for the biological night to occur later during the teen years than before. Circadian Rhythms (daily biological clock) seems to slow down as young people progress through the middle school years. At the same time, the sleep pressure system appears to change in a way that makes it easier to stay awake longer, though without changing the amount of sleep that is needed.

Moreover, many teens have a "technological playground" in their bedrooms: television, computer with 24/7 Internet access, telephones, electronic game stations, MP3 players, and so forth. These technologies provide instant and constant contact with peers. Societal and media pressure to consume these technologies is now higher than ever. Yet society also requires that teens go to school at a time of day that is at odds with their biological and social lives. So we see teens turn to caffeine, late-night Internet and cramming in activity after activity as a means to keep awake. 3

Problems emerge for lack of sleep. 4For some, grades begin to suffer as they struggle to keep awake during class and while doing homework. And others may simply feel moody, never knowing how to feel or do their best. Worse still, many teens suffer from both physical and mental illness.

5The earlier teens can start this good sleep habit, the easier it will be for them to stay healthy, happy and smart.

    A. Sleep experts recommend teens keep consistent sleep and wake schedule.

    B. Teens may schedule sleep like any other daily activity and make sleep a priority.

    C. Then they are trapped into a terrible situation where they would never get enough sleep.

    D. The sleep-wake bio-regulatory factors appear to change significantly during adolescence.

    E. Some teenagers struggle to wake up in the morning, often resulting in late or missed school.

    F. Teens may be driven to things that can wake them up because they'll fall asleep if they do not.

    G. However, it is indicated that most teens fall short of this goal, many by a considerable amount.

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to visit other countries, modern cities and ancient towns. They travel to enjoy these special places, or just to relax. It is always interesting to discover new things and different ways of life, such as by meeting different people, trying different food, and listening to different music.

People who live in the country like to go to big cities. They like to spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at restaurants. People who live in the city usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe in the sun.

Most travellers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them. Then, perhaps years later, they can look at the photos and be reminded of the happy time they once had.

People often travel by train, by boat or by car. All means of travelling have their advantages and disadvantages and people choose one according to their plans and the places they are going.

If we travel a lot, we will see and discover a lot of things that we could never see or experience at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers. A. Because they like taking all kinds of pictures.

    B. Because they all take a camera with them while travelling.

    C. Because the pictures are beautiful to look at.

    D. Because the pictures can remind them of the happy time.

【4】What’s the best way to study geography?

  • 23、   I first began experiencing anxiety and depression at the age of 14, after being bullied (欺凌) at school for years. While at first anxiety and depression would come and go, it eventually became a constant part of my life.

I was so eager to find the solution to overcoming my anxiety and depression that I tried everything from when I was in college to graduate school: mood-changing medication, special teas, yoga, anything I read about in books, and advice given by doctors. Despite this, I still felt I hadn't even come close to managing the problem.

But one afternoon, my eyes fell upon an article in a magazine I was reading that talked about how dogs were able to help people with anxiety and depression. The very next day, I decided to get a dog — a corgi. When I brought my little corgi, Buddy, home, I didn't realize how much he would change my life. It didn't happen right away, however.

Once the “puppy excitement” went away, my anxiety and depression came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feelings again. I didn't want to get out of bed. I turned to pull the covers back over my head and gave up. That was when I saw Buddy.

Buddy started jumping all over me, licking my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It was as if he were saying, “There's no time to be sad; the world is amazing!”

And for the first time in my life, on a day when my anxiety and depression were strong, I got out of bed. I put on my winter clothes and went for a walk in the snow with my new friend. I realized at that moment, walking down the street in winter, my life was changing. I really was a new girl.

Sure, I still have days when I feel down or anxious. But with Buddy by my side, I've finally learned how to manage these feelings and emotions.

【1】According to the first two paragraphs, the author________.

A.has been a school bully for years

    B.suffered from depression since college

C.tried many ways to fight depression but nothing worked

D.felt less depressed after taking medication and doing yoga

【2】How did the author know having a dog might help with her depression?

