二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Writing can be a solitary life. I often sit at home for days, weeks and sometimes months working on book projects, articles and other assignments. Seriously, some days I want to chase the FedEx driver yelling, “Wait! I need to talk to you!”

And sometimes I don’t see the result of my work. On occasion, I’ll get a message online or even a letter that has been mailed to my publisher. Or I’ll run into someone who says, “I love what you write.” A dad once sent me a message to tell me he had heard me speak on the radio, and it had convinced him that he hadn’t been spending enough time with his children. And then he went on to tell me how that had changed his relationship with his family.

Those are the things that keep writers going and the moments that touch our hearts. But with my newest book, it has been different. Because of the television show, I’ve experienced something I’ve never met before.

I’ve gotten to see the faces of the people who are being affected by my works. My co-author, Brian Bird, and I asked purchasers of our books to post their pictures with the books when they received their copies or found them in stores. Dozens of pictures began popping up, with beautiful sweet faces. I was moved to tears. Visual proof showed that my work was touching lives.

Sweet friends, most of you probably aren’t writers. But you are given a specific task to accomplish. You’ve worked hard - sometimes for years - and maybe it seems like nothing is happening. Or you feel like what you’re doing isn’t of value. You’re wrong. You might not get to see the faces of those you’re reaching, but there is no doubt in my mind that whenever we’re faithful to do what we have to do, we are impacting the lives of others. So keep doing what you’re doing. I can promise you it’s worth it.

1What does the author think of writing according to Paragraph 1?

    A.Meaningless. B.Hard. C.Inspiring. D.Funny.

2What makes the author continue writing?

A.His faithful publisher. B.People’s purchase of his books.

C.His readers’ reaction to his works. D.His good relationship with his family.

3What can we infer about the author from the text?

A.He thinks all of our jobs are worthy to do. B.He seldom interacts with his readers.

C.He has shot many smiling purchasers. D.Brian Bird gave him much confidence in writing.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Write what you want B.Find the truth of life

C.Learn about reader’s needs D.Believe your work matters.

  • 22、Is a college education worth the price? This is a question more Americans are asking as college costs continue rising and the job market remains weak.

Attending a four-year college in the United States can cost more than $40,000 a year. Many people with a college education are drowning in student debt. They had to borrow money to finance their education.

A recent study suggests that a college education is worth it, at least in the United States. The study found that someone with a 4-year college education earns twice as much as a high school graduate over a lifetime. And for nearly all study programs, an individual with a four-year bachelor’s degree(学士学位) earns even more than someone with a two-year degree.

But not all college majors have a guarantee (保证) of good wages. For example, a chemical engineer can expect to earn double the earnings of a social worker over a lifetime. On average, a finance graduate makes more than a nurse or medical aide, while the nurse makes more than an elementary school teacher.Generally, college majors that require skill in mathematics have high lifetime earnings. Graduates in computer science, engineering, and physics have the highest wages. Majors that involve teaching children or counseling have the lowest pay. Actually, graduates with bachelor’s degrees in some fields earn even less than people with a 2-year associate’s degrees over a lifetime. They include early childhood education, elementary education, and social work.

The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution noted that future earnings should not be the only reason for choosing a college major. It says, “Personal enjoyment, engaging in meaningful work, and filling a social need should also enter into a student’s decision-making.” The numbers are only averages and there are many exceptions.

“College degrees may not be a guarantee of higher income, but they come closer than just about any other investment (投资) one can make.” said study organizers.

【1】What is the problem many American college students face?

    A.No personal enjoyment

    B.No job opportunities

    C.Rising education costs

    D.Lack of professional guidance

【2】Which major will an American college student probably choose in order to earn more money?

    A.Childhood education.

    B.Elementary education.

    C.Social work.

    D.Computer science.

【3】What is the study organizers’ attitude to college education from the last paragraph?

A.A college education is worth the price.

B.A college education is worthless at all.

C.A college education means high incomes.

D.A college education promises a happy life.

  • 24、Zero gravity looks cool. But what about the thing no one likes to talk about? Yes, that is right: going to bathroom. Zero gravity makes this everyday task quite a challenge. Astronauts have to be toilet-trained all over again.

The Apollo astronauts raised themselves off the seat of their chairs and stuck a clear plastic bag to their back sides with sticky strips. A second astronaut watched closely to be sure no waste matter escaped the seal. (You would not want that stuff floating around the cabin!) When the deed was done, the astronaut cleaned up with a piece of plastic attached to the inside of the bag, removed the bag, dropped a disinfectant pill in with the waste matter, and put the whole thing, sealed, into a special container.

Donald W. Rethke, an engineer for Hamilton Standard Space Systems, developed a more private way to answer nature’s call: the space toilet. It is somewhat like the kind of toilet one would find on commercial airplanes --- with unique adaptations for zero gravity, of course. For instance, it has thigh bars that keep the astronaut from floating off the seat.

The astronaut (male or female) defecates (排便) in a bag and urinates (排尿) in a hose(软管). Solid and liquid wastes are kept separated because at least 85% of the urine is recycled and, yes, after careful filtration(过滤), used for drinking and other purposes. (Water is always in demand in space.) A vacuum sucks the waste materials into the toilet, where the waste is compacted into hamburger-like patties for easy storage. Although not exactly like an earthbound visit to the toilet, it is at the very least much more private than in the early days of space travel.

【1】According to the first paragraph, the lack of the gravity can turn something as simple as _______ into a major challenge.

    A. eating       B. taking baths

    C. sleeping   D. going to the restroom

2How did astronauts use toilet systems in the Apollo days

    A. None of the waste was separated as it is now.

    B. Solid waste was compressed (压缩)and stored on board.

    C. The toilet units used water to remove the waste through the system.

    D. The astronauts each used their own private restroom.

3To ensure the user remains seated, the toilet comes equipped with _______

    A. a plastic bag B. a sticky strip

    C. a wide hose     D. a thigh bar

4What can be inferred from the fact that most of the astronauts’ urine is recycled?

    A.The recycled water tastes better.

    B. Water is limited on the space shuttle.

    C. It is very convenient to get their urine recycled.

    D. Space science includes recycling urine.