A.She read it in an article by chance.

B.A doctor recommended it to her.

C.She heard it from some other depression sufferers.

D.She found out herself after spending some time with a corgi.

【3】How does the author feel in the last paragraph?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Confused.

    D.Doubtful.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Puppy excitement

    B.Keeping a dog benefits us a lot

    C.Getting rid of anxiety

    D.Defeating depression with Buddy

  • 24、Let’s be real: apologizing can be difficult. Nobody likes to admit that they were wrong, or that they offended somebody. However, you still have agreed-upon ways to acknowledge that you did something wrong and to express your remorse to others. When you have harmed someone, a genuine, well-given apology demonstrates that you care about them, allows you to take responsibility for your actions, rebuilds trust, and prevents the further deterioration of relationships. It can also help you avoid the shame and guilt of wronging someone from eating away at your self-esteem.

A proper apology should express your understanding that you've done something wrong. Telling somebody “I'm sorry you feel that way!” is not an adequate apology. You should also be aware of over apologizing; it can have negative effects, too. So try to make an effective apology when the situation calls for one.

As Professor Karen A. Cerulo from the University of New Jersey explained, an effective apology has several elements. Number one: don't wait. Forget your ego. Unless you're involved in a legal situation, where you're advised not to speak, you should make an apology right away. Second, don't apologize for what people thought. Instead of saying, “Tm sorry that you misunderstood me!” or “I'm sorry that you misinterpreted or misread my actions!”, apologize for what you did—not for what other people might have thought about it. Third, don't give context. The “why” of what you did is less important to people than your regret and remorse. Finally, there's really a successful formula that you need to use: identify your victim right up front, then express remorse, and, if possible, make restitution.

Dr. Ben Ho, an associate professor of economics at Vasser College, says that people often want to see an apology that costs something. This cost doesn't have to be financial; it can come in the form of admitting your incompetence in making the previous error or promising to do better in the future.

As for promises, avoid the ones that can't be kept. Don't say that you’ll ensure that this will not happen again if you not confident it won't. It could come back to bite you, Martin Stone of Public Relation agency Tank explains. And do remember that the use of "but” can hugely change the tone of an apology. As Stone points out, “I'm sorry but …” sounds like you are making excuses and aren't actually taking any form of responsibility.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To tell you not to harm others.

B.To persuade you to make apologies.

C.To remind you to reflect on your behaviors.

D.To advise you to improve relationships with others.

【2】What should a good apology be like?

    A.As formal as possible.

    B.As positive as possible.

    C.Neither serious nor forced.

    D.Neither inadequate nor excessive.

【3】On what condition does Cerulo advise people not to apologize quickly?

    A.When people misunderstand you.

B.When you are held legally responsible.

C.When you are forced to do something wrong.

D.When you don't know whom you have harmed.

【4】What does the underlined word refer to?

    A.A previous error.

    B.A weak apology.

    C.A false promise.

    D.A terrible excuse.

People are calling him “ _________”.

It took Hansen, from Nebraska, nearly a decade to _________ the giant pumpkin named “Berta” before he hollowed (挖空) it out and created a cooler inside that allowed it to float for a _________ journey. Officials in Bellevue, Nebraska, recorded Hansen’s journey inside “SS Berta.”

“Cinderfella” also earned widespread praise as people across the globe wished him “pumpkin speed.”

“Congratulations Duane for smashing the world record,” the city of Bellevue wrote in a Facebook post. “We are __________ that you started this record breaking 38 mile journey in Bellevue and it’s been fun to follow along. … Seems like a unique if not slightly __________ way to celebrate his 60th birthday.”

Hansen began his journey as family and friends watched from public boat docks. The biggest hurdle was waves from other boats __________ to tip over his pumpkin boat.

“I couldn’t even __________ to anyone because of the balancing act I had to do as water began to leak into the pumpkin…” he told the outlet.
